Hi there,
My prussians are getting into shape... but I can't figure out whether I want brown or red for their cloth?
Tell me what you think and why
-
Brown, the red one looks like it's a rubber ring.
Grey is another common option for blanket rolls, if you're not a fan of the brown one. Or a more beige kind of brown.
-
I think grey would go well with the white. I would never have thought of this colour scheme - thats why I did mine in traditional FPW uniforms. Are you going to do the facings in a contrasting colour? That would effect my choice.

Perhaps. I don't care much for historical FPW uniforms.. if they're put up against historical brits, everythings just red and blue! lol
The idea was to make fancy paradestyle uniforms to fit with the universe we use. :)
-
I'm of course prepared to take a lot of flak for not just doing them straight up and normal.
Imagine they're equipped by a rich gentleman who has the wealth to stage a small army and wage war in India.
-
Red, I think it is more interesting than brown. It would add more to the overall appearance in my opinion.
I really like your flesh btw, it looks great!

TGhanks. The minis are by no means done yet of course. I'm just trying to figure this one part it all out.
-
No, dont got me wrong - I was disappointed that I had not the imagination to think of it myself. Its a brilliant idea and I was imagining the grey rolls AND the white uniforms.

Two mainland Europeans trying to communicate in English! Gotta love it! lol
Hmm perhaps I should put grey back on the menu. The thing I hate is that I've already done 20 in brown... and then it struck me that there were other colours in my paint rack too! :-X
-
I'd go for a lighter shade of brown myself.

I know what you mean. I realised a couple of days ago that I hadn't put any facings on my British troops at all! :-X
-
I would go for the grey option myself.
I think that the choice of the colour has something to do with the environment they are called to serve.
As for facings: Red or blue.

make them 3!

Grey...........or brown if you don't want to repaint the 20 you've already done! :D

Hmmm the jury is still out.
In our campaign the Prussians are completely surrounded by british army in India and thus must rely on native Afghans for safe passage from afghanistan (or beloochistan) through the Bolan Pass and through the british defense of Mooltan.
As a diversion from my prussian debacle I've begun working on the afghans instead.
I value speed more than anything and I think this is decent enough for gaming standards. Note the model is not entirely done (obviously the black parts need paint.. ).
It is also a bit of a disaster because I used gesso to prime the minis but apparently - and this have never happened before - the gesso didn't dry evenly... and some part of the mini is chunked and details gone by the gesso.

That afghan is a cracker :-*

Sure is

Thank you my dears.
I'll unveil the project in it's entirety to y'all then:
60 prussian line infantry (Foundry French Prussian War)
30 prussian sailors (Old Glory austrian sailors)
30 afghan partisans (Old Glory Pathans w/ swords)
Quite a lot of miniatures. I'm going to use a modified version of GW's science fiction game in it's 2nd edition (akin to necromunda if that rings a bell, only unit based).
It's a matter of sticking with something that I think works and not because they're the best rules ever (to me they're the best yet though.. simple and dim). In fact all I care for are vulgar displays of miniature niceness.
The vehicle park is also bulging out with 2 steamtank units, 2 ironclad boats and a single APC dinosaur.
The concept I'm taking on with the prussians is that they rely heavily on walkertechnology. I'm thinking star wars inspiration and so on.

A very intersting project, great figures and I like the idea of Prussians in tropical uniforms. :)
Looking forward to seeing more photos and hearing how the campaign goes.
-
Definitely an idea worth stealing in the future. I would be tempted to have them in the Feldmutz (?) rather than Pickelhaube for colonial wear. I like the real colonial uniforms as worn in Africa, but this is a very good fictional option.
For what it's worth, I'd go for a grey or brownish-grey shade for the blanket roll.
Your Afghans are a very piratical bunch - they remind me of those in the "Peshawar Lancers" novel :)

I'm about to settle for grey too .. or brown! The red is going out..
I wanted the afghans to light up the table I think. I didn't do much research though, as all I seemed to find showed white, black and sandcoloured clothing.

Slouch hat or sun helmet would be my pick, but then they would look less like archetypal "Prussians" which is probably the look you want for VSF. I think the ideal compromise would be a pickelhaube with cover and a neck curtain against the sun. But they might look a little too World War One then.
-
This may come as a shock, but I intended to do white prussians with pickelhaube all along. ;)
It was originally inspired by napoleonic austrian uniforms before the shakos.
-
Don't get me wrong, I think they're fine, and it's a great look. I was just thinking aloud. Well, not aloud: in pixels on a screen. You know what I mean. :)
There is something about white uniforms that looks damn cool. If I were going to get into big battle gaming I think I would do some 1859 Solferino Austrians (though it's a pity that they seemed to be, for the most part, bloody awful soldiers). I think Blue and Red vs. White is a great look for the tabletop. And what colour do you get if you mix them together?
Magenta!
(That was a joke, though not a very good one.)

What are the Old Glory minis like in the 'flesh'? I've heard very mixed reviews of OG and am working on a bunch of Afghans (foundy Baluchis) at the moment.

Hey! Those OG Pathans paint up rather nice. I have mentally discarded all things Old Glory.

That is exactly what I was thinking!

Well.. they aren't Wargames Foundry... but then again - foundry also have some serious issues with old molds.
Some of the sculpts are more crude than other. But there are some genuine diamonds in their ranges I think.

very nice collection!

Wonderful collection you have there!
I especially like the Afghans and the Prussians.
Thanks for sharing.

Really nice army? :-*
what make are the marines.
Prussians turned out really really nice :-*
-
Yes, the finished Prussians look great "in action". My earlier reservations about using the Pickelhaub have gone and I think they are ideal for VSF colonial troops :D
Not being critical, but maybe if you gave a steel dry-brush to the areas of the track that come in contact with the ground, the landship would look even better?

Ugh! I had my nose so deep in the minis that I didn't even notice that I had forgotten that bit... whoops!
-
Fantastic army there. The Prussians look great in white.
You've only got, what, 70-odd figures left to paint? ::)

Don't know what to call these yet. They're prussian steel gun turrets. Two armed with cannon, and one with a haubitze.

Don't remember if I¨ve shown this one before. Old Void dinosaur, now aiding the prussian war in India. I'll be adding some guns to the sponsons sooon.
-
This is an outstanding army!
Good idea with the VOR model. I had totally forgotten about it.

Thank you. I might add that I've drilled the "rivets", added the gun, the sponsons, the chimney and the top hatch myself. But the model is easily made VSF. Only reservation for me is the leaning front armour.

:-*
Coming out really nice, mate.
Can't wait to see what you come up with next!
