I've just finished the construction of a new bridge to span my forthcoming 'wide' river. I think it came out rather well for a design as you go affair. I usually have a pretty good idea of how a thing is going to look before I start construction but this build was very organic. I hope you like it too but, do you generally plan things out completely or generally make it up as you go?

More pics, etc. here (including a picture of the inspiration):

Looks good to me. You may not need the 'windowboxes' on this example though!

I like that a lot :)
I'm assuming the roof comes off?
Regarding your question, it depends on what I'm making. The vast majority of stuff is in my head before I start and I very rarely jot any designs down although I'm finding I plan out layouts etc more and more using cad. If I'm on a specific brief then I'll sketch it out for the client to see.

Excellent! I love it :-* :-*

Though I don't normally do removable roofs (perhaps that should be rooves for H&M roofs), in this case the roof does come off for practicality - here's the link to more pics, and a pic with the roof off.

That's lovely James. For your Italian Wars collection? Hope we can fit in another game soon. Cheers. Steve

I've been unable to do much for while, and when I have not for long, because I'm recovering from a sprained right wrist. However, with a bit of left handed dry brushing, I have managed to finish this bridge. I suppose the question is, does it look like it's been done by someone else?

Vauban? No seriously, a lovely bridge .

looks fantastic

I think it is wonderful. :-*
I want to build one too

That is a work of art. Excellent job.

Good looking piece of terrain! Not shabby for working left handed!
The river is just painted MDF or do you have a special trick? Looks simple yet effective.
-
Thanks.
The river is just painted MDF with foam board banks. I've taken some pics of these sections in production. At some point I'll do a step by step blog post with paint colour notes, etc. - 'doing simple river sections on the cheap' - or something like that. In fact, the colour in the pic is a much brighter blue than the river looks in reality, it's much darker to the eye.
I've seen rivers done much better but I wanted nearly 20' of river sections with 180mm 'width of water', and I had neither the spare time (or money) to do that amount using the methods that give a better, more realistic, effect.

Wow..incredible..

Cracking finish :)

Thank you for the quick explanation. Looking forward to that how to.

That is sensational. I have always wanted one of those 'Sleepy Hollow' covered bridges, but talent has always lagged my imagination. Super work James.
