Title: Build Your Own Painting Station
Post by: Curryman on June 19, 2009, 05:30:11 AM
It's not always possible to have a dedicated, full-time painting area. A lot of painters with limited space or a somewhat-intolerant spouse find themselves in need of a portable, self-contained work area that also keeps all the tools of the trade handy and organized. This helpful tutorial explains how to build your own customized workstation cheaply and easily using materials readily available from any craft store. For details, please follow the link.

I made myself one of those about a year ago. Great idea, very functional and I love the padded wrist supports. I have a closet with 3 shelves roughly the same dimensions as the 16"x20" frame where my station lives when I'm not painting.
I was so happy with this idea that I built another Painting Station for models and, using plywood, also made a portable workbench for building kits and other projects on.

Now the closet is totally committed to hobby stuff, which is totally the way it should be!  ::)

Important topic. Good article. I'm moving it to 'How to...' and making it sticky with the hope that other people can show us how they have addressed the problem with a need for a practical workbench within a limited space.

THat was a great little tutorial. Fairly inexpensive, practical and useful. I like the idea of placing the blades into something so that you can prevent or at least reduce the potential for injuries. Thanks for sharing. You just have to love this hobby and all the great people in it who share their wisdom and ideas!! Thank you to everyone else for their ideas too. The worst part is that their are so many great ideas, I want to do them all!! o_o
Regards,
Hitman

The link in the article no longer seems to work.  Anyone have an updated link?  If not, then this post probably no longer warrants a Sticky.

I found it, looks like it just needs some fine tuning for whatever reason...

Build Your Own Painting Station (http://thescreamingalpha.com/?p=866)

Still using my Hyun-style painting station, even after building a nice big custom workbench. This is definitely the way to go to make good, organised use of limited hobby space.

A couple of pieces of advice;

1 - Always build the biggest painting station you have room for.  You will fill it!

2 - countering rule 1, but still worth while repeating.  Build your workstation to fit a cutting board, the self healing cutting boards that you can find in art stores, try A3 or A2 size and then you have a ready made work station as well as a painting station.

The good link is in the second message up. The one where I say: "I found it" (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11695.msg370214#msg370214). Curryman did some reorganising of his blog, it seems, and some of his links went dead, but the content can still be found by those with a bit of Google-fu.

Just to be uber-redundant: Here is the link (http://thescreamingalpha.com/?p=866) to the Build Your Own Painting Station article originally posted at the excellent but now defunct Hyun's Wee Toy Soldiers blog.

Hope this helps.  :D

Excellent idea! I keep meaning to make something like that, but as I live on my own and my mess is my business it isn't as essential as it was.

By the way, what did you use the baby for?

It's really quite basic, one of those great bits of common sense improvisation.

Just an acrylic box-frame (https://www.google.com/search?q=plastic+picture+frames&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=QYAgU_DBHsu8oQSOzoC4Bw&sqi=2&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg&biw=1261&bih=873#q=acrylic+box+frames+16x20&safe=off&tbm=isch&imgdii=_), about 16"x20" turned upside down. That's plenty big to work in and still small enough to carry about the house and hopefully find a home on an out of the way shelf when not in use.

A few bits are added to organise your brushes and paints plus a pot of water to rinse your brushes. These need to be weighted or sufficiently stable to resist tipping over. The original plan used a plastic 'floppy-disk organiser' with lots of holes drilled in the top and a load of weighty stuff (sand?) in the bottom to hold brushes... Good luck finding one now. Just scour the Dollar/Pound shops for suitable cheap containers. The alternative is to use the useful laser-cut mdf stuff that is designed to hold paints and such. But then the project risks not being a money saver.

The last touch is a bit of padding for your wrists as the box-frame needs all its sides to remain sturdy, so you are going to be resting your hands/wrists on the edge of the frame. I used a neoprene mouse-pad.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'd need about ten or fifteen of them though! I'm currently in the process of sorting out and tidying/dusting my studio- I'll post up a pic you'll see what I mean  lol

I have the same malware problem with the old links.

But I find this article in the DakkaDakka forum that seems to be the work station that you were talking about:

Hope this works.

Yay Verd! Keeping the flame alive! :-*

That's the piece, copied from Hyun's Wee Toy Soldiers. Wow, that was a great site, loaded with clever ideas and good advice.

Thank you very much for digging up a working link.

Go to the DakkaDakka (http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Build-Your-Own_Painting_Station) post....  It's the same article.  :)

Nothing we can do about Screaming Alpha's untended website... :?
