Title: Various European builds - Windmill - Page 40
Post by: OSHIROmodels on 16 July 2018, 11:09:15 PM
I’ve got quite a few of the German/Austrian commissions on the go (in various scales) so I’ll post them all here as and when they get completed (I think there’s 12 to do at the moment).

First off are two unbased builds with another six or so to make afterwards. The client will be basing them himself so they match the rest of his terrain. 28mm Austrian for scale.

Got a 15mm one on the go. Basically a smaller version of this one here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=108923.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=108923.0)

Slightly reduced detailed given the size but the basics are there. Should be done Wednesday (heat depending).

Interesting that there are no chimneys - is that your choice, the customer's, or just the style of the actual buildings from that area?

Splendid work, btw!

Observant nobility there, Baron.  I suspect most of us were so enthralled with the fine craftsmanship that we missed that detail.  Doubly wondering since the first images in the thread do have chimneys.  Good spotting.

Clients choice but I’ve seen plenty of German house that seem to have none at all.

The Low German House style of building often had an 'uhlenloch' opening instead of a chimney as they had an internal open fire pit type arrangement.

Actually, as a wargaming choice it makes a lot of practical sense to forsake the chimneys, especially if one plays with clumsy folks who are likely to catch them with cuffs or tape measures. I’ve had chimney pots broken off in storage ...... the horror!

Finished off some 10mm builds for a regular client. He’s got three similar ones already and I’m working on a bigger one (but it went a bit wrong so I’m starting again). £1 for scale and the bases are 120mm square.

Largish update with plenty of wips  :) All 28mm with a Victrix Austrian for scale.

First off is a wip of a one foot square building base. This is one of three and I think the others will be less enclosed. Still a fair bit to go.

Second are a couple of builds that are only being primed for the client. They’ll have small bases added to them as well as a few final details (like a roof on the barn  lol).

Third are some finished sheds to go with the unbased individual builds earlier.

And finally the rear building of repeat of the second Aspern/Essling building base I completed previously.

Lovely builds in this thread, really fairy tale in their detail.

Just one suggestion - that last build (last photo), below the chimney - maybe another 1 1/2 tiles needed?

Next up is a large model of the church at Aspern. Some conjecture work had to be done, mainly for the front as there wasn’t a lot of info available. There will be three tops; normal tiled (how it’s supposed to be), ruined tiled and an onion dome similar to the last one. There’s also a compound that is separate but its in the garage drying.

Thanks again  :)

Are these a commission?
How many more to do?

They’re all for different commissions. I thought it best to keep them all in one place instead of spamming  :)

I must admit it’s not quite how I envisioned Colorado to be but I accept that artistic licence plays its part and has given us a much prettier version.

Got a fairly large one on the go at the moment. A rough representation of Plancenoit. It's not exact but will give a feel for it.

First building done below.

Been ill most of the week and it’s not shifting yet but I forgot to post these earlier. Had a little bridge commission to do and also extra tower tops for the Aspern church.

First, the original spire.

Just finished off another little building base to go with the walled compound earlier. One more of these to do for the same client but it’ll have a church and a small graveyard.

This is the third base of this particular commission and the church is a smaller version of the one I did before that didn't have a base.

A stunning farm and not an easy to build. The slate on the roofs is great and must have taken a lot of your time I love the many wonderful details and the ground. The whole thing looks also solid and sturdy... very good job.

Although...

Yes but remind your wife that:

a) If you post it on the internetz it will be there forever
b) That’s not quite the sort of video the makers of the GoPro had in mind.

 ;)

Nice vid by the way!

Not quite sure if you're trying to be funny or not.

Like the Japanese stuff? Personally mdf is ok as a base for some stuff and for Old West, but I much prefer resin for most types of building.

Yeah, my sales dropped right off when the mdf stuff started coming out (most of it isn't that historically accurate either which is even more annoying lol)

Thank you. I could look at doing some smaller buildings at some point I suppose but I don't want to invest that much time into it.

Finished one of the big ones I've been working on, Plancenoit. It's about 400mm x 800mm and is mounted on 6mm mdf for stability. These are only some quick photos as I need to try and get a decent set up sorted as it's bigger than what I normally use  lol

I've got the Grande Armie coming later this week so when they are here I'll do some proper photos  :)

The first thing I want to say is that this is excellent work - far better than anything I could do.

The one thing you haven't quite caught, and I appreciate this is difficult (if not impossible) to do in a 'stand alone' model that isn't fitting into a larger contoured board, is the 'sunken' nature of the roads within the centre of Plancenoit.  When I visited the village in 2014, the first thing that struck me was "Wow!  This looks nothing like any depiction I've ever seen on a wargames table!"  However, yours is as close to the real thing as I have seen in wargaming terms.

The church (which is not the one that's currently standing there - so well done for not copying it) and the north-eastern half of the village is on a hill, whilst the south-western half is around the edge of a bowl that runs to the foot of the church entrance and forms a central 'square'.  As you walk around the northern and eastern sections particularly, but all the roads in and out of the southern and western sections too, the first thing that strikes you is that the boundary walls of many of the properties go up to head height (I'm 6'5"), with the ground floor levels of the buildings a few feet above that, in some cases.  Storming the village from east to west and north to south must have been an absolute nightmare, and difficult to imagine being performed without ladders!

Anyway, well done - looking forward to seeing more of your work.

To the Baron. Yes, you’re correct but it mentions in the blog post that it’s not supposed to be wholly Plancenoit as the intention is to use it for battles/games other than that one. The client wanted something a bit generic but identifiable.

Sunken roads would’ve been possible though along with the hill but impractical for the client  :)

Away at the moment but still doing bits here and there. Some 15mm German builds. Sprayed white as it was the only decent primer available.

One or two details to finish off and there’s a third house but I’m still working on the roof.

Got some more builds on the go for (name drop time) Alan Perry. Some German Saxon farm buildings. Seven in total but I won't be able to do the bigger ones as I probably won't be able to bring them back  lol

The last one will be painted at home as I can't find a decent enough spray here. It's not that there won't be one, it's just it would take to long to find it.

I don’t often get time to do wip photos (or I forget) but I’m quite pleased with how this is turning out. It’s a semaphore mast (main structure to follow shortly) and will be static and removable from the tower. It’s a Mix of lasered elements, styrene rod/strip and brass rod.

It is loosely based on a French Revolutionary War era signal station.
I gave Oshiro some pictures from the web and there is also a rarherhelpful video on the BBC website of a restored French station of the period that still operates. This will make a useful objective for some coastal games.

I generally just cut out a round shape a bit bigger than what it should be then hack at it with a long knife becoming more careful as I progress. It gets a coat of textured paint then gets painted as normal  :)

This has been done for a while but I've only just gotten round to taking decent pictures of it (it's not being delivered until we're fully out of lockdown).

Second time it's been done as well but this one is slightly different as the client wanted a perpendicular crossroads for it instead of an angled one.

As ever, lovely work Jim!

Might as well ask a master craftsman and architectural guru while I am at it. When did gutters become a thing with houses? I know they go back at least as far as antiquity and wood and lead versions were around since Roman days but did they only become a thing in vernacular architecture when the cast iron ones presumably made them cheap enough to mass produce?

I did, yes and both ways have pros and cons. For the moment this way works the best for the style of build I've got but it could change in the future. It would be good for proper pantiles but there's quite a bit of work in that to get it right.

Thanks again  :)

Got another couple done and out the way. The first is basically a copy of my 'Frogs and Lobsters' barn and the second is a copy from a previous commission but on it's own rather than with others.

I love that some of the walls around the yard are slightly off square. To me, it makes the piece unique and adds to the authenticity. I expect rural builders of the time worried mainly about structural soundness and components of the farm might have been built at different times, so parts wouldn’t always line up perfectly. It is beautiful work!

Friend of mine lives in a house almost exactly like the last one pictured. :o
Only the roof looked slightly more dodgy before he had it remodelled – warped beams seem quite a common issue with old houses in rainy Germany…

In essence, very well done. I for one would be a very happy customer. :-*

Styrene sheet cut to shape sometimes with the balsa at the same time then just painted as normal.

But I'm not sure about the placement of the chimney. At least in Bavaria (very close related to Austria), the chimney is placed inside the building to heat all rooms around the chimey and not on the front side of the building.

If you have picture than is seem ok!

The problem is that building styles changes very often in Germany and Austria. In an area of 100 Square Kilometers in south-east Bavaria I know at least 5 different styles of placing the farm buildings at farms, build in the late 19. and early 20. century.

Sometimes you can even pin down the area of a building by the style the roof is done, tile roof, slate roof, wooden shingle etc.

This one is part of a larger collection of several buildings (terraces, factory, church) that are currently on going. They are going to be used for later 19th and early 20th century (no posters have been added to define it to a particular time period).

28mm for the win and it's about 400mm long. There is the possibility of adding rear gardens in the future which would be good to do.

Lovely builds! They could even be used for earlier periods, too, with a little bit of good will. I agree that they would look even better and offer more in terms of gaming with rear gardens added. Looking forward to seeing more of that series.

You can use it even Early 21th century if you add some modern bits. I go once a week to my Metzger, but I never came across a "Wurstler"  lol

I think in the north it is more "Fleischer" than "Metzger". But I had to search if "Wurstler" really exist and it exist. Now I can surprise the people and ask for the "wurstler".

This one makes perfect sense. Its a cigare shop, and it was written sometimes with C instead of Z in the last century, and the owner is a mister Bock. Thats makes "Cigaretten Bock". Its very common in Germany to name the shop after the product you sell and the name of the owner even today, e.g. "Buchhandlung Huber", "Metzgerei Maier", "Backerei Sedlmaier", "Schlosserei Hintermeier"

Finished off a Franco Prussian War chateau and I'm quite pleased with how it came out  :)

The doors for the garden open and it could also be used for WWI and WWII. The house is separate the the garden if the game calls for it.

Love it James, a really lovely job on that piece, excellent for most post 17th century games.

A few points about French houses, the building you have built is more like a maison du maître, they normally have three but up to 4 windows with either a entrance onto the street or via the courtyard . A Maison Particulière has a minimum of 5 and up to 8 windows across the front and is within a town(17-19th C), with the only entry within in the courtyard, not into the street. A chateau has a minimum of 5 windows and no maximum and is normally in the country side bit can be built around.

Cheers

I had our 4 storey Maison particular 3D printed to 1/72 scale it is 36cm long and 29cm high, impractical for wargaming  if I add it with all of our surrounding Maison Particulars and the 17th century chateau opposite our house.

‘Look mate, I just build wots in the plans’. You ain’t asked for it, you ain’t paid for it’.

 :D :D :D

Very nice looking build. The punter can just tell himself it’s a security measure.

Thanks  :)

Just a couple of fairly generic German/Austrian builds that are variations on a theme this time. I really do need to paint some more Austrian figures though... I've got a couple of boxes worth  lol

Love your new builds, especially the first one. The second one would fit particularly well in northern Germany and the Low Countries but works in the south as well.
