I really like that. It's going to be some size if you're doing a whole fort!

I am making modular parts and you can easily create smaller fort. When I finish, it will be about 70x70 cm.

Looks great! This may be a weird thing to focus on, but I really like how you've done the grass and vegetation, lots of variation and graduation.

I like the grass effect too. Very natural. How do you do it?

Thank you guys!

I like the grass effect too. Very natural. How do you do it?

I used several types of static grass (summer and autumn). Pva glue, put one layer of grass as base, then put different types here and there randomly.

There is a Roman fort just down the road from me. It is called the Lunt fort
& is just outside Coventry (England). They have several bits of it reconstructed,
they look just like yours. So similar that at first I thought it was your inspiration.
Excellent work.

Very interesting build. It's nice to see the enjoyment of the whole building process in the model it's self.

Mark.
( recommend a look at the Past in the Park Facebook page there's over 250 pictures of the life size Roman fort build that started last year. All done by re enactment groups in full gear. You should definitely find some additional inspiration there.(( sorry cant get a link to work ))

Are you planning to do all four sides? It looks like you will be needing a bigger table  :o  at some point, if you do.

Yes, I will make all four sides... I am not a wargamer (unfortunately). The model is modular and I can remove 2 sections from the middle (one side has gate section and corners etc), but without tents inside.
My plan is to create few diorama scenarios with galic/german/dacian attack on fort and battles with my roman legion.

Excellent  8)

I think the stakes work well as a separate element but could possibly do with being pointed a bit lower to the ground ?
Title: Re: Roman fort
Post by: Pinno on 03 June 2019, 12:47:36 PM
Thanks...

I was thinking the same but not 100% sure.  :? When they are lower,  infantry can easily go through it. If barbarian attack as a horde a longer stakes are much better I think.
Cavalry are useless in both case.

James is right from a gaming aesthetics view point. Your much more on the money for realism (less than 40 degrees and they're a hindrance to defence and a leg up for attackers). Like James I'd recommended continuing with the stakes as separate elements As they're a multi functional item in therir own right and don't need to be used just with the fort. If your thinking of a vallum as well then don't for dont forget to orientate the angle of the slopes to the line of sight from the battlements .As its about the only thing that could kill such a lovely build.
The one detail I'd love to see you add is a wooden head quarters and a wooden building under construction. Those in conjunction with the tents. I think that would lift it visually to another level of story telling.

They're very good, and the process looks fairly easy :)

So its a plasticard or cardboard tent, decorated with flower wire, covered with paint and glue soaked tissuepaper?

Yes, plastic card (2 mm), wire and pva glue soaked tissuepaper. After that base paint, washes and highlights.
It is an easy process.  ;)
