My wife came home from work with a whole bunch of coke bottle caps last night to enter some codes on them for some on-line contest. Then she asked me if I thought I could make some terrain out of them. These caps were a little different than I'd seen before. I took two of them and put them together and they made an interesting barrel shape so I thought they might make good sci-fi cargo containers.

The caps.

The caps glued together into containers. Also made three with regular 2 liter bottle caps.

Some Void minis among the caps to show scale.
Next up will be painting them.

That's ingenuous!
What also works is taking an old computer keyboard and gluing two of the keys together. They make good sci fi crates.
-
simple but, effective.
:)

Great idea.

It is a great idea these containers, but what it is necessary to drink as soft drink!!! lol lol lol lol

Oh no it's much better than that. My wife is a gamer, mini painter, terrain maker, herself. lol

A couple more WIP pics

base cote. I just went with a olive green because that's what I had. Thought it gave them a kind of military supply look.

a bit of drybrushing.

Can't believe I never thought of that! Then again the only soda pop I drink in bottles are in glass ones. Good pull, those look excellent.

Both excellent ideas!
With a 9 year old son, coke bottle tops are never in short supply and luckily I've got two knackered keyboards in the loft.
All I have to do now is find them :(

This site http://www.toposolitario.com/workshop/infinity_miniaturas/signals_n_panels.pdf (http://www.toposolitario.com/workshop/infinity_miniaturas/signals_n_panels.pdf) has some great hazard signs set up just for detailing terrain. Make sure you check out the guy's main site. http://www.toposolitario.com/principal/index.html (http://www.toposolitario.com/principal/index.html) He has some great terrain projects and amazing 28mm card models for free.
Here are the containers with some hazard signs. Looking more the part I think.

I put a light wash on them. It's drying at the moment.

I hate you. ;)

Ironworker, thanks for the links. Sadly I can't get the pdf to open from your link, but I'll try direct from the site.
Those vehicles are superb- just what I've been after for my future wars Police force ;D

How on earth did you manage that? She must be like the holy grail of the wargaming world!

Some good stuff there IW. I have a small collection of caps at the moment as well. I use em for holding minis to paint. Better manipulation when spinnign the model.
Now i ask yeah. For me though, i have put two together like you have for ages with one thing in mind.......sci-fi wheels. What ya think? :-)

Well I got them finished. Not bad for an afternoon project.

I did a dark burnt umber wash then added some sludge seeping out on a few of them just for a bit more interest. Some of the little signs got pretty damaged but I think that actually looks better. Booty worthy a space pirates hold.

Sounds like it would work to me. My next bottle cap project is to make cantina tables out of the caps.

You know, working in a pharmacy, I have access to all sorts of lids similar to what you have above, if you want some variety and some interesting alternatives, PM me and I will drop a few in the mail for you.
It sucks that we cannot recycle the lids, but the drug bottles themselves we do. I bring them home and glue models to them to paint, it is very handy and very free, too.

Mmm, yes. Those are handy too. It is a shame only the bottles can be recycled. They make nice raised areas on walls and hatches. We only get some when one of my siblings or mother gets sick enough to warrant their use.

Here is an example of using bottle caps as wheels. Someone used 3ltr bottle caps for wheels for their Not-Aliens APC for their GWish LV-462 project. Wish they would have finished it. The modified infantry is pretty sweet as well.

Ingenious idea.

I use the lids from 3.4 litre (6 pint) milk cartons to add variety to my sci-fi barrels.
Good idea with the coke bottle lids - you can't have enough barrels.
-
What a great idea. I'll have to start collecting those myself to make some up. They are perfect. Thanks for sharing!!
-
I think I'll try these milk caps.... (bad pic, I know - but YOU try to keep a steady hand with a T-500 in your seeker... ;) )

@Ironworker:Excellent idea. What glue did you use to stick them together?
