Title: Conquest Games - Myths of Albion range
Post by: Cubs on 04 September 2018, 12:14:17 PM
The latest offering from Conquest Games is an interesting mix of gigantic types and some folkloric stuff. I'm told they will be in the Conquest Games store over the next few weeks ready for Christmas.

First up is a Stone Giant, complete with granite-like skin (about 65mm tall).

Next a manky looking Ogre with scaly skin (I painted the scales on, so he could be a smaller giant too, about 48mm tall).

And to finish off the giants, a pair of Hill Giants (each about 55m tall). The brief was to paint them looking as filthy, dirty and smelly as possible, with the matriarch giantess having brutal stretch marks from squeezing out so many giant babies over the years.

And then the next lot are mythological creatures.

First is Geol and fatted boar, the spirit of Winter.

Next is Eostre, spirit of the Spring.

Sadly things now take a disturbing turn, with the Tooth Fairy, who is less discriminating about taking teeth than I was led to believe.

And finally a demonic Nightmare, something to keep you awake at night.

Wow! Those are all superb, but the giants are something else! The faces on the hill giants are the stuff of nightmares, and the stone giant's skin is amazing.

Brilliant figures too - always good to see giants that are monstrous, gross and downright disgusting rather than just big people!

Not keen on some of the sculpts, but that's just a matter of taste.  The painting on all is very good, but those giants... really excellent work.   :)

There's an amazing "neighbour from hell" vibe about that hill giantess. You can imagine calling the council again and again and again ... and yet nothing happens, apart from more of your family and livestock eaten. And the parties ...

Top paintwork, natch.
I agree the sculpts are a mixed bag. Although I do quite like the tooth fairy. The rabbit/hare goddess is just deeply fecking weird.

But my overwhelming feeling is one of deep perplexity... This a very peculiar follow up to plastic Normans and Baron’s War era knights... Talk about diving off at a tangent... Odd.

I’m a huge fan of folky British weirdness, myth and legend. I think there’d be a great wargaming market for it. I just wish it had been undertaken by a manufacturer and sculptor with a track record in / flair for fantasy subjects...

But the paintwork - flawless. You have sent them gorgeously clad into the world, Cubs.

I wasn't fond of the first giants from Conquest, but really like these. I think some, if not all, will hopefully make their way into my growing (ha!) giant collection. Amazing painting on all of the figures, giants & others.  :-*

Post by: Cubs on 05 September 2018, 10:58:02 AM
Thanks all, very kind. I hate painting big open slabs of model - I never really know how to adds interest and depth to an area devoid of detail, so I figured I had to do something interesting with the skintones on the hill giants or they'd be very iffy. I Googled some unpleasant skin conditions and went for a blotchy unhealthy look, with purplish patches in the 'creases' (eeuuww) and yellowy bits on highlights, all stippled on with a tatty brush. I was happy with how the effect turned out

The rabbit/hare goddess is just deeply fecking weird.

She freaked me out the most despite (or perhaps because of) the happy cheerful flavour. That animal face … reminds me of the scene in The Shining.

But my overwhelming feeling is one of deep perplexity... This a very peculiar follow up to plastic Normans and Baron’s War era knights... Talk about diving off at a tangent... Odd.

Conquest Games has a growing range called 'Myths of Albion', which is their delve into fantasy. It has the undead dudes and goatkin (Chaos Broo) that I did for them a few months back and these are the latest additions. They're definitely aiming to provide something a bit different from other companies I think, with a real vibe of quirky weirdness.

A couple of Necromancers now. I don't know if they're going to be available singly or as a twin pack. Can I count these as a Deadcember offering? If so, I've squeezed under the wire by a matter of 11 hours.

A pair of druids now, male and female. These took ages because they have loads and loads of fiddly wizardy things dangling from them and because I wanted to get an iridescent effect on the raven feathers. Note the feathers on either could also be painted as leaves (spells and potions, for the making of) which is why the male druid has some leaves tucked into his belt instead of more feathers.

New releases available soon - Fenodyree (Goat Beastmen, very like Runequest Broo) command, including the big Leader/Champion, Shaman, Horn Blower and Standard Bearer. Also, Svartalfar (like nasty little subterranean Goblin things) with shields (the same models as the standard Svartalfar, just with wicker shields added).

I like the mix of Goat-headed and Human-headed styles with the Fenodyree. I specifically wanted the standard to have a Demonic design that was more occult than fantasy. I Googled this (no idea what it really is, but it cropped up a lot of times) and the letter symbols should really be at the point of the star inside the outer circle, but it was too small so I put them inside the ring instead.

The Svartalfar shields have a central boss, which was tricky to paint because these guys are meant to be stone-age gribblies who hate metal of all kinds and avoid it. Thus I painted the boss as a black stone with a bone surround (vertebrae or fingers in my imagination). I figured the stone might be a talisman of some sort, perhaps a mystical link to a controlling influence. Or something.

Thanks guys, very kind.

So easy it's embarrassing. I literally just painted it a darkish brown, then dry-brushed in towards the centre in successive highlights, finishing with a nice cream colour. This was very lightly drybrushed around the outside edges, just to delineate a bit. The symbol is something I Googled then carefully painted on in a diluted dark red colour. It went wrong a couple of times (ever tried painted a circle on a wobbly surface?!) so I had to touch up with the cream again here and there, but it wasn't overly taxing in truth, just a bit slow.

It's not the stance, he does have stumpy legs. He's about 45-50mm tall I'd say, very much a sort of Ogre, Small Giant kind of dude.

Great work on those! There's something all too horribly human about the way you've rendered those giants: the whiff of too much cheap booze and perhpas a hint of Sawney Bean?

A great paint job on a cracking figure.
In some ways it is better that he is shorter, as you say, he would make a great Ogre and maybe an excellent Oni-type figure too.

Not quite sure that panthers really fit into the world of early English myth and folklore that the rest of the range is sprung from, but maybe Conquest were thinking of the big cat of Bodmin etc  ;)

Not sure if this fella will be added to the Myths of Albion range or another fantasy one, but this is Conquest's latest beastie, the Desert Tiger (designed by the owner's very young son in a pencil drawing no less!). It's reminiscent of the Citadel Chaos Hound with scorpion tail, but a bigger, feline version.

Part of Conquest Games' foray into eastern themed fantasy (so not strictly Myths of Albion, but I don't think the range is up yet), the Genie (and lamp). He's a big lad, about 55mm-60mm tall. About the sword ... you know when you start adding decoration and get drawn in and don't know when to stop? Yeah, that happened.

A couple of Summoners to go with the Genie; Mike at Conquest Games tells me these two will be sold as part of the usual 'wizard' twin-pack when released, but also in a bundle with the Genie. I don't usually paint in light, bright colours, but I needed to go out of my comfort zone for this one. I also had to learn how to paint sheer fabrics for the beguiling female Summoner and it went okay, but it's fair to say I'm still learning.

A nice big bundle of new releases from Conquest Games, for their Myths of Albion goodies.

First up, some folklore characters.

The Brownie is a helpful little spirit who does the household chores at night in return for a bowl of cream. With hands and feet worn red with work, the Brownie will play pranks on lazy servants and will leave any house if they feel offended.

Puck is another mischievous spirit who may play tricks or be helpful depending on his mood, but is also a romantic sort who is known to fall for a pretty girl.

Red Cap is not so much mischievous as a murderous little bastard. This malevolent spirit will murder people simply to dye his cap in the blood of his victims. Nasty git.

This pack consists of more Svartalfar (primitive subterranean goblins) for the Myths of Albion range, armed with stone spears.

And last but not least, a great Pied Piper bundle.

Here's the Piper himself (any resemblance to Jethro Tull's frontman is, I'm sure, completely coincidental ....), with (agonisingly hand painted) diamond pattern coat.

A nice little rat swarm.

And a very funky giant rat 'Rat King', the (probably mythical) phenomenon of a number of rats with entangled tails living as one. According to myth, they share a hive mind, with an intelligence far beyond that of their individuals.

What, mythical?  You mean the Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents is fiction?  :)

The coat on the piper looks like it was a nightmare to paint but it certainly came out beautifully.

I recall encountering the Rat King for the first time in 'The Ballad of Halo Jones' in 2000AD. It was ... very weird.

They're one of the more peculiar bits of European folklore, yeah.  They're not actually wholly fictitious, just usually either faked after death like taxidermied jackalopes.  The few (partially) living ones have either been ghastly birth defects or had their tails entangled in foreign substances on top of being broken and knotted together.

If the internet is to be believed there are also recent (like 2005 and 2013) cases of "squirrel kings" on record, which strikes me as even more terrifying.

wonderful painting on brilliant figures.

that sheer material effect on the summoner is superb.

And the Ian Anderson figure. Can there be any other musician who's had two figures produced modelling him from his heyday (Otherworld also do one) ? !
This latest one is very good. Wonder if he's aware of them.

the painting of the diamonds on his coat is just amazing.

Oh, you shameless flatterer you, get away with you. No special paints, but Vallejo is my usual go-to. I buy the empty 30ml pots and blend up the most used shades, usually in 4 stages (fleshtones get 6 stages). It saves me a lot of time and effort in the long run.

New releases from Conquest Games - some padding for their existing guys in Fenodyree with Hand Weapons and Fenodyree with Hand Weapons & Shields, plus Svartalfar with Spears & Shields, BUT also a lovely new Ettin.

Ettin first, cos he's big. He's so big, you can see the rip in my backing paper.

Those are great! I like the style of the sculpts and your painting brings out the character and texture on each one. Which is no surprise to anyone who has followed this thread, of course - I go back to the beginning and peruse the pictures whenever I need inspiration for painting my own dark ages fantasy themed figs (they never turn out as well, though)!

It's been a while, but here is the latest batch of new release from Conquest, to go with their Wealdgeist (forest spirits) range. Once again the gloriously lovely 'Moss Effect' gloop I get from Great Escape Games was sloshed around madly.

Stone Golem - a great hulking Ogre-sized model with a broad back perfect for cluttering with all sorts of extra foliage and such.

Dryad - she's a lovely model with a very delicate separate spear (and hand) you can position in a number of ways. I've glued it to her leg for added security.

Thanks dyoods, the mossy effect on the Stone Golem was the lovely 'Moss Effect' liquid, then a light stone grey drybrush over the top and some patches of green ink to really deepen the moss in places. The tree on the top is easily snipped off if you want it gone, or it's just as easily enhanced and added to if you want more greenery.

Some more creatures done for Conquest Games now, and lovely miniatures they are too.

First up is a Buggane, a large ogreish creature in the Isle of Man, known for being fond of violent practical jokes and bursts of anger. The model comes with two head options, the traditional horned version or a rather lovely mole-rat style.

More reinforcements for the gribbly Svartalfar with a snazzy Command Group, plus a rather pretty Shambling Mound, who looks like a great option for any number of weird tentacled horrors. I don't think they're available just yet from Conquest Games, but I presume they'll hit the website in the New Year some time, perhaps as part of a spring rollout.

As you can see, the Command Group consists of (l to r) musician, champion, standard, leader and shaman.

Been a while, quite a stretch since the last batch, but it's a biggie this time.

Okay, this commission had me tearing my sparse hair out by the handful, because this greying old dog had to learn some new tricks and pull off effects I haven't tried before. So, without more ado, here are the latest models about to be released by Conquest at some point in the (hopefully) near future.

Palug Cats - black panther-like semi-mystical creatures with skeletal tails.

Svartalfar riding Paulg Cats - those naughty rascals will take advantage on any poor beast they get their mitts on.

Troglodyte - subterranean beast that's a cross between a troll and a dinosaur.

Fuath - Scottish water demon. Don't stare too long at the eyes or you'll go insane.

And last but definitely not least, a Mora and Waerloga summoners. The Mora is an inter-dimensional being whose 'body' is not entirely solid, as it's not entirely within our dimension, but is partly a gateway to other dimensions.

Fantastic work as always Cubs.

Just to let everyone know, the Mora, the Waerloga (warlocks in everyday parlance) and the Troglodyte are all up for sale on our webstore in the Hlawgast faction area of our Myths of Albion range. The Palug cats and their riders will be available very soon, and the Fuath hopefully next month.

They look amazing as always. And that starry cat is something I just haven't seen done this way before. And it looks grand.

That reed on the fuath's base - is that bought or did you make it yourself?

They're all amazing, but the Mora is next level stuff! Hugely impressive.

the Mora is amazing.

and you're not joking about the scottish beastie's eyes.

* and just to say, all the paint-jobs are fantastic, coz everyone's mentioning the astounding Mora.

** and yes, get the comic ref.. There was a character like that - outline with stars etc where the body should be, wasn't there.
Was it Kirby - or someone like Jim Starlin, with his Warlock / thanos stuff? ... or come to think of it, maybe in Dr. Strange ...

Aw, you guys, you make my heart sing. I do love the attention.

and you're not joking about the scottish beastie's eyes.

They make your eyes water don't they? I painted it and I had to keep blinking and rubbing my eyes.

nice, looking forward to the Palug being available... how big are they?

The Svartalfar are little fellas - like Goblin sized creatures - so the Palug Cats are around a realistic leopard or large dog size next to standard 28mm.

They look amazing as always. And that starry cat is something I just haven't seen done this way before. And it looks grand.

That reed on the fuath's base - is that bought or did you make it yourself?

I found the Mora infuriatingly difficult to paint, because I was trying to paint a 2d dimensional portal thing on a 3d figure - so the white border needed to be seen from front and back, but from the side it just looks like it's got a white stripe down it! The reeds were another infuriating experience, best summed up by my ranting here - https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=146607.0

This group of figures may have taken a toll on you as you lost hair & sanity but they look fantastic.
