Title: Ruined industrial/apocalyptic terrain
Post by: Cypher226 on 03 July 2019, 06:51:59 PM
Now I've finally figured out this Imgur business, I can start actually contributing to this forum again!

I've been working on a derelict industrial table (mainly for 40k/necromunda/kill team) on and off for a while, and I've now decided it's time to make it useful for other games, including This is Not A Test, SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1, and my work in progress Morrow Project/Twilight 2k skirmishes.

This is the ruined workshop from Tiny Terrain's first Chechnya kickstarter a couple of years back, based on a placemat. Anvil Industry guardsman for scale.

Next step will be to build up the rubble piles using Luke's APS modeling compound and grit it up.

Part two - thanks for the views  :D

I've now bulked out the rubble piles and started adding further details - a few bricks, some mangled metalwork etc. I also had some compound left over so quickly dug out a plaster ruin from an old Ral Partha range and based it up on some foamex, then blended it in;

Gravel, ballast etc to add next. I'll hopefully get to that tomorrow evening, when the modelling compound should be dry!

I like it.  The building looks good.

Thanks for the encouragement chaps!

I was hoping to make a bit more progress this evening but the modeling compound is still wet!

I've been rummaging through the supplies though and have found a nice sheet of corrugated card, which will make some panels for the roof.

Looks like a great start! When you say "modeling compound" what is that?

It's a bit like sculptamold - it's basically fine casting plaster mixed with shredded toilet paper (advanced papier machè, really), sold by Geek Gaming. I picked up a kilo to try out before deciding if I wanted to go to the effort of making my own.

Anyway, progress:

I've hit this one with a quick coat of poundshop grey car primer, then given it a wash of watercolour black. Then a vet quick couple of drybrushes of GW Celestra Grey to bring the details out.

I've done it in this order (not adding sand etc yet) as I've got a pack of the Geek Gaming 'base ready' wasteland basing material I want to try.

Got to run out to the shops, then I'll hit it up with some pva and basing and we'll see how it looks...

The basing needs a coat of scenic cement when it's dry, thaat should tone the colour down a bit, then I'll add a few tufts. I am debating if it needs a bit of colour somewhere, some grafitti or worn posters?

Looks great!

a torn/faded poster on the wall, and maybe something bright...empty drinks can...ammo box etc on the ground, just to break it up a bit?

Nice work.

And I agree with AKULA.

Very nice work! How big of an area do you plan on covering?

Really hoping to see more of your work

I
Digging through the stash I happened across a box of 1:48 stowage (tamiya jerry can set, to be exact). I think one or two in a nice bright rusty colour should set it off nicely. I've got to pull out the laptop in a min so will have a root through my folder of old posters as well.

Planning roughly 3' square. I've already got a lot of the storage tanks and pipelines etc done, I just need more in the way of linear cover.

(slight) further progress :

Added a coat of ready mixed filler out of a tube and dabbed at it to add a little surface texture. Hopefully this will also hide the joins. I appear to have misplaced the pieces to cover the tops of the columns, annoyingly.

Also threw a base coat on this:

Wasteland settler's cabin. One of Sarissa's French & Indian wars lot, iirc, with corrugated plastic for the roofing and a scotia grendal container at the side to modernise it a bit. No interior other than what's on the kit - there's not a lot of room inside!

Next up is to get a primer coat on the workshop and see what it needs in terms of detail painting. Aiming to get a couple of the intact industrial units from sarissa tomorrow at Barrage - and possibly a couple of retail units.

Ciao for now!

Good work.

Great idea for the settler's cabin.

I'm really on a roll here...

Popped down the M6 to Barrage this morning. Not a bad little show really. Didn't come away with as much Sarissa stuff as I planned - but probably for the best!

What did I come away with then?

A couple of sarissa bits - the oil tank will fit in nicely, and the billboard, well, you gotta have them for the apocalypse, right?

The little tubs are a few scatter items from a company I'd not seen before, Gatehouse Gaming. They look like a mix of straight up 3d printed and 3d printed and cast. At 3 packs for a tenner it was worth the gamble. The black pile will need the most work - the barrels will get a thick coat of Typhus Corrosion and be as rusty as possible. I'll likely incorporate these into a few larger pieces rather than use them stand-alone.

Since getting back I've added a couple of tiny details to the workshop and got a base coat down:

Don't worry, that red will be getting toned down a lot!

Those half buried barrels are awesome. I may have to get some of those. Nice little haul you got!

Nice stuff.

The barrels reminded me of the range of containers that Slug Industries offered: full containers, part buried, almost buried and fully buried. I think they did not charge post and packing on the latter.

I'm not dead  lol

I spent a week prevaricating about the roof truss on the workshop and painting stuff (more in my Sci Fi thread later....) I finally just bit the bullet and got the saw out, glued the trusses in, and added the column caps.

Finally ready for painting!

Quite happy with these as a set. Next up, the Sarissa storage tank I got at Barrage I think.

Thanks guys! I've not done any more yet as I've been feverishly working on Flames Of War and Team Yankee stuff, but hope to get back to this table this weekend!
