I really do like these Artizan Thrilling Tales Cultists:-
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/Pulp/Cultists.jpg)
but I want more of them without doubling up on the figures and want some with clubs, coshes, etc. So I've decided to have a go at making my own using some of the Victrix plastic British Peninisular War Napoleonics as a basis. There shouldn't be much of the original figure showing once I've slapped on the Greenstuff to make the robes, hoods, etc.
I bought a pack of 52 off eBay for £14.50 so that gives me plenty of scope to make mistakes without feeling guilty about the cost.
So here's the first picture:-
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP1.jpg)
I've carved most of the detail off them all, thickened up some of their trousers and started on the first robe.
Feel free to offer all the guidance, advice, etc that you want. Despite having been painting for nearly four decades I have never really had a go at sculpting so I feel a bit of a noobie! :?

Good luck...i wish i had the guts to try something like this. Keep us informed! :D
-
Please keep us up to date. I love seeing conversions.

well started... Wanna see the finished stuff! :P
I also love the cultists! they're wonderfull!!!
maybe you should add more minis without doubling them with the PULP one:

and maybe the gas-masked one:

Nice to see a step by step progess of a WIP idea. Keep sharing or as they say, keep up the "show and tell".
-
Thanks Everyone for your encouragement.
I can't guarantee a daily update but will be as regular as life allows.

I love Bob Murch's figures but his cultists look too different to Artizan's ones so scratch building is the only option.

Well, I've got the basics of their bottom part of their robes done and used white Milliput to smooth them out. So far I'm reasonably pleased with the results:-
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP2.jpg)
Next part is to add a few smaller creases.
Looking at the arms that come with the Victrix figures, their hands are rather small so I am going to have to delve into my bits box.
-
Looking good so far, and a top idea. :) I applaud your use of the plastics as dollies, great thinking!
-
There's been a slight pause in procedings because I thought that I had brass tubing of the correct diameter to do the circle on the cultists chests. Wrong!
So I've ordered the necessary off eBay and in the meantime, sorted out the arms (mainly from GW's Flagellants) and stuck heads on all of the figures, using the originals that come with the Victrix infantry but chopping off the shakos.
I've also had a go at starting the hood things. They are obviously not finshed yet but I'm not really sure how they're going. I thought that the hoods would be a fairly easy task. Wrong again! :?

Having a go at this does make me realise how skillful you proper scupltors are.
-
keep it going I am almost tempted to have a go myself!!!
-
yes, it's very inspiring!
-
Looking good - I always love seeing wips! I picked up some white milliput the other day to try my hand at something however haven't started as yet >:D

Excellent work... ;)

Well, I think I got bit carried away and forgot to photo the figure a couple of days ago but this is where I am tonight with one of them (from four views):-
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP4a.jpg) (http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP4b.jpg)
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP4c.jpg) (http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP4d.jpg)
It still needs a bit of carving away with a scalpel and it needs the addition of a small circle on its cowl.
In general I am reasonably happy with it for my first attempt though I admit that the arms are a bit long. The hands seem about the right size (compared with the other Artizan figures) so I am going to have to carve just a couple of millimetres off to stop them looking like apes.
Now to get going on the others which are a fair bit back in the conversion process.
-
Looks good. This is a really great project. If the arms are too long I can hardly notice it, if at all.

Well, I've finished the first one (the one on the left) as you can see:-
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/capthugeca/WIPs/CultistsWIP5.jpg)
It measures up quite well with the real Artizan ones though I am still not happy with the length of its arms - particularly the left one.
-
this is excellent. the miniature looks really nice.
what gun did you use?
how much are you going to save over all?
and the arms look fine. i often fine you get goofy looking poses in metals.

Thanks for your encouragement, TW
The gun was from my bits box and comes from an em-4 Miniatures that I re-armed some years back (see the bottom figure at http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/SCAVENGERS.html (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/SCAVENGERS.html)).
Saving isn't the issue so it's not something I've thought about. I wanted a few more poses and to give some of the cultists knives and clubs so that what the other five will have.

Hugh,
they're darn good!

Great job :-*
Very inspirational. 8)
The arms look fine :-*
I have the artisan cultists and like you I didn’t like the limited number of poses.
Seeing your thread I may try this myself sometime.
Another project added to the very, very long list. :'(
Great work.

Looking good! Excellent work.
-
I'm very impressed - the two figures work very well together! Fair enough, the arms are a little long, but there are far too many experienced professional figure sculpters who repeatedly do this, so with yours being a first time attempt, I wouldn't worry about it. I would certainly be happy to use your figures.
The really good news is that you will improve with each figure you do, so in a few months time the results should be amazing.
Great stuff :)
-
That's the most alternative use I've seen of Victrix new napoleonics yet. lol
You could probably use any old lying around plastic mini for this... use an orc to make a brute.
-
Hmmm... Napoleonic cultists. lol
Great work on him. I love how he turned out.
-
Great job on those cultist! I might have to give that a try.
-
That matchs rather well. He's a little tall and looks to have bell-bottoms, but otherwise I think he looks the part.
-
Ambitious project! & well done!
I like the cultists!!! :-*
-
Thanks for all your kind words, people.
I agree about the bagginess of his trousers. Originally the trousers were rather thin but I rather overdid it.
With the arm-length problem, I think that I will try using Victrix arms with the hands from the GW figures and see how that goes.
One thing I keep forgetting to mention is how good the Victrix plastic is to work with. I don't know how it is different but it is far easier to work with compared with GW and Warlord.
