Title: Dismounted Burgundian Crossbowmen & Medieval Bits & Bobs
Post by: SirGromit1879 on 30 January 2019, 10:45:45 PM
Hi all. Just primed my first unit of Burgundian crossbowmen. Thought I'd post it here as a work in progress.

Perry Italian crossbowmen with head swaps, riding boots, and hoods added. Was very hesitant at having to convert them but it turned out to be pretty painless in the end and didn't take long so very excited to do more, might try miliput too as opposed to green stuff.

Not too happy with the spurs they are a bit chunky and I should have had the boots flair out a bit where the top folds down but didn't want to mess them up so left them as is.

Will add some more action poses members to this unit eventually, like taking cover behond trees and sharing bolts etc. Also there will be some horse holders just waiting on horses from assault group.

They look excellent - really nice conversions!
Particularly like the one shooting from behind the horse...great ideas, very well executed.

Thank you guys that means a lot =). The horse idea was pinched from more modern conflicts like the camel core firing from behind their dismounted camels. The horse is meant to be wounded but bizarrely couldn't bring myself to have an arrow sticking out of it  :D...might add it when painted

I do wonder if they would have ever trained horses to kneel to use as cover

Some great looking conversions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As stated, the one behind the horse is really great. I will have to steal that idea. What did you do to make that one?

.

Thank you =). Hehe don't worry I stole the idea from somewhere, was either a Napoleonic or colonial painting can't remember.

I just cut of a little of one side of the horse so he was a little bit more flush to the base, then chopped the two upper legs and rearranged them and filled with green stuff. Was really quick to do. In hindsight though I should have payed more attention to the joins as they are a bit tough. Also I can't believe it but forgot the stirrups!.

Hope this picture shows a bit better what I mean. Really simple and quick to do.

These are great!

I've used the same metal Perry crossbowmen and handgunners myself twice over, giving them all headswaps the second time round. I've been meaning to try adding some riding boots like you've done on dismounted crossbowmen and longbowmen.....

When do we get to see them painted?

Thanks guys =). Almost finished the horse and crouching rider. Bit apprehensive to paint the crossbowmen as not happy with my medieval painting style. Will get these done this week and then look into non metallic painting for armour.

Finished some medieval bee keepers, the skep was inspired by the excellent tutorial on Pauls Bods blog. Had to use green stuff in the end as i had bought the recomended bawling twine for the skep last year but have lost it!. These will probably not be based and just be placed onto a cottage scene with a skep shack.

Unfortunetly i do not think the face mask is accurate, as from what i could see they used a circular woven disc like mask instead, but i could not figure out how to do it so just went with a criss cross mesh instead

Finally got these to the paint stage, not had much time lately so these have taken ages to finish. Dismounted Burgundian crossbowmen horse holder bases. Will base 3 horses on a single base for these and perhaps add some little bits and bobs like crossbows and unsaddled equipment. Might make another smaller one with left over bits. Would like to have a flag too but not sure if they would have carried more than one because would like to have the mounted versions of these with a standard.

How did you do the stirrups and reins?

Title: Re: Dismounted Burgundian Crossbowmen & Medieval Bits & Bobs
Post by: SirGromit1879 on 12 April 2019, 03:54:53 PM
Thank you guys!. The reigns are green stuff rolled and flattened out. The stirrups are green stuff for the curved shape and then a little piece of plasticard for the base. Most of the stirrups came out more chunky than i liked and some are completly wonky but in the end i was just rushing and got fed up of them lol. Next time will make the plasticard a lot thinner and also the green stuff bits too

Finally got these finished, has been bothering me for months, now these are out of the way can start on new ideas. These are Burgundian horse holders. Originaly planed to have them on 2 large bases but decided last minute to base them individually so they are more flexible if dismounting in a forest or compound etc. Need to make one more base so that when all of them are put together it looks almost like they are on one large base.

Got so much to start and finish before January im a bit overwhelmed by the task lol. Thinking it might be best to have everything started or prepped and then i will know all that is left to do is paint paint paint. So going to have till the end of August converting figures and constructing buildings and trees then that will be the cut off.

Oh wow - fantastic! That's come together so well, a real triumph!

The dismounting one is my favourite, excellent posing. Also like the colour of his horse - what paints did you use?

Are the non-Perry horses from TAG? I wasn't sure about them at first, but they've painted up very nice indeed.

I'm sorely tempted to try something like this myself one day....

What's next on the list then?

Those are lovely. Really like the vibrant colours, something I seem to struggle with.

Those are brilliant. Great creations, and great painting too.

Now you just need to crop your pictures! :) (They'd look even better!)

Lovely stuff. Nice paint job and great to see a conversion which is so original.

Thank you for the kind comments everyone =)

Hi Charlie i will dig out my paints tomorrow and let you know which colour it was. The horses are TAG, they do need some conversion to make the saddle look more medieval. When i do some more i hope to greatly improve my scuplting. Good thing about them is you can get away with just adding green stuff straight to the existing saddle instead of having to chop bits of the horse first. I found them harder to paint then the Perry plastic horses and i am not as happy with how they have come out but that is a fault with my painting style rather than the models. I used "Dragon Nag Standing 1" and "Dragoon Nag Standing 2".

Next up hope to do some more on my buildings, need to make a large fortified Barn complex and finish my homestead. That will probably be it building wise unless the Hudson and Allen buildings become available in the UK. Got so many ideas to fill the board up with terrain pieces but no hope of finishing them in the timescale.

Figure wise need to paint

-Burgundian wagon supply convoy with escort (partly made up with mounted crossbowmen
-Supply depot garrison
-Ambushing Swiss and a small pike block
-Burgundian knights relief force

Might try and write out a detailed list of stuff to be done sometime so can help me keep track of tasks and get it all out my head lol

Here is a WIP of the terrain pieces

Absolutely fantastic painting on those horse-holders,   :-* :-* :-*

And the terrain pieces look good as wip. Can't wait to see more of this project.
