Title: Furry conversions for Frostgrave and Badgers & Burrows et al.
Post by: Chris Abbey on 29 August 2018, 04:21:24 PM
Last weekend I had a stack of spare heads and tail left over from assembling miniatures for Albedo Miniatures Game and nothing to do with them until some more production casts arrived so I got thinking about the conversion potential.

The Albedo Miniatures come with a separate sprue containing a head and tail for the particular creature. The heads have a nice nick and a little cast on pin at the end, making them ideal for converting other miniatures. I decided to make a start with some fantasy miniatures to put a party together that could be used for an anthropomorphic themed game of D&D or Frostgrave.

Here's the first one. He's been made from a Frostgrave soldier body and arms and an Albedo Miniatures bare headed fox head and tail.

Well now I'm just going to have to ask - any chance said heads & tails could be available separately for just such conversion purposes?

I was just thinking the same thing.

Yes, the sprues which contain the head and tail are going to be made available separately so that they can be used for conversions. At the moment we have bare headed cat, dog, fox and two types of rabbit, however during the kickstarter we hope to increase the range dramatically. We would like to eventually have every mammal head available either to use for Albedo EDF / ConFed troopers of for use in conversions. I have a lot more fantasy miniatures I've converted so will get camera out this evening and get some more photos posted.

Here are a couple more conversions that I have done, this time with the Albedo Dog, bare headed sprue.

The Cannine Archer is based on a plastic Frostgrave body from there Soldiers box set.

The second miniature uses parts from a Victrix British Napoleonic set.

Interested to know what people think about buying / choosing heads and tails set from the new Albedo Miniatures. Just trying to decide how to list them on the website!

We are just working out how we are going to offer our heads and tails set for sale. These will be useful for doing conversions. They will cost £4 for 5 heads and 5 tails. Is it better to be able to select by headgear (i.e. berets, caps, helmets, bare headed etc). by species (i.e rabbit, cat, dog, fox etc), or should we list each head type individually (i.e. Cat - bare headed, Cat - helmet, fox - bare headed etc)?

That's a tricky one. I can see people wanting all helmet heads, all berets, etc but also wanting them by species for an all dog unit, etc.

Are there variations amongst the dog in helmet heads or cat in helmet heads, for example? I'd so I'd be tempted to go with dog-helmets, dog-berets, etc.

The second miniature uses parts from a Victrix British Napoleonic set.

This is kind of reminding me of an old cartoon whose name I can't quite recall... it was basically The Three Musketeers but with dogs instead.

But regarding the offering of the heads I agree with Elk101 - a tricky question though I'd also vouch for the solution offered.

Here we have a feline adventurer heading into the depths of a dungeon.
Frostgrave plastic soldier body and arms with Sally 4th Albedo cat head and tail sprue from ACP164 range.

Here's a Rabbit Armed Crossbow Critter that I made recently.
It uses a Frostgrave body and Albedo Miniatures Head & Tail.
We have just added these conversion sets to Sally 4th website.

The separate head packs that we have made available for converters has proved to be very popular, so we have decided to start developing more packs. We are always interested in what you are looking for from the range, so we are going to take suggestions over the next couple of days and then on Wednesday we will put a poll together so you can choose which suggested head pack we do next.

We are thinking of doing another species type (Badger, Wolf, Otter etc) and a fantasy / medieval helmet option.

Let us know what you'd like!

I think Wolf, badger and otter Heads would be great. Maybe hooded and with Cape.
Maybe wildboars and moose like Heads. Elefant heads would be interesting, too.

Glad to hear this.
Will be waiting for the poll and more than happy to hear that a fantasy helmet's being considered if only because I need a ton of sallet-helmed foxes...

This thingamajig came to mind:

Thank you for your suggestions for the next head pack to make available. I have collected together the responses that will fit on our 'standard frame' miniatures. We are hoping to do small frame creatures (rats, mice, squirrels etc) and large frame creatures like bears as stretch goals in kick starter, which starts 15th October.

We are now running poll, and will collect results on Monday 8th and pass them on to our sculpting team. This is link to vote

Following the huge interest in conversion kits for anthropomorphic critters, we got our sculptor to add the Otter to our range, and we also got him to add a conical medieval / dark age helmet to all of our existing heads.

We're very excited about the Albedo Combat Patrol Kick starter. This funded in the first 13 hours, has released a stack of stretch goals and has 10 days left to run. If you've not seen it yet, you can take a look @ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/179272384/albedo-combat-patrol-the-28mm-sci-fi-miniatures-ga (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/179272384/albedo-combat-patrol-the-28mm-sci-fi-miniatures-ga)

We have taken a slightly unusual step of releasing the basic troop types for retail sale at the same time as launching the Kick Starter so that gamers can get playing straight away with the free PDF rules packs. We have also released our existing heads packs so that converters can start using these straight away to. These are all available from www.acp164.com (http://www.acp164.com)

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/45421952_351233455450265_4161070655460081664_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=d4fdc8c20eb30e2ff9ad50a1fd1d026b&oe=5C897112)

We are committed to supporting Albedo with monthly new releases, which start this month. We'd like to get all our fans involved in the development of the range, so last month we asked everyone what they would like to suggest for the next head type. We collected the responses and held an online Poll and the otter head came out as the clear favorite. These heads have gone off for mold making and will be shipping out very soon. We are planning to do the same thing for Decembers new releases, so please add some comments with the next species or breed you would like us to feature, i.e Badger, Border Collie etc. and the next type of headgear you would like us to feature, i.e. Kepi, Samurai Helmet, Knights Helmet etc.

Tomorrow lunchtime, I'll collect the responses and put an online poll together and start the process for the December new release.

On Monday, Ann & I finally got round to starting our Burrows & Badgers campaign.

(https://scontent.flhr2-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50755890_2283437388368140_3054045914407632896_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent.flhr2-2.fna&oh=27da03ee0d61c2a6f0128fe131493c4e&oe=5CFC57BA)

This was our very first try out of the rules, but the campaign aspect of the game looked so great that we wanted to get stuck into it straight away. As it was our first game, we decided to try to keep it simple, so we played the 'Open Battle' scenario.

(https://scontent.flhr2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50834259_2283437538368125_8561770584474648576_n.jpg?_nc_cat=106&_nc_ht=scontent.flhr2-1.fna&oh=90061e301347a55fdb12bf1540323a0d&oe=5CC6CF84)

The game was a huge lot of fun.

Hi Chairface, I would definitely recommend it. Our starter Warbands only had 5 characters in each, so 10 in total, and less than a dozen miniatures does not qualify as a new project in my book!

Last week I got my paint brush busy on some new conversions to use in the Burrows & Badgers campaign that Ann and I are playing. We've only had one game so far, but it was a lot of fun and I ended up capturing one of Rufus' Roughcoats, a 'not so cunning Fox called Centus.

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/52011398_2699625026719830_9198807585585627136_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_eui2=AeFR_gv5Xq9zQa8GfdaMryVqFYAgeMCLmF4fqQt9SZuRNd_XZ6mxJNhP5uPOcPpiffqUJsj6WNLscODqMBrOJuy8pIHErcfYj7e_zqCg7DevYA&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=dd60b7c950e4c06eb523ee5b4bcb5172&oe=5CB6A305)

I'm figuring that with the loot from the battle plus the ransom money, I might be able to recruit another critter to my warband. With this batch of painting and converting I wanted to include some good cheap troops together with a couple of weapons that I have not got represented in my collection yet, such at the Caliver and the crossbow.

During the between game 'Wanderings' one of my Critters wandered into the Slave Market and liberated a 'small creature' to join my league. As I have been enjoying reading Redwall Abbey recently, I decided to choose a mouse.

This was good timing as a couple of days ago I received the 'proofs' from the pre-production molds for mice and rat heads. Last night I sorted out some conversions using Copplestone Castings halflings and these Albedo Critter Conversion Kits.

Last weekend, Ann & I finally managed to schedule in some time to play the second game in our Burrows and Badgers campaign. In our first game Ann's Warnand 'Ruffus' Roughcoats' had come of slightly worse than my 'Long March Patrol' as one of her Characters, Centus had managed to get himself captured and she did not have the funds to pay the ransom. I had my own problems following the first game as both of my archers had picked up arm injuries meaning the could no longer use a bow. I did however manage to pick up a new recruit at the Slave market, a likely looking young Shrew called Joseph.

Yes, we will certainly be doing more character heads and some of those will be female. The majority of our heads are 'gender neutral', they become female if you put them on a female body. It's very difficult to tell the sex of a rabbit by looking it in the eye, (unless you are another rabbit, perhaps). In Albedo & other comics major characters are differentiated by giving them hair to make them stand out, but 99.9999% of the Albedo females do not have hair cuts.

Over the last few months I have been working on a pair of armies for fantasy tabletop gaming with Saga Age of Magic, Thud & Blunder and Frostgrave themed around the Redwall Abbey series of fantasy books.

In the world of Redwall the forces of Evil are often a verminous hoard of rats with the occasional ferret or stout for variety and the forces of good are the Redwall Abbey mice together with woodland allies, often in the form of military hares from the 'Long Patrol'.

In my last hobby blog, we had taken a look at the start of my Redwall Mice so this time we are looking at the Rats of Gabool the Wild, notorious king of all sea rats. All of the miniatures (apart from the rat swarms that are 3D printed), are conversions of platic or metal 28mm miniatures using Albedo Critter Conversion kits

I do like to have variety in the miniatures that I use both for Role Playing Games and Tabletop Skirmishes.

I particularly like to be able to set the scene with groups of villagers, who are not heavily armed or in aggressive poses going about their village. This sort of figure is always a bit difficult to track down for historical or mainstream fantasy so doubly so for anthropomorphic villagers. I was very excited when I first heard about the 'Folk Rabble' set that Fireforge Games were planning as it sounded like they would be an ideal base for conversions for both lightly armed militia as well as village folk going about their daily business.

I've added an article about the conversions to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Blog/Woodland-Villager-Conversions (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Blog/Woodland-Villager-Conversions) Which I will update as I get them painted.

At the weekend I did a few more conversions for my Woodland Critters collection for Burrows & Badgers, Frostgrave and Saga forces.

This little fella started of as a Wargames Atlantic Halfling Militia and has been converted into a Hedgehog Warrior using a Critter Conversion Kit. http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Critter-Conversion-Kits (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Critter-Conversion-Kits)

The Wargames Atlantic Halflings and the Northstar Oathmark Dwarves are both excellent sources of bodies and arms for converting into small frame anthropomorphic characters like mice, shrews. hedgehogs and moles!

This weekend I put together a couple of conversions using Pulp Figures cowboys from the PMX range and the new Critter Conversion Kits of Dogs and Hares in Stetsons.
