Title: Survivors raiding a zombies town (Picture heavy report)
Post by: Braxandur on June 21, 2009, 11:35:49 AM
This report in spilt into several posting, to make it less heavy.

We had a special game last night. Bacause of my birthday I managed to invite quite some people and have a dead meat party. We started out with a nice BBQ, some desserts and a few beers. While I was cleaning up and doing the dishes (putting them in the dishwasher, my friends build up a gaming table for the 2nd part of the evening. A nice zombie game :)

First some shots of the table, taken with a not so steady hands. (must have been the caffeine)

The setup looked very good and was filled with a total of 104 zombies. We decided to play the game without a zombies player and try to move them together. The idea behind the game was the following.

A group of survivors shows up in the zombie infested town wit their cars/mobile homes/vans which had just ran out of fuel. Actually one of the reasons for going back into a zombie infested area was to get fuel. However, the towns power supply had to be restarted for the gas station to function.  However, the town also had a radio shack, which could be used to contact other survivors. In game terms, a helicopter could be brought onto the field if the shack was activated. Furthermore, there was a small Ammunation depot, where players could get better supplies.

We put all our survivors together and everyone was allowed to choose three. This made up a grand total of 18 survivors, armed mainly with close caombat weapons and pistols.

First the survivors showed up as one group:

You can clearly see that the zombies ar just "waking up"

Some other shots show the zombie distribution.

The survivors immediatly formed a perimiter
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/18.jpg)

The zombies however now became aware of them
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/19.jpg)

One group of survivors went into the relativly empty junkyard, which was located next to the gas station.

The junkyard is easily cleaned, but some noise is being heared from the other side of the fence that the survivors still have to cross

In the meanwhile, Mr Duke tells some zombies that nobody steals his chicks and lives!

The zombies are now on the move and all zombies within 50 cm were allowed to move towards the survivors.
The wooden fence appears quit usefull for keeping zombies at bay.

Duke however has no fence near him as a zombie shambles towards him and tries to bite him. Duke easily avoids the zombie

However he didn't notice that a second zombies was also moving towards him.

Where is Duke now? Right, Duke went down quite fast. maybe running around on your own is not so smart withlots of zombies nearby

The survivors in the junkyard just let the zombies climb over the fence and easily pick them off one at a time
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/27.jpg)

The streets near the setup are also getting emptier
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/28.jpg)

The other end of the town however still has a few "walking" dead shambling around.

Another group of survivors tries to take a short cut towards the radio shack. Their plan is to cross big open (basketball) field, which will gave them sight to all zombies, which should make it easier to forsee problems.

Wow that's nice!

What rules did you use?

They forget that if you can see the zombies, they can also see you...

Meanwhile the fence is being crossed and zombieparts start flying around
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/32.jpg)

More "dead meat" arrives
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/33.jpg)

The cunning open field plan backfires a bit, as zombies show up behind the survivors.

If only the way onto the filed was empty...

The Gastation is within easy reach. There are not that many zombies in plain view. Things might get easy
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/36.jpg)

The last survivores leave the vans behind and start moving towards ammunation and the power plant.

The "open field" plan backfires a bit more. The survivors haven't even reached the entrance to the field.

The zombies are nicely waiting (in lin) their turn to get slaughtered.

The last (really?) zombies near the gas station are being dealt with
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/40.jpg)

And the field is finally within reach due to some nifty shooting and hack 'n slash. (though there are even less survivors left)

The gas station doesn't appear to be working yet, but some noises are coming from the nearby buildings.

Ammunation has been cleaned out and some kevlar suits and better guns were found (assault rifles, a machine gun and a recoiless rifle)

This is a good thing, since the zombies now start pouring out of the buildings
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/43.jpg)

Same thing happens near the gas station
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/45.jpg)

One survivor found a hasmat suit (the lucky git)

The zombies are gone (for now) and the power plant has been turned on.

Fuel has cannisters have been filled.

One group of survivors manages to get back to the vans with just enough fuel to fill it up.

Here they are :) The priest on the ground just died due to being shot with a machine gun.  Honestly it was his own fault. he tried to make use of the mayhem and take out the depraved goth chick that he could not get along with. Allthough he shot het with a shotgun, her kevlar protected her and she had the bigger gun...

The radio shack is in sight, but what is that behind the glass doors?

More zombies come out to play
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Zombies/Birthday%202009/52.jpg)

Working together, the zombies are easily dispatched.

While waiting for the helicopter that is on it's way, the last of the "locals" get shot.

Another happy ending :)

All in all, we had a great game and a lot of fun. We used the rules from Combat Zone to keep everything easy and it worked very well. The zombie rules are (again) the rules that Pil has written and can be found in the combat zone chronicles.

What I also forgot to mention. As a present, they guys gave me the Mayhem MegaMall from Worldworks (and Mayhem industrial and mayhem bits) pdf's. An even more brilliant (though I suspect they also hope to benefit from it) they already printed a lot of the pdfs for me. Guys, you're great!!!!

Any chance of a rundown on what models you used for survivors?

The goth chick, the woman in green, and the lass in blue in the final few shots in particular?

That was brilliant. Thanks for posting. Yep a breakdown of survivors used would be great if possible?

Cool to see these. We had a real blast yesterday. The rules were simple, which worked very well for the amount of miniatures on the table.
A couple of the survivors were my models I brought along. Some shots:

Jenna Croft (or Lara Jameson):

The Major:

Ash:

Don't have shots of the other ones, but here are links to the manufacturers:

The convict in the jumpsuit was an old GW Fraternis Militia model with a Foundry MP5-K added.

Thanks for the kind remarks guys,

I'll try to get some better pictures of all the survivors.

I can at least tell you that the goth chick and girl in blue are from griffin miniatures and the the (bare ass) lady in green is from the fearless line of models from excalibur.

I can't seem to see to clearly from the pictures but how do excalibur minis match up to copplestone?
Title: Re: Survivors raiding a zombies town (Picture heavy report)
Post by: Braxandur on June 21, 2009, 09:26:03 PM
@dijit: they are a bit taller (2-3 mm max), but not really noticable. it can vary a lot though between sculpts

@Ironworker: there is one hotwheel car wash station on the table. it is the strange looking building with the orange girders on the side. My plan was to turn it into a small rocket launch facility, but it often works as well as high tech lab or power plant. There is also a fisher price garage on the table, and some cheap brand off which I don't even know how it's called.

He got too close, I actually 'killed' him off as I was rolling for the zombies attacking him  >:D

It was a very nice game, as for the survivor models:

The three Savages are converted from EM4 models:
http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/SAVAGES.html
The one with the chainsaw is 0031, the one with the big hair is 0026 and the one with the mask is 0024 with a head, weapon and arm swap.
(no pics of the other models yet I'm afraid)

The guy in the yellow suit is trooper 0019 in NBC suit:
http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/TROOPERS.html
(http://members.lycos.nl/Pil3/Miniatures/zombusters/zomb-1.jpg)

And the Duke is EM4 rebel 0076:
http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/REBELS.html
With a head swap from bodyguard 0035:
http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/STREET_PEOPLE.html
and green stuff shades.

We used the rules from Combat Zone to keep everything easy and it worked very well. The zombie rules are (again) the rules that Pil has written and can be found in the combat zone chronicles.

We used Combat Zone rules. Every survivor was a veteran with ablative/primitive armour (+1 Toughness), other than that they were armed with whatever they had their hands on. All pistols were heavy pistols, models without ranged weapon and models without CC weapons were assumed to have one heavy pistol and one knife (in addition to what they had). Shotguns were counted as auto-shotguns, chainsaws were counted as axes when used single-handedly (Ash) or as an axe and a knife when used with both hands (my chainsaw dude). Guns were rather limited, two models had autoshotguns and I believe one had an SMG (2D8 damage, Short range 20 cm and long range 70 cm, Rate of Fire 3). The zombies were using my "Zombies in the Zone rules":
http://www.combatzonechronicles.net/cozoxa/zomzone.htm

With new zombies appearing on every roll of 1 to hit. There was no zombie player (they just moved to the nearest target) and only zombies within 50cm of a model moved. Also, zombies that couldn't see anything or were in odd places (on top of buildings) didn't move unless provoked in some way.

In the armoury every model could spend a turn to stock up. Stocking up gave a model flak armour (+2 toughness instead of +1), and an assault rifle or combat shotgun. There were also one Machine gun and one Recoilless rifle for whoever got there first.

The game was immensely fun. The two things that made the game extra cool for me were:
1. the size of the table, an 8x4 table really gives you the sense that you can go anywhere you want.
2. the number of players. There were 6 players in the game and all had at least one survivor until the end of the game so there was a lot of interaction going on.

Love that massive pile of stuff on that Rambo-fellow's back.

He got too close, I actually 'killed' him off as I was rolling for the zombies attacking him  >:D

Technically, I suppose it was the zombies that were doing the biting lol . Well he lasted about as long as he does when I play as him on that "plug n' play" (?) difficulty.

The priest just started shooting, then of course the goth returned fire.

There were some grudges during the game, even though we were cooperating sometimes another player kills your men with zombies and you can't wait to repay the favour ;)

I would certainly hope so! I already started building the world works terain. The "Hollywood flats" are dead easy to build. (including cutting them out, 1 episode of  Earth Final Conflict for building one. Then again buikling one fire escape took me four episodes...

Building one is ready, number two will be done in a day or two
