Title: Anselm's fantasy lands: Halloween undead & wife with child
Post by: Anselm van Helsing on January 31, 2018, 10:41:11 AM
Hello,

This year I wanted some determination for my painting and joined the Wargamers challenge 2018 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=106242.0). The idea is to paint 365 figures, and paint more than you buy. For me personally, both felt really hard challenges, but this January progress might suggest that I can do it.

Lots of repainted figures, as I dug into my pile of long-forgotten GW undead.

Still some tricks to learn with photography. Not gonna toy too much with camera settings and photoediting. Better lighting and no flash is likely the fast & effective solution, just need that lighting. But here we go with what we have atm!

Repainted GW Dogs of War Marksmen of Miragliano

Necromancers

Repainted and rebased GW classic Neferata with her cat

Repainted and rebased GW Wraiths

Repainted GW Wolf and a Strigoi Vampire

Reaper Bones Cultists

Reaper Bones Halflings

LotR Trolls. I found it hard to paint large areas of skin. Calling it a day with these.

Some barrels, crates and pots

15mm animals, test figures for a new never-ending project

If we say that repainting without paint removal saves half of the work, I'll count the 17 repainted figures as eight. The challenge rating is that ogre-sized figures count as two, so the LotR Trolls bring the number to 14. Then we have ten roughly man-sized models, so 24. Then the scenery accessories which were quite easy to paint with shades and drybrushing, maybe worth three models. Brings the total count to 27. Just four short, which isn't too bad, since I've got more models prepared and primed.

Long ago, I bought a ready-built and plastered simple balsa & resin house group. Later, I added some detail on it, but really started to paint it last night. This will count towards next month's goal.

Very good progress! I'll be happy if I manage to paint one or two models a month on average.

That vampire is a strigoi  ;)

Updated the photos in the first post.

Slow progress with varying stuff.

More adventurous souls with a dog.

Citadel Pack Horse & Mule.

Critters.

And more terrain/accessories to place over the gaming table:

Barbarian Throne from Scotia-Grendel.

Really slow progress. Not gonna make the 365 figures per year, but enjoying every bit of painting. And I think I'm on track with painting more than I've bought over the past 3½ months. :)

There is some great work there.  Well done.
I know you said you struggled with the large areas of skin on the trolls, but I think they look great.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm reasonably happy with the trolls' skin. It just took a long time and many layers to get there. Learned something on the go, will learn more with next big models.  :)

Also my belated thanks to boneio. Fixed the beastly vampire into a Strigoi.

Love the recent additions. I'm a fan of the ral Partha trolls and those peasant conversions are a great idea

Damn, those necromancers have learned a thing or two about camouflage...

Always love seeing other people's world building, and it's a nice mix of stuff you've got going.

Super characterful! Like... every model tells a story. I don't know how you did it, but you have a wonderful painting style!

But why are the necromancers hiding in barrels and boxes? ;)

OK, took me a while to catch on. Now summoned to be seen.  ;)

Also many thanks for your compliments!  :)

Making the Heroquest mummy look awesome...

How DO you do it?

Thanks. It's a pretty detailed miniature actually, so washes and drybrushing work nicely.

The base is simply grey freehand on black undercoat, various washes, then choice points in light grey, and highlighting corners to almost white. Some marmoresque lines in lighter colour here and there. I practiced this with the two skellies further above.
