ok now that your over the overly annoying title to this thread....i have decided to eat into my bank and start collecting gangsters for 1920's to 30's gaming. i have recently started attending penarth wargames club thing, they have a whole cupboard full of terrain including both old west and gangster stuff (i hope to re enthuse them, i already have one on my side)
i have ordered some copplestone and rattrap stuff to kick off my collection, but first i went to the local charity shops to see what i could pick up
i found an old van for £2 that i supposed was ok for the period.
it was covered din horrible stickers which i removed and had this shell left.

Looks like a good start, Wisecrack - and it sounds like a fun era to play. I'm in the middle of an Old West project at the moment, and then I want to do some Pulp stuff, but now I'm just thinking of Gangsters! I am SO easily distracted...
The van looks good - looks like a Matchbox Models of Yesteryear, maybe a Talbot van, something like that? Anyway, looking forward to seeing it painted, and to seeing what sort of Gangster models you get!
-
Looking good.
Looks as the same van as this.

Why are you doing an interior?
-
That's a good question, Mac. I never thought of that! If the back doors opened, it would look cool, but I see that they don't.
Mmmm.
-
i really don't know. it caused more trouble than it was worth.... well ill let you judge that.
i had to use my camera phone again as i have no camera any more, it got nicked.

i used a drybrush from black through to dull Grey, personally im a little disappointed. the die cast metal was VERY HARD to paint and it was only until i Matt varnished it that the pain decided to stay on! in the absence of a gangster i used a conquest miniatures Indian for scale. i have since this photo added a bit more detail to the head lights and aim to add a sign on the side, i'm thinking
"Jhon Butchers
Personal Vermin Killer" or something
Well there it is, i have learned a lot but i guess that's how it works.

got my minis in the post today, a bit disappointed as the rattrap productions minis are very small (normal 28's) as opposed to the 30-35mm tall copplestone stuff. even though all the miniatures are lovely sculpts.
now all i need is a good way to do pavement bases, any ideas/links?
copplestone left / Rattrap right

For pavement bases I would try a layer of epoxy or sculpy, and then use something to press into it to make pavers.

I make my own out of embossed plasticard - cut circles with a compass cutter. Remove tabs or integral bases pin and glue.

And I buy resin base from here. LINK (http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/bases/products%20-%20bases%20-%20round%2025mm.html)

And I make my own with GS. Just build up around the integral base and "sculpt" with a toothpick.

As alternative gangsters you could try the Brigade Games ones sculpted by Paul Hicks they are very nice and would fit well with the Rattrap ones

i want to but i cant afford the postage . i wouldn't want to pay it anyway. i love the miniatures though.
thanks for the advice on bases

Your van looks great. I like the interior detailing. Like Hawkeye, I am in the middle of an Old West project as well. I did up the interiors of all of my buildings, because I wanted to....
-
I did pavement pases on my figures with a layer of filler scratched with "cracks" whilst not quite dry. A coat of light grey and a heavy brown wash came up not too bad. Any odd lumps of filler I painted green as plants growing in the "cracks".
-
well i wanted to try all the methods, i decided on putty for now and i will make mold and cast up some more bases if i get more serious in the era.
first up
some more pics of the new and improved van,
blood splats, weathering, signs and more weathering. :P

Nice! I guess the blood-splatter on the van is from somebody standing next to it when they got tommy-gunned. Looks good.
Base on the mini looks nice too - should look great painted up!

i wanted to do pin stripes but the result was just horrible so i went with just brown for now. i plan to do the red somewhere on all of the mini's (the gang)
These are the best pics could get on my 5megapixels

I found a good way to make an inexpensive base that has the look and feel of a sidewalk or concrete road is to glue a bit of small grit sandpaper to a washer then glue the model to that. Black or dark grey undercoat and then a little bit of a lighter grey drybrush and it looks fine.
Nice models, I like the truck a lot.

very nice work love it

based two more this after noon, the boy with the slingshot and a police man. and i painted an old west Mexican who coincidentally is the EXACT same conversion as Duhamels on another thread, that's the reason i painted him it kinda freaked me out.

Here is the cop, almost insultingly bad pictures and just to say, to get ANY decent degree of shading from the GW matt washes, DO NOT expect it to come out matt. this guy was glistening before i put his matt varnish on.

i also painted the boy with the slingshot but he doesn't photograph at all, i will wait for the strom to pass and take some of them in the sun maybe.
