I've been sidetracked the last two evenings Sat on the sofa. Making a replacement Fokker tri motor . As I gave away its predecessor. So I took the opportunity to tweak the original cereal packet design. The most obvious change (appart from the dodgy photos) Is the removable flight stand which is nothing more exotic than a couple of CD's and a tent peg. There's a sleeve made from a cut down disposable biro pen glue into the underside of the plane just to stabilize the plane on the stand and to add a little strength.
Also the removal of the rounded underside of the wheels
It may not be to everyone's taste . But there's method in the madness as experience has organically evolved the shape of the wheels . To a design that can take the knocks and bumps of gaming. Far better than a completely round wheel made from cereal packet card .( unbased.)
It's not completely finished .As I know there's likely to be some howlers of mistakes and missed spots in the paint (since we appear to be living in a cave with one candle at the moment.)
I thought it might amuse since I've not mucked around with card on the forum for a while.

Wow! Top modelling there. Very impressive.
-
I think it looks smashing. very aggressive & intimidating attitude.
-
Lovely work!
-
Very impressive.
Tony
-
Your work never ceases to amaze me! Well done sir!
-
Amazing :-*
-
Im glad you like it. As it's something I've made several of , it does feel slightly fraudulent. As I've all the templates made (and used more than once.) So its more like a lego kit than a scratch build.I even did a rough tutorial on the original.
However It's paint scheme is strikingly different from the original one I made for myself plus its more versatile with the inclusion of the flight stand.
Mark.

I've been musing over a more useable and quicker/easier to build plane. As a tri motors can be a little on the large size in 28mm.
But I want a plane that has the feel of the Fokker's,Ford's,and the Ju's.
The solution (for me) is the Hamilton's h47. As its smaller and a simpler box construction. The nice thing is either Play with detailing and have a plausible looking model from the same plan. Minor tweak it of the wing position and you've something similar to the Ju's add an engine cowl and it's a different look( plus its a lot easier to build.an cowl)

Mark,
Nice work, yet once again. What does the paint job represent? nation? airline? I don't recognize it.
Lon
-
A lovely model, once again.
By the way, do you shellac the card at all, or just paint it?
-
Stunning job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
What I don't understand, is how you can make some cereal packets look more
like the original aircraft, than I can if I use a kit?!!!!
Great stuff sir.
-
Excellent. True can do spirit. Top stuff.
-
Dead impressive as always! You never fail to astound, Mark.
-
Actually Matt it was you who started me thinking about a useable period plane to act as a versatile base model.
Plus the pulp plane library thread always hitting the stumbling block of the scale wingspan dominating the table top.
Andy.
Not as a rule. Straight onto the card is often the case for smaller models. For larger models I use a spray undercoat. This is useful for finding the areas of card that have loose fibres. As the fibres feather with the spray paint . Once dry I sand off the loose fibres.then lightly re spray.
Lon,
It's a hybrid of Fokker and Ford commercial colour schemes
I used a period paint scheme for the first plane. But it never sat comfortably. It was correct , just felt off compared to the rest of my stuff. I also had lost faith with the original design's As the windscreen was. Bugging the life out of me.
I'm torn on running with Hamilton build or starting with a smaller 4-6 seater. On multiple types of undercarriage.
Mark
-
Thanks Mark. I think that you have a real winner with that design. I also think that the windscreen looks very good on this model.
Lon
-
What an amazing model you have built there man!!...I love the paint and all the neat details that you usually lay into your designs, but what I picked out as my favorite bit of flair, is your use of a tri blade prop on the nose engine, and bi blade props on the wing units. It may be historically accurate, I don't know, but it CERTAINLY gives an amazing aesthetic look to it! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Cheers,
Carl
-
lol
Carl
Spot on it's a subtle change ( although it does exist .) As there's simply no way I could find to position three two bladed props that didn't leaving it looking contrived rather than natural . The three bladed prop just breaks up the line of props enough to make the blades look more naturally positioned.

Once again :-* :-* :-* :-*

This evening as promised, I've had a quick bash at knocking up another more useful sized plane in this case a Fokker Universal(ish). It's a little flawed . So I'll tweak the idea for a second version.
I've gone with this rather than the Hamilton As it's quicker to build .It's considerably smaller than the tri motor. But its actually built slightly over scale.Mainly the fuselage is around 20mm longer and 5-6mm wider. The prop is over sized too. As doing it all to scale left it looking more like a 15mm model than a 28mm one.
(Once again Sorry about the lightning but we've a photosensitive child placed with us at the moment. Feels like I'm working by candle light.I've not yet got the hang of building by sonar ::) )
-
Absolutely amazing! The fact that you construct these models out of basically nothing but cereal boxes puts all other scratch builders like myself to shame.
Well done.

I agree. I am always totally awed and gobsmacked by TSG's cereal packet creations.
-
Cheers Chaps ,
I've managed to chuck a basic paint job at this afternoon as I've sculpted myself into a corner( everything has clay drying .)
I've figured out the tweaking for Mk2 build . For now this one will do
Mark.
-
What freaks me out is how quickly you churn these little gems out! Another very fun and useful pulp plane :-*
-
I would love to see your step-by-step build process. Have you posted anything like that here or elsewhere?
-
lol this is me plodding along. I have been know to churn stuff overnight .
I wouldn't call it a process.(I tend to just make it up as I go along) .
But there's more than a few build on here and several have tutorials including the tri motor. If you look for 'tales from a tin shed' or 'cereal packet card builds)you'll find most.
But feel free to pick my brains(such as they are.)
Mark.

After a sinfully sidetracking post on the Pulp planes thread.
I've passed the evening knocking an Autogyro up, from the usual list of bits.
Mark.
-
Amazing stuff as ever.
-
I blame GDonk,and I'm easily sidetracked lol
As he posted a link to a series of old cigarette cards ..
I'll probably build another plane soon. I've an inkling it might be a passenger biplane. Something a little more challenging.
Mark.
-
Brilliant
-
Amazing! :o A true master!
-
Mad bugger. ;D
-
Huge respect!

I can live with that blame when the results are so awe inspiring :o :o :o

It Happened One Night! lol lol (If you don't understand the reference, you need to catch up on your 30s movies)
-
Thats a Clark Gable film I've not seen in a long time. :D
I tend to knock these up sat watch telly on an evening As I'm prone to the odd history lesson when I try sleep this time of year So I've plenty of spare time lol . But I'm too tired to sculpt that time of night.(effectively ) rather than be awake and bored I beat up cereal packets .
Sooo I may be halfway through another fuselage of another plane.Admittedly I've no idea what plane just one thats sort of designing its self as I go.
-

Interwar aircraft design in a nutshell. lol
-
Working at a company that designs aircraft I'm pretty confident this is still how the drawing office do things.
-
What in they're PJ's with a glass of milk and a couple of chocolate hobnobs :o
-
It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest ::)
-
What in they're PJ's with a glass of milk and a couple of chocolate hobnobs :o
Is there another way to do it?
-
Nicely done! Makes me want to get started on my 1/56th scale Rolls Royce AC.
-
Any chance of a how to? I'm intrigued how you get the smooth curves.
The are glorious.
-
TM get on with it. (Although I wouldn't be put out if you just buy the one I made instead lol )
Rich nothing to it ..
Pre curve the card before cutting out.( but after marking out the part.)
Plasticard and cardboard have a grain
They'll both flex better in one axis/direction than another. ( grain in a loose sense both )and sand scrap in on direction as well.In the case of plastic you'll get clean shavings in the wrong direction a blade will skid and drag ans make much smaller uneven shavings.
Card the right direction it will sand and cut.the wrong way and the card will bur and occasionally snagg ( especially on thinner widths of card) causing it to fold and bunch. Sanding will causing fluffing and feathering.
The trick is the placement of parts on the card taking the above into account.
Biggest tip is precurve, precurve,precurve,precurve!
-
Whilst I'm bobbing around at this time of night. I thought I muight as well post a couple of pictures of the go with the flow build.
I've no idea if its got a real counterpart . As I'm genuinely making it up as I plod a long.
-
Looking good there Mark.
-
Especially impressive as:

Cheers ,
I was toying with idea of making it a 'Swiss army knife' of plane. In so far as it having a separate set of ski's and floats.
That the wheels would slot into.
I suspect that getting sidetracked with retractable wheel bays . That I may have buggered up that concept. As I'm not sure they'd look right once you add floats , ski's would probably still look plausible though.
Planes aren't something I know much about. So I might just make both of them .Simply to see if its workable concept for the tabletop.Rather than worry about the aesthetic .plus I can always make a plane to fit the floats so they dont goto waste lol
What I actually need to make is Crashed plane and another surfaced submarine .
-

Aesthetic is looking pretty spiffy from here...
-
Cheers,
But it's proved a bit of a white elephant. As the wing joints aren't strong enough. Since I originally intended it to be on floats so the wings would have been supported. But I got sidetracked with the engines totally forgetting that I'd not
pinned the wings on. Now it's been recycled as a crashed/wreaked plane.
That's the joy of working on a model late at night!
-
If you had not mentioned cereal boxes involved in this, I would've taken those for resin models. Amazing talent! :o
-
lol no they really are just card and cocktail sticks.
Here's a couple of pics of it around 80% done . As it was used for a run through of Rich H's rules(or would have been if it had been found in the game ::) )
It's still in need of props and some more vegetation( other than mixed hurbs ).
The Autogyro is still in its undercoat as I've lost my mojo for painting blues.
Also just for fun here's one of my favorite builds all card , plus a kebab stick for a flight stand, and the obligatory cocktail stick for machine guns.
-
WOW! Those aircraft look great! I Salute You Sir! :o
This post has convinced me that my thoughts to scratch build some aircraft IS a good idea just going to do it in 15mm scale. :)
-
stunning planes
-
The crashed plane looks really good, a perfect encounter or plot point or objective marker, whatever you want to call it, this would work well.
Very impressive card modelling.
Thanks for posting it
-
I'm seriously impressed by the results! :o
-
Cheers ,
They've been a fun way to fill an evening. The crashed plane has had its first outing .I managed to shoot myself in the foot with it thought ,as it became the focus for several players rather than a single plot point.Totally throwing the game off course.
War monkey. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Mark.
Now next project a Civillian train or Trampsteamer ( I've a swiss army knife of Steamer already . and an Armoured train.so neither are a big leap. I've just not made my mind up on either.)
-
Very, very impressive!
-
Tinkered around with cereal boxes and didn't come out too well, 15mm is pretty small for this size of project, but I could shape wood dowels to the size and shape I need then with my very fine wood burner I could burn in the panels and other details or add heavy paper Panels and details as well. Will take a little work but I really think the results will be great, I work with wood much better.

You need an MBV-2 Rail Cruiser ;)
-
War monkey .I'd combine the two wood fuselage and card wings and detailing.if you add a couple of pictures of your progress Id be happy to see if there's any short cuts I know that will help you in 15mm.
Rich ,
I've only got three feet of track past the station section(still a wip) so just over 4' in total.Even thats putting a strain on storage so tempting as another armoured 'train' is I'm going to stick with this one (I thought it was a forties design? But its trains and I know begger all about trains :D )
Still pretending I don't want a railway gun Only thing stopping me is I've no plans of small English gun. :D

That was my idea as well wood for the fuselage and card for wings or use popsicle sticks for some wings as well with some shaping and sanding and with some different sizes, but of course for larger aircraft I will have to laminate card together.
I will post pictures as soon as I can I have a couple of busy weeks ahead before I can get back to this project.
Thank You for your assistance as well.
-
No worries ;)
-
I'll get you a pic of my mbv2 and railway gun ;)

Don't be soft
-
I genuinely forgot how carried away I got with this
It's got a gun that recoils and has a working breech. Plus all the joints and hinges work...
-
You carried away? Never!
I mean that'd be like building half of Berlin on an impulse lol
It's a bit too posh for my board I'm aiming for a more Heath Robinson feel if only in spirit not execution.
Just out of curiosity how on earth did you envisage using it ?
Stormbird.
I'll take you up on your kind offer although It'll be a while yet .Now that my hand has healed I've a few paid pieces to catch up on.
Mark.
-
It was an objective but bolt action doesn't really care about gun ranges...
How about an MBV2?
Talking of Berlin I've got the idea of the lustgarten now. Two ww1 tanks captured from russia were exhibits. Rumors were that they were used as pillboxes during the last days of Berlin.
-
It's not a rumor they used all the left over armoured cars fron ww1 and the street fighting in the 20's.literally any thing that could be found.
It's just people are not looking for them in the right context.
(You need to look into the history of the clean up of Berlin right upto and including the air lift. Also the flak tower hill.rather than conflict photos)
Your not going to see images of vehicles just bits poking out of hills of rubble.in the same way people under estimate the sheer size of the rubble barricades.I had a similar issue with Austin7's the official club says they never saw active service. Ten minutes of raking throught destroyed military vehicles photographs of the Dunkirk area and you can find image after image of burnt out Austins.
