A long standing project of mine has been to create a fortified medieval bridge to refight Osgiliath. Never had the space or materials (until now!) It is finally taking shape... W. 130mm with roadway 100m across, L a whopping 1080mm, which will be increased to about 1500mm when the gatehouse is added. Will be made in 3 main sections plus the gatehouse.
Designed with one (possibly two) removable spans, and will be suitably battle scarred by the time it is finished.
There will be a tower gateway at one end which will double for the main gatehouse of the Rammas Echor (another project), along the lines of this lovely example in Girona.

Very impressive piece of terrain! Looking forward to the next steps ...
:o
-
Certainly looking good so far. I really like the shaping of those buttresses - you have more patience than me.
You know the score - regular updates and you cant back down now :)
-
Sweeet! Looking very good and promising! I want more! :)
-
A great start no doubt. Where did you get all of the buttress works and such??
-
Excellent start. I'm really looking forward to seeing the completed model being over-run by Orcs ;D
You appear to have captured the look of the films, yet it will also be very useful for many historical scenarios.
No sleep or meal breaks for you until it's finished, or else! lol
-
That looks to be a stunning piece of terrain.
By the way what is the pale green material you are using? It looks as though it can be shaped and scored.
-
Latest developments. The main build is using styrofoam, like the pink stuff regularly featured in GW publications - a variety of insulation foam which can be sanded, scribed and cut very easily

A view along the bridge towards the planned gatehouse/barbican
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02448.jpg)
Not one but two breaks in the span have been designed to be removable for siege games.
A mock up of the gatehouse/barbican which will have drawbridge and portcullis and double for the gateway of the Rammas Echor wall (a n other construction project underway).
Blank arcading and detailing on one of the approaches. Age and battle damage to be incorporated before undercoating and painting commences...
-
that's a Huge work!!! congratulations!
Maybe you should post it also on workbrench!
-
That's brilliant! What a great centrepiece for a siege game!
Looking forward to seeing how the project progresses.
-
Nicely done!
fantastic project! 8)

I wish I had the patients for a task like that. Everything that has to do with working exact over a longer period of time starts getting me ichy and I tned to leave it at some stage.
Nice work!
-
This looks excellent mate :) Absolutely fantastic work!

The gatehouse is slowly taking shape. The drawbridge and portcullis are in the process of being constructed. Once the internal arrangement is worked out I can begin to clad the main passageway. The beginnings of the talus is emerging, which will fit onto a further plinth to bring it to the correct height for the bridge. The rest of the building is a more straightforward build by comparison. It is designed to be in three sections for ease of storage
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02457.jpg)
-
Doh. Let me rephrase that: mega doh. :o :o :o
-
The gatehouse is changing quite rapidly now and taking on a more realistic appearance. Once the basic build has been completed, I can fill/cover any cracks and then begin the laborious but fun process of adding surface detail.

The result of 1hr of surface detailing

-
Thats pretty impressive ;D
-
Coming along nicely...keep up the great work!!
-
What's that Coldplay song, "No-one Said It Would Be Easy" or somesuch lol
Looks like it's going to be a long job, but should be well wotrth it at the finish.
Keep working and posting pics :D

One of the approach ramps finally gets an undercoat. Some lowlights to do with ink once the bridge is glued in place, some fine detailing work, and some more drybrushing after that before this section at least is complete
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02460.jpg~original)
-
The bridge gets buttresses on one side and that 'lived in look' from multiple artillery strikes and other battle damage
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02474.jpg~original)
-
Flanking the bridge will be baseboards with flooring, steps, ruins etc. in low relief onto which rubble and ruined buildings can be placed.
One base which has reached the undercoat stage with alleyways, drains, floors etc. using a number of different surfaces from flagstones, cobbles, and tiles in different patterns and arrangements.
Each baseboard starts life as a simple concept - in this case an aisled building with a bell tower - the footprint for a future ruin model is mapped out and the surrounding ground laid out
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02477.jpg~original)
To create the impression of height in low relief steps with a slight backwards slant are used. Every scrap of foam left over from other building projects can be used in this way...
-
The main centre section is nearing completion now

With one removable span taken out
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02573.jpg~original)
With both spans removed
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02574.jpg~original)

Your bridge is really coming along nicely. I really enjoy all of the pictures and the steps you are taking the time to show us!! Keep them coming.

Titanic work! :-*
-
That is looking fabulous ;D
-
Not to disappoint, further progress has been made to stonework and the undercoat to the water effect on the baseboard
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02585.jpg~original)
Sentries survey the damage
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02586.jpg~original)
And finishing decorative effects to both approaches - the tree of Gondor applied in the same way as the stonework with a pencil to create a low relief effect which (hopefully) will stand out with dry brushing

That's awesome!
-
Getting better and better all the time.
The "white tree" motifs on the pillars are great - definitely a technique to copy!
Also, I love your proxy Gondorean figures :)
-
This is so cool! I love following your progress. Keep up the amazing work!
-
Work on the bridge all but finished. My attention has now transferred to completing the gatehouse
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02625.jpg)
-
That looks fantastic. :o
-
What a great idea!
Can't wait to see it completed.
Smashing!
-
Running out of superlatives, but that's one hell of a project. I'm really envious.
-
I agree about the superlatives!! :o :o :o :o :o
Absolutely stunning!! Thanks for sharing.

Both bridge approaches now complete
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02655.jpg)
The barbican/gatehouse slowly takes shape. Ballista damage has been added to the second tower and the gateway develops further
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02652.jpg)
The additional base which links the drawbridge to the main bridge with corbelling to support the drawbridge in place
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02656.jpg)

That is lovely sukhe! I still have a very soft spot for LotR gaming. I like the non-GW miniatures you are using to.
-
Man, that is the sweetest looking bridge! I wish my Mordor orcs could invade across it o_o
-
That finished bridge would be perfect for holding an entire game on. Who needs the rest of the terrain (except maybe some water to go over).
If you ever get tired of it, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands. :)
-
Thanks for the accolade Operator5, but I'm looking forward to a long association with this edifice, if and when I ever get it completed that is...
A little bit further on. A view of the reverse side of the gatehouse now that I've inscribed the detailing on the walls etc.
I add peat brown ink lowlights to the detailing before using a combination of wet and drybrushing to recreate the stonework
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02676.jpg)
N.B; the doors leading apparently to nowhere are for use when the gatehouse is part of the Rammas Echor. They connect to the wall walk of the Rammas ramparts.
-
There are no words to describe the sheer awesomeness of this project! :o
-
Gorgeous project and very inspiring approach to create it! I can imagine you'll have much fun gaming on it ...
:-*
-
Of course I have to ask, are you planning on more ruined buildings to go on either side of the river? I really want to know how you are planning to use this piece.
-
The plan is to have the bridgehead at the centre of a series of textured terrain boards. These have been designed to show ruined flooring of different styles - cobbles, tiling, paving etc., walls etc. up to the water edge and have been modelled in very low relief for ease of storage. I can then superimpose ruined buildings supplemented with bases with piles of rubble/debris (the scraps left over from the modelling) onto these 'floor plans' at appropriate points. I've deliberately avoided a more random approach to the terrain since I wanted to convey more of the former grandeur of the city. I have been heavily inspired by archaeological dig sites etc.
The concept is sketched out plan if you can follow my scribbles
(http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x200/sukhe_bator/Men%20of%20Gondor/DSC02677.jpg)
-
Absolutely stunning!! :o :o :o :o :o
Sheer brilliance!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I really like the convenrsions on the Man-at-Arms with the shield!!

A truly beautiful piece of architecture. :o Well done!
I love how you plan everything out so well and it appears to come together as planned!
Hope to see the whole of Osgiliath one day soon. ;)
-
One day... I'm gearing up to returning to this project now that I have some ideas for the ruined buildings. I'm a little annoyed my baseboards have warped somewhat in the interim!... :-[
-
Oh how wonderful job!! :-* :-* :-*
Truly a great project and very well done!
Look for updates at this beautiful work.
My best compliments!!!
-
Another piece of terrain building I'll now be following with deep interest. That is a truely splendid looking bridge.
-
I've just come across this thread - awesome work indeed! A fantastic bridge and gate house. The figures are a good take on Gondor too - Looking forward to seeing what orcs you will be using.
-
My venerable Chronicle/Grenadier Nick Lund orc horde of approx 120 infantry and 40 wolf riders for the most part, bolstered by a substantial reinforcement of 150 converted EM4 orcs, plus 60 odd GW LOTR orcs and for my Saruman forces approx 150 GW LOTR Uruks...
