Title: Gauls- Aulerci Federation update Village 2/11/21
Post by: bluewillow on 15 May 2019, 12:35:55 PM
Gaulois Project

We have the fourth largest Gaulois Oppium (walled city) in France just a few kilometres from our Maison in Mayenne. Archeologists excavated a large amount of the city when the new motorway skirted the edge of it. Much of its twin ramparts still remain, the outer and the inner wall still have sections around 100m in length and about 3-5m high. Close by we also have the Roman city of Jublians, which capital of the Diablintes Post 60AD.

My Gaulois will focus on the Aulerci Federation, the  Diablintes tribe along with the Aulerci Cenomani (Le Mans) and Aulerci Eburovici (Évruex) tribes to make up the warbands of 30 bases.

I already have a few miniatures mostly crusader, old glory and some Warlord that make a small army which will be the Abrincatuii tribe, who stood with the Diablintes against Quintus Titurius Sabinus in 56BCE and against Titus Labienus in 52BCE.

I purchased three bags of Victrix naked Gauls and three bags of foot plus two cavalry bags, making around three hundred figures to paint.

The army will be based for impetus so I need about ten bases of infantry for each tribe, plus some skirmishers and a few bases of Cavalry, so eventually about four hundred figures to face Caesars Legions. So a lot to be done in the next 6-12 months

First off the desk are naked Celts completed a few weeks ago

Then some light cavalry this week

Wish me all the best

Cheers

All Gallic cavalry were noblemen cavalry, so function not armour sets them apart.

I think combing lime through the hair would have meant a single hair colour for everyone.

I think combing lime through the hair would have meant a single hair colour for everyone.

I did think about it but only one mention for lime washing, Diodorus Siculus is the only ancient source for this and he says:-
" The Gauls are tall of body, with rippling muscles, and white of skin, and their hair is blond, and not only naturally so, but they also make it their practice by artificial means to increase the distinguishing colour which nature has given it. 2 For they are always washing their hair in lime-water, and they pull it back from the forehead to the top of the head and back to the nape of the neck, with the result that their appearance is like that of Satyrs and Pans, since the treatment of their hair makes it so heavy and coarse that it differs in no respect from the mane of horses."

so not convinced totally from one description

The house is to tempt your partner to stay, the toy soldiers and the Oppidum are for us guys!

It truely is a sight to behold some of the inner wall still stand around 8m tall in some places

Another Gaulois unit off the desk!

This week I finished assembling almost 400 plastic figures in preparation for my Autumn and winter painting projects. Up next will be some clothed Gauls, not looking forward to the plaid!

Great work. Did you find any information about the Aulerci to distinguish them? Customs, organisation, preferred way of fighting etc?

Great work. Did you find any information about the Aulerci to distinguish them? Customs, organisation, preferred way of fighting etc?

A few pieces, they were head hunters as found in archeological digs. The organisation the Aulerci Diablintes tribe was part of the Aulerci federation which was made up of four main tribes. They seem to have predominantly worshiped water gods, used the river systems of the upper tributes of the  Loire for trade. They were major tin and copper miners and well known metal workers, particularly fine jewellery. They also seemed to have used swan feathers as plumes, as that was their nickname, and the root stem of their name. They used Chariots and mounted cavalry also, as it is commonly depicted on their coinage, so I suspect Nobles used both for warfare, they are noted earlier in the period for fighting naked except for cloaks. They do not seem to have been tattooed.

I will put together a comprehensive list and references on my blog in the coming weeks.

Cheers

Splendid paint jobs on these miniatures Matt...
I remember painting a load of plaid on some Jacobites I am sure it effected my mind....
I started dreaming about Tartan.... o_o o_o :o...

I do hope you are going to have a parade... or whatever the collective term for Gauls is.

All the best.   Aly

Thank you Aly,

It certainly “I am in the mood” to paint it consistency. There is no easy way around it.

I will pull them out for the birthday parade I think in March, although working on my Wargames room “the Salon de Guerre” and my table, perhaps for the grand opening later in March.

A update about the Gallic fortress 5 Klm from our Maison, I regularly walk along the Mayenne River below it so with the spring weather I decided to make it a morning and have taken some photos of the site.

The site is 135 hectares in total, although most of the remains are within the 14 hectare inner fortress.

Brown: the whole city site.
Red : inner and outer walls, up to 8m in some locations
Grey: 2011 archeological dig area 9klm long, later the motorway was built here.
White : current roads
Blue: Mayenne and L'Aaron rivers
Black: current property boundaries

A small report on the blog
https://stormandconquest.blogspot.com/2020/02/gaullic-oppidum-moulay.html (https://stormandconquest.blogspot.com/2020/02/gaullic-oppidum-moulay.html)

Next up more figures, then I will put together a small report on the museum.

Another unit completed over the weekend, the third of my clothed tribesmen. A few new combinations of plaid, pretty happy with my results on these Victrix miniatures. 46 figures to paint and I will of passed the 200 mark for the year of Gauls.

They will join my Aulerci Diablintes tribe and will be on the table in two weeks when we have a wargaming guest  one of our "walk the battlefield in the morning, Wargame in the afternoon" tours, visiting the Oppidum at Moulay, and the museum at Jublians, then wargaming in the completed "salon de Guerre ".

Hand painted shields, a mix of crusader, old glory, Warlord metals, and gripping beast, allied Gauls for my Romans!

Very nice indeed Matt. You must have hundreds of the buggers now. Where's the opposition?

I have a early republican completed of 26 bases of three legions plus two allied Italian legions of 9 vases and 6 bases of Gallic and German Auxillia, plus I have started putting together a plastic Caesarian which will be my Christmas focus project and a lot of unpainted Imperials, 300 odd foundry end of the first century Dacian wars figs.

Eventually I want to paint around another 130 Gallic figures to make it able to take on two Caesarian legions.

I mix it up A bit, anything that will accept large diorama basing for ease of movement for big armies. Impetus i gave to say is my favourite the ability for units, a command or whole armies to move across a table rapidly has lots of pluses particularly for cavalry or irregulars like the Gauls, well drilled troops stand as expected, but I also can play Hail Caesar or WAB even, I have purchased To the Strongest and ALDG but not played a games yet.

We have unique offerings to our customers, the ability to walk the battlefields then Wargame the battle so it adds a extra to our games, plus being able to bring your partner for a holiday in a rare noblemans L'Hotel Particular (basically a chateau in town with a large garden) in a historic city.

The goal is as long as Gauls or Romans are dying in droves and we both have fun nattering away, with beautifully painted figures on a outstanding table that is the ideal!

Cheers

Hmm... random thought, but as I re-perused this thread to steal some of Matt's painting ideas (  :D ), I remembered this Victrix offer and decided to lighten my wallet a bit... but I couldn't get the discount code to work, alas  ??? Judging by the angry posts on Facebook, it looks like I'm not the only one. I'll try it a few more times before it is set to expire (the 8th of Jan.), but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work; it's not like I need more figures, after all  lol

Lovely as always, Matt! I must admit, I've been putting off working on my Galatian unit because the thought of painting all the plaid is giving me anxiety  lol

It can get tedious, nearly 10 weeks to slog my way through this lot and another 20 coming up over the next few days as I complete basing.

Title: Re: Gallic Aulerci Federation Diablintes & Cénomani tribes update Chieftain 2/7/2021

A new addition to my Gallic army project my chieftain.

Camulogéne or Camulogenos was the Gaulois Chief of the Aulerci Federation during Caesar’s conquest of Gaul. He is thought to have lead the first raising of the confederation of the Aulerci (Diablintes, Cenomani and the Eburovices) to fight against the Roman invaders with the Unelli against Caesars Lieutenant Titurius Sabinus 56BC. The Aulerci also sent a army in 56BC to assist the Veneti in Caesars Loire campaign. Finally in 52BC the Aulerci joined Vercingetorix rebellion and Camulogéne lead the confederation with the Parisii against Caesars lieutenant Labienus at the battle of Lutetia, where the Gaulois Federation was defeated and Camulogéne was killed in the fighting.

Quite happy with my flesh tones although it lost a bit in the varnish process. The 28mm miniature is a converted Warlord Miniature Gallic Druid.
