Post by: tim in saskatoon on 23 February 2018, 03:57:37 AM
This past weekend I FINALLY got in another game of The Pikeman's Lament with my good friend Paul. As the direct descendant of a long line of football hooligans Paul took the English and as the descendant of dour Scots/Irish immigrants I played the Scots...

Nicely painted minis-(are they Old Glory?) and an interesting battle. Unfortunate about the Scots horse, if both units had gone over together at the start rather than being committed piecemeal? (hindsight is a wonderful thing lol)  It was rather brave of the Scots pike to advance across the river without muskets in support, with a predictable result. I know from my own games you need at least 1:1 ratio shot to pike and preferably 2:1.

Most of the English are Old Glory. The Scots are mostly from The Assault Group, with a few from Dixon, Perry, and Renegade.

Oh yes, it would have turned out entirely different if both cavalry units had committed together, but I'm all about NARRATIVE. I don't really play games to win them, I play to watch a story unfold. I rolled and "ineffectual leader", so I parked him on the top of the hill thinking he'd be the sort to just sit where he had a good view of things and watch "his" men do the fighting and not actually expose himself to any danger - unless absolutely necessary.

The Pike I sent across the river because they'd lost their supporting shot and without them the English had no incentive to come across the river, they could just sit there and blast the Scots apart with their own shot at their leisure. I figured the ONLY chance they had, slim though it was, was to cross the river and take the fight to the enemy!
