For a small project I am preparing, I'd to use a shinto priestess miniature in 25-28 mm. Anyone here knows about suitable ones?

Post by: Rhoderic on 08 March 2007, 07:06:28 PM: I presume you're looking for a "shinto priestess" in the meaning of a Miko? "Actual" shinto priestesses are extremely rare today and non-existent historically (has to do with shinto believing women to be "impure" on some level).

Ground Zero Games' "Pandamonium Anime Figures" range has one, it's also called "shinto priestess" but I'm presuming it's really a Miko. No picture, but I expect some converting might be necessary, if you don't want her to have anime-esque features.

I'd heard from Pandamonium, and their "Shinto Priestess" seems to be based in the Sailor Mars character from the anime Sailor Moon... It could suit, but I'd like to see pictures of the miniature because it seems they are sculpted with "cartoon proportions" as you said.... whatever that means :D

I think the Perry Miniatures geisha-like model with a Miko coulour scheme would work very well!

Not so sure about that, myself. The geisha is wearing a kimono, whereas a Miko's chihaya consists of, in Wikipedia's words, "a dark red hakama, pleated pants (like kendoists wear), a white kimono shirt with very long and wide sleeves, and tabi socks". It's a pretty distinct outfit.

Post by: Rhoderic on 12 March 2007, 07:32:55 PM: True. Actually, I'm not a stickler for accuracy myself, so I don't care much about the exact garments as long as the "style" is right. What I wanted to get at, was that the geisha model doesn't really have the right style to me. The clothes a Miko wears are (like the clothes of the shinto priests) a throwback to the court dress of the Heian period. They're meant to have a "voluminous" and "sweeping" look to them, for lack of better words. The kimono of that Sengoku period geisha looks too sensible, in comparison. But that's just me.

Unfortunately, miniatures of Heian period Japanese are hardly plentiful. It's something I've seen people lament before.
