Title: "Doctor Who" Campaign Using "Black Tree Design" Miniatures
Post by: BlaxKleric on July 15, 2019, 03:56:42 PM
Over the weekend managed to play the first game of a "Doctor Who" campaign which has been in the works for a while. Probably take a few months to play through, especially if I can paint up a few more competing factions to add to the Cybermen, Nimon, Silurians, Great Intelligence, Sutekh, and Voord forces already competing.

Hopefully some of you will enjoy the updates as the battles are played through, and some additional forces are finished off.

The first confrontation, after a few turns of manoeuvring actually saw a raiding party of Sharaz Jek Androids attempt to establish a base on a world currently occupied by the Nimon. If successful this would create a seventh faction in our campaign.

With Sharaz Jek's Androids fighting the Nimon, I thought it was about time I painted up the mad masked man himself...

I haven't yet actually painted any "Black Tree Design" Daleks for our campaign, as we wanted it to focus upon some of the lesser known monsters. However, I am tempted to do a Robo-Man faction, perhaps lead by a Dalek or two. So as a start I've recently painted up the Black Dalek's pet Slyther :-)

Cool. I especially like your campaign map :)

What rules are you using for the battles?

Thanks Daeothar. We're using a homemade rule-set called M.I.S.S. which was predominantly written just so you can quickly put miniatures on a table and start rolling dice. I've done a load of BatReps on my blog using it :-)

One of main factions we're currently using are the Silurians, so I thought those interested might like a look at the force as it currently stands...

Whilst I don't currently own any figures which could currently allow for a Peladon 'pure' faction, I did think that for a future campaign we could have Aggedor form part of a Galactic Federation Ice Warriors force...

One of the alien races which currently haven't yet been utilised in our campaign are the Mandrels from the planet Eden, as Sharaz Jek's Androids were chosen over this humanoid species to attack the Nimon during Turn Five. Hopefully however, the extra-terrestrials will still get a chance to appear in Turn Ten, when we'll once again give a previously unselected faction a chance to establish themselves on the campaign map.

Disappointingly, "Black Tree Design" don't seem to have produced any actual Marb Station workers, so I doubt we'll end up doing a Ravalox faction for our campaign. However, they did make a superb Drathro miniature, which I thought would be a shame not to paint.  :)

Plus I've added another two more Sharaz Jek Androids to our Androzani Minor faction taking it up to ten robots, plus their masked mastermind himself.  ;)

One of the aliens factions I'm hoping to bring to the tabletop at some point soon, are the Sontarans. "Black Tree Design" do a number of interesting sculpts of the clone warrior race, and despite not owning enough yet to field a legitimately sized force I've painted Group Marshal Stike.

I have managed to play another battle in my ongoing “Doctor Who” campaign exclusively using just my collection of “Black Tree Design” miniatures. This particular confrontation involved the somewhat beleaguered Nimon desperately trying to hold on to a second of their Empire’s ruined planets from a Silurian incursion. Fought across a 2’ x 3’ dilapidated cityscape, the game initially saw the defending alien Minotaurs’ taking a firm grip of the action by seizing a couple of crucial strategic objectives and seemingly pinning their opponents back with a notable flurry of Psionic mind beams.

However, once the Myrka managed its way to the tabletop’s centre things took a dramatic turn for the worse for the “parasitic species that operated on a galactic scale”, as their shooting attacks ineffectively bounced off of the reptilian creature’s “thick, rubbery skin”, and a somewhat impulsive charge straight into the Silurian’s numerically superior left flank failed due to its over-reliance upon the minotaurs’ bulk protecting them in close combat. Admittedly, by the end of the conflict the Nimon hadn’t been as badly mauled by the race of Earth Reptiles and their four-legged “heavy backup” as they had previously by Sharaz Jek’s Androids, but they still had disappointingly lost a second territory within the space of just a couple of campaign turns…

Unfortunately, one of the monsters "Black Tree Design" don't do are the Yeti from "Web Of Fear", whihc were armed with Web-guns. To get around this, and not have to convert one of the different-looking Yeti from "The Abominable Snowmen", I've decided to distinguish the armed Yeti in my Great Intelligence faction by simply painting them grey.

I have played another battle in my ongoing “Doctor Who” campaign exclusively using just my collection of “Black Tree Design” miniatures and some home-made rules. This conflict saw the Great Intelligence launch an attack upon the Voord on a frozen planet and resulted in some serious close combat scraps. Fought across a 2’ x 3’ rock-infested landscape, with a pair of freezing lakes partially separating the two factions, the game initially saw the flipper-footed Voord using their quicker speed and "Water-Walk" ability to seize the initiative.

Yet it soon became clear that the robot Yetis' armoured fur covering, and single Web-gun, was going to make them incredibly hard to shift once they got themselves into a significant victory-point winning position. Admittedly, the Voord were both lead by the commanding presence of Yartek, which  permitted any friendly unit within 12 inches to re-roll a single dice roll once per turn, and armed with knives. But it took a lot of effort to take down just one of the Great Intelligence's shaggy minions, whereas the Yeti soon started chopping down the Voord with great clubbing swings of their claws.

Increasingly low on the numbers needed to fell their opponents, Yartek's faction soon lost control of the space between the two frozen lakes at the centre of the battlefield, and before long were pushed further and further back from their goals. In the end, the sheer physicality of the Yeti saw the Great Intelligence achieving twelve victory points to the Voord's one point, providing the mysterious disembodied entity with a foothold upon Yartek's fast-dwindling empire...

Nice work, I love the Dr Who universe and I've often wanted to collect black Tree's models. Do you know if they (or anyone else) intends to create models for the newer Doctor and their enemies? I'd really like to see the weeping angels, and a lot more besides.

They are.  Very strangely, they made them non-compatible with all of their own lines of historical figures and bypassed every opportunity to do cross-over scenarios with all of them.

Maybe this proves once again that there is no cure for stupid?

Or maybe they figured that they would only sell Dr Who specific figures because everyone would substitute other figures for the general stuff? So they made them a different scale so you 'needed' to buy what they made to be compatible?

I'm going for option A .

My imression is that Warlord sculpt their Doctor Who miniatures from scanned photographs and thereby get the proportions very well, yet rather boring/static poses of the actors. The heads and hands are very small compared to what we wargamers are used to from other miniature lines. These body parts would even be smaller, if the models would match the size (I avoid the term SCALE) of other 28mm miniatures. However the non-human models may match any 28mm ranges, I think. Some of them might even benefit of being taller, like the SILENCE or the bulkier Cybermen.

One thing to note is that they share scale (and sculpts) with a boardgame from a different manufacturer.

The boardgame currently slips my memory.

Managed to paint some additional Silurians for my Earth Reptile faction...

And play-test a few faction rules I've been wanting to add to the various extra-terrestrial races currently vying for universal domination in our ongoing “Doctor Who” campaign.

Our first battle involved the Nimon fighting the Great Intelligence and a gaggle of its robot yeti. Fought across a 2' x 3' debris-inspired tabletop populated with a couple of forests, a pair of pools, and some small futuristic buildings, the confrontation ultimately ended in a tightly-fought draw, but gave us the opportunity to utilise the Nimon’s (new) ability to siphon off part of their opponents’ health (or rather energy in this case) so as to regenerate some of their own.

In sharp contrast the second conflict between Sutekh’s mummies and the Silurians ended in a complete massacre, with the Osiran’s ‘once a game’ ability to bring Sutekh’s “Gift of Death” to a single wounded enemy model (regardless of whether it had any remaining health left) felling the mighty Myrka very early on. This devastating loss enabled the robot mummies to fearlessly close in upon the Silurians knowing they had a distinct advantage when fighting them hand-to-hand, and soon the tabletop was littered with dead reptiles…

Nice!! The Autons were very sinister looking villians. :)

Thanks very much indeed, Jambo1. It made a nice change not having to pick out the eyes :-)

Thought I'd add a couple more Monoids to my mix, so as to give me enough for a five-figure faction (the minimum size for our campaign's games). These were actually feebies from "Black Tree Design" as a result of delays with my most recent order.

Plus I'm working on a trio of armed Krotons so I can bring that crystalline race to the table top too.
