Their are mercenaries FFS, they will fight for anyone who pays them.

Your comments never cease to make me smile, just because you are Russian, you think it gives you a monopoly to criticize any posts which relate to your country. If you can't say something positive, please keep comments to yourself, as I am not interested.

The first Russian private military company appeared in 2013. It was registered in Hong Kong (Russian laws prohibited such formations). She was engaged in the protection of ships from Somali pirates and military training.
So in the Chechen wars (1994-96, 1999-2001) there could be no mercenaries on the Russian side. There were contractors, i.e. people who were formally accepted into the service of the Russian armed forces. They did not have any special units and served in regular military units.

How easy it is to judge what you don’t know)))

Careful now re: stones and glass houses.

I think Cuprum, as any member, is entitled to point out, in a conductive fashion, any factual issues (I won't say errors given that I take this project to be at least to some extent fictionalized), but please remember all that Chechnya as per the board rules is a limited subject. Also, do refrain from any (implied) personal attacks, period.

I am curious about scenarios for this conflict. Are you using some reference work to create or recreate scenarios or just winging it? If winging it are you intimately familiar with the conflict or just using scenarios of a generic nature? I ask as the conflict interests me but I have no real knowledge of it at all and might want to try actions from it (like I need another period to distract me!) and am curious for ideas where to start. I prefer my scenarios to be typical of the actions which may have taken place as opposed to actions which I like with a veneer of period added. Thank you.

If others know a good source for an overview which may lead to scenarios please chime in (the Osprey book, a web site, board game or other book or magazine or perhaps and actual scenario publication).

Caprum has sniped at me on several of my threads (not just this one), as a result, I think my response was both appropriate and proportionate.

My comments on this forum are always positive about other people's work. I would never dream of publicly criticising someone's else hobby. If I don't like something, then I would rather not comment. It's a simple but courteous tactic, but one which reduces the risk of me offending any of the good people on this forum. Maybe our Russian friend would do well to adopt a similar approach.

All I have done to date buddy, is use snippets of information taken from news coverage and then tried to weave it into a playable wargame scenario, I am certainly not trying to portray a 100% "accurate" recreation of an engagement.

Sorry for my ignorance. Since getting back into gaming a few years ago I have found new interests such as the Soviet Afghan war. I assume Chechnya is similar in being an asymmetric war but I don't know if the rebels had the support of the population like the Mujahideen did, and the associated abilities. Or if not how that might be reflected in game terms. Also it appears from the images I have seen (not done any reading yet) the "wolves" had more access to Russian heavy equipment. Was this very rare, for propaganda purposes almost exclusively, or did they have access to captured equipment or did forces previously belonging to the Russians turn and bring amounts of equipment with them? Were these employed piecemeal or in strength?

These are the kinds of questions I have which would shape the scenarios created. Thank you for your reply.

You might be overthinking it mate, wargame scenarios just need to be fun for both players and carry a flavour for the conflict you are fighting, IMHO the fine details of history don't really matter when playing a toy soldier game.

Oh I agree but let's face it certain types of scenarios would be completely out of line without some knowledge of the conflict. For example you won't see large scale tank duels, unless I totally don't know this war. Thank you for your replies.

The Chechens did have limited access to tanks (there is an orbat on the web), so in a Bolt Action skirmish level game, a small armoured engagement is not out of place.

I have a few favourite Gamers who when I see one of their threads, either new or updated I immediately have a look... usually I save the pictures and make notes etc. Lord Raglan you have really crashed into the Hall of Fame. Your work is first class, original and there is always something that makes me go WOW! The 3d printed subway entrance... the tank or the buildings on this thread...

Anyway thank you for sharing it is always good to see your work along with Tin Shed, Captain Blood etc and I am also glad that you keep a healthy perspective that we are gaming and not simulating combat.. oh and not getting too hung up on what shade of purple a shirt should be. I am sure I am not alone but during my service I cannot recall gazing at a uniform and thinking "that brown is a bit off", come to think of it I cant remember the exact shade of any of the colours even now sat at home!

This is a 1/50 scale 3D print off a guy on eBay, unfortunately, I can't recommend it, as it took loads of work to get it looking reasonable. The backend was the worst, I had to put boxes and some camo netting to cover the misprinted sections.

I know what that's like, bought a 1/56 LVTP-5 FDM print (!), ended up covering most of the top with 'sand bags' & boxes. Never again...

2nd Chechen War Battle Report - The Russian Stranglehold. By mid-January 2000, the Russian army had begun an advance on central Grozny from 3 directions. With their ammunition   running low and their losses mounting, the Chechens were desperate to hold on to the city’s tramline.

The Russian opening moves saw HIND Attack Helicopters attempting to neutralise the armoured threats located around the tram station, whilst ground troops advanced quickly on the position. A brave Chechen BRDM driver gunned his machine into a blocking position on the bridge.

The Chechens reacted quickly to the attack from the air, pouring small arms fire at the HIND, but not before it destroyed a T-55 and some of its supporting infantry. A Russian transport helicopter also arrived, deploying a unit of Spetsnaz, 100m to the South of the tram station.

Intense firefights were now breaking out at both ends of the tramline, whilst the Spetsnaz advanced on the position under the cover smoke. Two Wolf Packs quickly manoeuvred into position to lay down fire on the Spetsnaz from two directions, killing the lead Russian with AK fire.

Some Chechen Fighters broke cover, advancing across the tramline to take up better firing positions on the approaching Russians. Additionally, the Chechens received reinforcements in the shape of a fully loaded BMP-2, which immediately opened fire on targets across the river.

Everything was converging on the tramline now. Despite heavy losses on both sides, the fighting was bitter and intense. A Russian grenade launcher team laid accurate fire on the signal box, killing four Chechens in the process.

The fight for control of the tramline intensified, with Russian armour blazing away with greater efficiency, killing the Chechen local commander, as he crossed the line in support of his troops. In response, the Chechens blunted the attack with effective RPG and MG fire.

As darkness fell, the Chechen Fighters were stalwart in the defence of their homeland and despite losing their commander, they continued to control both ends of the tramline and its subway system which provided a vital supply line for ammunition and food to the frontline.

Many thanks to @RobJonesHistory for making the trip to ShedHQ, a much improved performance in commanding the orc invaders. This scenario absolutely went to the wire and the Chechens narrowly avoided losing control of the supply line. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did Rob, cheers 👍🏻

Great looking models and terrain!

Having been fortunate to see the table in person I can honestly say that the photos (as good as they are) don’t do it justice  :-* :-* :-*

I see you have a James Bond Goldeneye T-55.
I love those tanks.
I have a number of them.
If I need a Russian looking tank, I use one.
They really look cool.

I do now have 2 of those James Bond T55s, as well as 2 bog-standard diecast T55s....

My local hobby store has Russian 1/43 diecast BTR60s, BRMD2s, ASU100s, and big AT guns (at reasonable prices).  They are Russian in terms of what they portray (well, Soviet, technically), nd Russian in terms of manufacture and packaging.  One of these days, I may take a figure up to check relative scale, and maybe pick up a few...

What make is the AT gun Jim, I’m always on the lookout for artillery?

It's a BS-3.  And I was thinking about using it as a stand-in artillery piece, instead of as an AT gun, as well...

When I go there next (particularly if I buy some), I'll post pics...
