Title: More Adobe madness! New buildings added.
Post by: Malamute on 08 June 2009, 08:24:23 PM
I have just finished this set of buildings to add to my Old Mexico/Texas/Alta California town.

I guess any of them would not look out of place in a pirate game either.

A house/cantina and attached row of shops. Made from Foamcore, rendered with Polyfilla, balsa wood doors etc.

The peons were painted by my good friend Dave.

This forum is very useful, but every day I get so many different ideas and suggestions, that I'm not able to decide what project to start. :(

Yes, 6mm MDF. No warping!

Brilliant!

I can feel the hot sun beating down... I can hear the strumming of a guitar coming from the cantina...

Can't wait to see the Governer's headquarters!

Where did you get the accessories?  I love the barrels with the fruit, the cart, fountain and water trough!

Barrels with/without fruit and the fountain are Hovels.

The cart is Front Rank.

Some great looking pieces Malamute. Nicely painted. Love the shading, and add on pieces. They really do have a real-life feel to them. Where'd you get the guy sitting with the hat pulled down in a siesta pose?

As Mexican villager for this time(period), there are the Spanish figurines of the brothers Perry

What a great little village :-)

Two quick questions:

1) What is MDF?

2) Did you actually use fabric for the canopies or a polymer clay?

1) What is MDF?

Medium density fibreboard.

I always thought MDF was an 'Americanism'...
Now I'm wondering what you guys call it, because I'm sure you must have it  ;)

It's a ubiquitous synthetic board used for carpentry and throughout the building industry for all sorts of things. Comes in various weights. Pale brown in colour. Very rigid. Doesn't warp. Easy to cut and work. Just don't breathe in the dust or you die young...

1) The good captain has covered that one.

2) The awnings/canopies are made of tissue paper, glued on with PVA glue first, then diluted PVA and water was brushed on. When it dries it goes quite hard and can be painted.

Bon Idea Duhamel. :)

I have a pack of these, the only slight problem is they are much, much taller than the original Foundry Mexican Peasants. But the dress is practically spot on for the early 1800's Texas/California/Mexico.

The Senora in black with the Mantilla is an excellent figure, she will almost certainly be shaparoning the Governors daughter in a future game... ;)

I would imagine that there is a lot of hours invested in your buildings. Any step by step guide available?  :)

Hi Tim, not as such but I am planning to do one for Matakishi to post on his Teahouse.

Here are links to the earlier models made last year. In some of the posts I mention how they are made.

If you want more precise details PM me.

In the meantime I am starting the Governors buildings on friday and I'll try and remember to take some WIP shots.

It is known by the same thing in the states. It is readily available at any Home Despot or Lowes. Some of them will even cut it into manageable sizes for you.

Malamute, I have checked out your links. All fantastic buildings. Your church is awesome, especially the front door. How did you make that?

Back to the oringinal question. Its made from balsa wood. Basically I cut the wood to fit the arched doorway, then cut many very thin strips of Balsa.
These were then attached to make the raised details on the doors. Its fiddly work and best done with tweezers etc. the hardest part was making the curved detailing around the tops of the doors, but the effect I think is ok.
