Edward Challenger and Alan Quartemain and their Clockwork Howdah
Men of the Life guard and Royal Dragoons
The Situation
The Prussian invasion of England was not going well. Yes, Prussian troops had managed to push into parts of London but the British response had been far more effective than the Prussian command had anticipated. A withdrawal was in order. However before they marched back to the coast the Prussian commanders that were in London decided to strike a final blow. Gathering what troops they could the Prussian launched an assault against the Exhibition of Steam and Clockwork Mechanical marvels that was going on in Hyde Park. If nothing else the Prussians would show the British that they were not the only country capable of creating dangerous machines.

Challenger and Quartemain. Having just recently returned from a safari in what the press are calling: Challenger's Lost World. Quartemain's clockwork howdah stands behind them. Over in Kensington gardens one of the beasts they captured and brought back is on display in a giant cage built specifically for the exhibition.

Prussian Regulars. Behind them can be seen Augusta Yoyodyne, strongest of the Prussian Sparks. Further down the road a line of Klankentruppen march up the road pouring rapid fire into the vehicles on the quad.

The Special Diplomatic Service is represented by a, no worse for wear, "N" and her superior: "M".
British infantry form an honor guard around the quad with the Sgt Harper gun tractors in the center. Once the Klankentruppen started firing the gun tractors swing to the left and begin shelling the mechanical men.
An opening volley from the Tesla cannon. The Sgt Harper's respond almost immediately killing several of the Prussian crew.

Hauptmann Affeonckel working up to charge the quad.
Quartemain's Zulus charge out from the trees. Hot on their heels is Challenger's Marvel. That would explain the smoke and noise coming from the direction of the Kensington Gardens.
The circus comes to town. Affeonckel charges the gun tractors. He disables one but is then confronted by "M"...
...who makes fairly quick work of him.
The Household Cavalry followed up by The Royals swing through the Prussian rear cutting down a good part of the Tesla gun crews. They take serious casualties from the Prussian Regulars who manage to do an about face and fire.
Both the clockwork howdah velocipede grind to a halt. Their motive powers knocked out by Prussian fire. Quartemain and Challenger make life difficult for the Prussian Officers.
Challenger's Marvel feasts on Zulus.
Augusta Yoyodyne sends her exploding dingbots forward. "N" moves in to thwart the mechanical menaces. Short range fire from her pistol causes the lead dingbot to explode. When the smoke clears, "N" is still standing, her macadam brolly having once again saved her hide. Bereft of her mechanical minions and facing several of England's finest, Yoyodyne elects for discretion and retreats to the relative safety of the Jagermonster line.

Zulu survivors outflank the Prussian regulars.
Lt. Braithwaite, aiming to show the Irish guests exactly what a British officer is capable of, draws sword and with a cry of "For the Queen, God and St. George!", he leaps at the monster. Even after its stroll through the Zulu buffet the giant lizard has plenty of room for Braithwaite. Further pictures become unavailable after this was taken.
The Prussians, in no shape to carry a fight any further and content with the havoc they have wreaked on the exhibition fight a hasty retreat back to the coast.
Later that day while viewing the damage done to both Kensington Gardens and the exhibition grounds Prime Minister gladstone was heard to say: "Britain will not stand for this depredation by any foreign nation. We shall respond in kind, of that I am certain. Our first act will be to ensure Dr. Challenger and Mr Quartemain are allowed, nay encouraged to take their wondrous exhibition on a continental tour."
Hosting these games was the most fun I have ever had at a convention. A big thanks to Alfrik, who jumped in and helped with all the terrain while I was still painting troops. Thanks again to all who played in the games and made running them possible.

Excellent campaign. I'm glad to see those dastardly Prussians got the beat down, twack-twack! >:D
-
I am in love with your VSF world. Thanks for all of the enjoyment that I've gotten out of these posts.
-
Now I am really sorry I missed it.
-
Splendid stuff indeed. :) Can't have the Hun in Hyde Park though, what the duce will happen next! I thought we had seen them off last year when they damaged the grass and topiary at Kew Gardens. They wil never learn lol
-
Utterly Fantabulus! :)
-
You have just raised the bar - again! Every episode gets better and better.
Zulus and a T-Rex in Hyde Park - even better than evil exploding toys ;D lol
I love it!
-
I think that may have been my favorite of the lot
excellent show what? pip pip
:D
-
Awesome stuff. It was a lot of fun reading all the reports, but I sure it was even more fun playing them!
-
I knew once the Zulus appeared... the Prussians didn't stand a chance. ;)
-
Great conclusion to a great series of games. :-* :-*
Loved the whole lot.
This has been great entertainment. Already looking forward to your next battle report. lol

What's next?
Queen Victoria in her african attire escorted by Col. Simpson's grenadiers?
-
Thanks for the excellent reports and pictures, most enjoyable. :D
-
Great stuff! I had actually considered trying to get the wife to approve a weekend in SF that just HAPPENED to coincide with KublaCon. Seeing the reports make me wish I had.
Of course, I'd be divorced by now...
-
Mike, thank you very for all the pictures and the reports ! I'm not fond of steampunk stuff but I really like the stry-telling and all the "fantasy" stuff, particularly thr Jagermonsters and Miguelito Loveless. Hauptmann Affeonckel is my hero !
Cheers,
Matt

Superb report and pics - what an excellent game.
-
Very nice. Are "M" and Fräulein Yoyodyne converted Heroclix too?
-
Did the Zulus & Jagermonsters ever meet in combat? That would have been the fight of the century.
-
(http://www.rotanddrivel.com/MN1.jpg)
N is a Copplestone conversion. M originated as a Black Scorpion cowboy
(http://www.rotanddrivel.com/yoyodyne.jpg)
Augusta is a Reaper figure. I took the monkey off her back and added a wrench from a Games Workshop Dwarf Miners set.
Zulu's vs Jagermonsters would indeed be the fight of the century. An dafterwards they would sit down together and talk hats.
-
Thanks, for some reason I thought the three of them were Heroclix.

I'd like to have at go at converting these two myself. Shame it would go belly-up :'(

I re-read your wonderful batrep and suddenly wondered : " Where did he find these wonderfuly cute dingbots ? did he make them himself ?
So I'm sorry to add another "what make it ?" question to your collection because you answered so kindly to all but this one ;)
Thanks,
Matt

No problem at all. They are from the game called Warmachine by Privateer Press. They are called halfjacks and are available as parts in their shop.

...who makes fairly quick work of him.
Do you know who makes the gentlem in this picture?
-
If you mean the man in the topper he has been converted from a Black Scorpion cowboy figure. The second from the right in the photo below.

The English officer in the center of the picture is from Ironclad Miniatures.

thanks

Brilliant report. Your games keep getting better. I applaude your imagination too, Clockwork howdah, excellent. 8)
Did the lightning on your Tesla cannons come from the Marvel Ultimate universe Electro Heroclix figure? If it did, I applaude your imagination again. 8) 8)
-
Thanks very much.
Not Electro, but it is from a heroclix figure. I bought any I could find cheaply that were exuding energy, so to speak.
The Clockwork howdah has sparked a new project on its own. While talking over beers after the game we came up with the plan for a Lost World dinosaur safari that will include several clockwork howdahs of varying design.
-
Was it this figure?

-
Yes, that's him.
-
Phew, that is the Marvel Ultimate universe Electro. I thought my Cilx-Fu had deserted me. lol lol
Which means you do get the double applaude. ;)
