Title: "Oldhammer" Empire , Thyrus Gormann, Supreme Patriarch. 23.02.22
Post by: chema1986 on 19 June 2018, 04:44:11 PM
Hello mates,

This time some old school painting... Yes, the box of Warhammer Empire,  Altdorf  halberdiers came to me. Over the past few years, I have been collecting most Empire miniatures of 4th and 5th editions all over the internet, and started a childhood project, painting a high standard Empire army. In a future post, I will showcase it here, but today, I will post some pics of my "w.i.p." halberdier regiment. I have 20 miniatures with the metal command, but have painted only 10 for now. They show their age, but are nice miniatures, with that old flavour GW had in its "Golden Age".

I painted them with GW paints, Vallejo and Foundry triads. The decals, although old, fit perfectly and add a nice touch to the unit.  The banner is printed, I am horrible at free hand banners I'm afraid.

I hope you like the minis, I  personally like them a lot, and I'm quite pleased with the result.

You've managed to make a block of monopose 90's Citadel plastics look good - very well done! Looking back I think it works ok in WHFB provided metal command models are used and the finish is quality. It certainly helps that awkward ranking is avoided.

Hi there!
I bring here some updates from my Empire army, I have been busy painting some fantasy stuff, and I managed to finish half regiment of Reiksguard foot knights, the other half is just primed in black, including command. I also painted a Grey Wizard from Warhammer Quest, who will be used as my battle wizard in my Empire force. Apart from that, nowadays I am building the Empire War Wagon, but its crew is in bare metal yet... so no War Wagon pics for now.

I want to include a veeeeery old Steam Tank here.  In this blog there are pics of my other Steam Tank, the "Conqueror" in metal, from year 2001 I think...  Well, this one is the oldest of all Steam Tanks ever produced by Games Workshop. I painted it with Airbrush, oils and different acrylics by brush (Citadel, Vallejo...)

Hi again!
It has been 5 years since  I bought this miniature on eBay... 2013, and now I have decided to paint  here  the imperial war wagon. One of my favorite miniatures of all times, sculpted by the Perry twins in the early 90s. A heavy piece of metal full of details, I run away from it until this November, and  finished it yesterday.

I painted in GW paints, Vallejo and Foundry. In order to paint the horses and the structure of the chariot, I used an airbrush, to modulate the red and yellow highlights.

Painting the engineers was time consuming, because of the "landsknecht" uniform, with so many  bright colours, as well as the wood grain of the black wood structure.

I used old GW Bretonnian decals on the horse barding, and the flags are printed from the internet, but are the same included in the original box set.

Hi guys!

I have just updated my blog with an impressive miniature from 1990,  Marauder Miniatures Giant (Part of Citadel) I am quite please with the end result after a month painting him..

You have more info and "tutorial" here:

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/06/marauders-giant-warhammer-monster.html

I bought it second hand in April, and I could not resist painting him soon afterwards, in order to be the center piece of my Orcs & Goblins army, or the main antagonist of a Warhammer Quest adventure!

I hope you like it!

Nicely done It's a heck of model to paint .You were braver than me I chickened out of a multi coloured tunic and went for a leather tunic. So hats off to you.
It's quite a chunk of metal like James I got a base coat on the flesh and realised it was a lot bigger of a paint job than I'd given it credit for.
So I can definitely appreciate the effort it took to finish.(and so nicely too. )

Superb thread.  Classic minis painted in a nicely classic style.  I say that as someone who never particularly liked that giant.  It does show how timeless the basic original Warhammer Fantasy minis were though.  It also explains why there are so many random Kickstarters going back to some sculpts of that style.

Love everything in this thread.  Keep it up!

Well done. You've made some meh plastics look very nice.

Fully agree! They look awesome.

As do the rest of the minis. That Black Orc is superb.

The War Wagon is amazing, and the Giant too!

Hi guys!
I have just updated my blog with some heroes of Warhammer Quest:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/10/warhammer-quest-witch-hunter-heroes.html

After painting the Warhammer Giant, just before the summer, my mood turned into a more "historical"manner. This changed last weekend, I had a miniature laying around during months, and I really wanted to paint it but never find the right moment, until now ;)   Warhammer Quest Witch Hunter, a fantasy XVIIc. style miniature, with a lot of detail and crisp details. It has been a joy to paint, and I'm pleased with the final result.  I used mostly Foundry paint triads, Vallejo model color, some Citadel paints ( I tend to use lesser and lesser Citadel paints, due to their tendency  to dry in the pot...) then I applied matt varnish from Ammo Mig.

I found out a couple of Heroes painted last year but not yet photographed and uploaded here, so sorry for this, here they come, my Dwarf hero and Barbarian!

The Dwarf iron breaker is from Warhammer Quest core set (1995!) in plastic, a nice little miniature that painted up quite nicely.

And regarding the Barbarian, I simply did not like at all the Barbarian included in the core game... I may paint it in the future, but for gaming purposes, I painted a different Barbarian, a guy from the mountains of Norsca, similar to the Barbarian featured in Warhammer Quest pc game (or IOS game), with more agressive and mature look. I tried to paint some TMM (true metallic metal) In the sword, but, as you can see, I am very far from master that technique haha, I am not very used to paint with those fancy styles, but sometimes I like to try "new" things. I hope you like it!

Great work on that witch hunter!

Unfortunately I do not own that model, but I have lately been painting a few other Warhammer Quest models that I have in my collection. Earlier this year I finished the Imperial noble, and currently I have the pit fighter on my painting desk (just needing a few finishing touches and a layer of varnish). I think I have also the Bretonnian knight hiding somewhere with a coat of primer...

Hello fellow painters, I have updated my blog with a new unit for my empire army:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/11/warhammer-empire-pistoliers.html

I have managed to finish another full unit, the famous Empire pistoliers,  that fast cavalry in the renaissance German "reiter" style. In Spain, Games Workshop brand them as "Herreruelos" a type of soldier of XVI c. very similar to these Fantasy style "reiter".  I love the sculpts by the Perry brothers, with a lot of historical feel and available a lot of years in the Warhammer catalog, until their plastic substitutes came out.

The plastic horses are not bad, but horses are (for me) tedious to paint, with a ton of thin layers in the horse flesh in order to achieve a smooth finish... I am a lazy horse painter!

the riders were easy to paint, mostly blackened armour highlighted in grey, with edge highlight in silver, the red trousers and white and blue feathers give some colour to this unit.

There are some small conversions here and there, for instance, the flag bearer is a common pistolier with a hand swap, he lost his pistol and had instead a plastic knight hand with a lance, and the flag is an original 90' White Dwarf pistolier flag!! with the colours of Middenheim.   The "leader" has a plastic head from the 6th edition foot soldier command sprue.

This reminds me that I have a bunch of the same figures waiting to make it to painting queue - though at the moment I am more in the mood for painting infantry than cavalry.

I do not have a standard bearer in my lot, but one of the models I bought second-hand came with a left arm missing, so I replaced that with a metal arm bearing a horn to make him into a musician. Plus I have also somewhere a metal outrider with a repeater pistol to use for a leader.

Hello mates,

I have just updated my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2020/05/warhammer-foot-reiksguard-finished.html

With a unit of ten Reiksguard knights on foot,  I had laying around some of them unpainted and more than half the unit painted, so these days of quarantine are perfect to paint unfinished units like these.

I tried to reproduce almost exactly the colour scheme of the White Dwarf magazine and Empire Army book from the nineties :)

I hope you like them

Hello guys!

A lot of time since I last updated this thread !   So now, after painting so many historical minis, I have just updated my blog with a miniature for my Empire army of Warhammer Fantasy;

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/01/warhammer-empire-mounted-herald-with.html

the Imperial Herald with Battle Standard. This figure was released in 1992 for Warhammer Empire army, sculpted by Alan Perry.

I was lucky enough to buy the box of "Heroes of the Empire" 3 years ago, at a good price, but I had painted none of the miniatures until now.

In Christmas I am usually in a "Warhammer" mood, perhaps because, when I was a child, these kind of miniatures were a common Christmas present at home :)  So I grabbed this mounted Herald and started painting him!

I used an airbrush in order to speed up the process of painting the barding of the horse. I also used waterslide decals by Greenstuff World, I highly recommend them, great quality and you get a lot of decals per sheet.  I chose the more " Empire" like designs and applied to the barding of the horse, and also to the rider when it was painted. Of course I first applied a coat of gloss varnish prior to putting the decals into place.

This kind of miniature is a joy to paint: lots of character (It's a Perry!) and a huge amount of details everywhere, so also was time consuming to get it finished.

By the way, the flag was imposible to me to find it on the internet or books/magazines, so I just took a picture with my phone of the miniature in the Army Book of the Empire, and then print it in the appropriate size and Voilà! I had the (literally) original flag on my own version of the Herald with Battle Standard.

I hope you like it!

Hi guys!

Another update on this thread, now is the turn of Thyrus Gormann, the Supreme Patriarch of the Colleges of Magic...
you can see him too here :

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/02/warhammer-empire-supreme-patriarch-of.html

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgmCDqAMH-nr5T5FB-k8_wZmSLyDp8T8-n2g23u-i8RJcVQokBvZCt6PY5PBodAeXl2aLLpWAO1Z18sX5-LrUy0GP4SYPKFpv3QDhH6wCil7KEg5IdSnxwu7ZSAwbrjgE-JvQQUitmCbZ5oNvcIi18vhgL_m3W4egzNr85YyDDStXc0jebT5YWS6_4uHw=s4032)

My Empire army had only 1 wizard (borrowed from my Warhammer Quest) so I needed a more powerful wizard to counter my friend's Vampire Counts forces, and Thyrus Gormann was a good solution, armed with the bright sword and the the Staff of Volans. So now my army is quite strong in magic power!

I painted him in over 10 days, painting just a few minutes (to half an hour) in every session. The horse was painted with an airbrush, in yellow tones, and then with a little bit of oils as highlights, the horse flesh in Foundry triads (conker brown).

The rider was painted mostly with Vallejo and Foundry paints, following the bright scheme of the Oldhammer and Middlehammer period, in reds and yellows. I tested my skills with an attempt of painting TMM "True Metallic Metal" on the sword, as I usually paint historical miniatures in a quicker way.

I hope you like it!

lovely work - great to see your style, which I've admired so much on historicals, on these GW figures.

I'm coming to the conclusion that they're about my favourite sculpts (what I think of as 6th-7th edition?) in the hobby overall.

A lovely addition. I do like the continuity your achieving as you progress. ( although I've never been an advocate of the green edge basing your choice of ground colour compliments it well.)
