Foundry have an X-mas sale on now, which might offset some of the cost. I think it's 10% off all orders, 20% off orders over £125 and 25% off orders over £250.

You need a code for the discount but it's available to everyone and is on the WF homepage.

A local City Cop, a Sikh, with headwear and all on duty, gave me a WARNING for 65 in a 30 (mph).   :o

Then he volunteered for charity projects I run ( doesnt know I was the Ben Hur he pulled over)

Gonna try to put a Sikh head on a modern cop figure, paint 'em and anonamously give him.   Also means I might as well order enough Sikhs to make a TSATF unit for my Colonial games.

Gonna copy your work  :)

Do it!

I still remember the awesome 28mm aircraft carier you did for VBCW my friend.

Most of the stuff for this project is multi use to some degree. Vast majority of troops (including the Sikhs I have just found out) can be used for the 1st Afghan War and many can also be used for Indian Mutiny

Lookign forward to adding a horde of plastic Afghans to represent the Muslim irregulars that fought for both sides in the Punjab.
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: AKULA on 12 January 2020, 10:30:42 AM
Thank you for remembering the aircraft carrier...one of my more loony projects  :D

Indian Mutiny in 28mm has been on my todo list for years...I had a 15mm project when the Dixon range first came out...long since sold off.

The combination of beautifully painted figures on LAF and the wide choice of poses from Iron Duke & Mutineer Miniatures especially is pushing me in that direction...just mindful of having too many projects on the go at the same time...I know that it’s one of those subjects that would easily get out of hand once I start.

{edit} Just seen the photos of the Perry Afghan plastics...and that got me wondering about the Gripping Beast Arab Light cavalry I’ve been using for my Game Of Thrones project.....oh damn.... lol

Ditto all of the above! I've got hundreds of Iron Duke Indian Mutiny mini's and have literally only painted up six! Neil's Bluecaps to be precise.

I'm gagging to get into working on them but, like most of us, I have way too much on the go. I'm already thinking three major projects in advance and unfortunately none of these include an IM project as of yet :(

Post by: ARKOUDAKI on 12 January 2020, 01:13:30 PM
I also love the look of Mike Snook's Iron Duke Indian Mutiny range but have been holding off for years now, as I just have too many other projects that I just can't justify/rationalize moving away from my Foundry/OG Indian Mutiny collection. One day for sure, as Mike's range is well researched, well executed by Paul Hicks, and the Mutiny is just a great period!
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: Rogerc on 12 January 2020, 07:50:02 PM
I find that Mikes figures actually mix really well with the Foundry stuff. Photos to follow when I base up the Sepoy's in Dhotti but a mix of Iron Duke, Foundry Indian Mutiny and Foundry Sikh Wars works surprisingly well.

For me the beauty of Indian Mutiny is that it lends itslef to Sharp Practice so well. Thirty figures per side is plenty for a game.
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: AKULA on 14 January 2020, 08:20:33 PM
That opens up a whole new bunch of possibilities...I’d discounted the Foundry range as perhaps too small. Definitely interested to see some photos of the two ranges together.

I saw that and went "Hurray.....oh bugger my wallet!"

Akula the ID and Foundry stuff look exactly the same scale, Paul Hicks tends to sculpt on the smaller side of 28mm so they fit really well together.

That's good to know.

I used to have a lot of Michael's old Foundry Sikh War range when it came out and they where amazing. Never did find a set of rules that gave the game I wanted back then though.

Hmmmmm..... that's a very good point, on a regimental level, in 28mm, what rules to actually use?

Black Powder wrk well simply as they are so easy to mess around with until you find what works, givign the British Crack and Steady and the Sikhs Tough fighters etc. My chum Steve is keen to try field of battle which I know OB also uses.

Post by: Arthur on 15 January 2020, 11:14:47 PM
The upcoming Iron Duke range should give the period a welcome shot in the arm, as there have been few new Sikh Wars sculpts on the market since the 1990's.

I originally had high hopes for the Studio Miniatures range but that one quickly petered out and looks pretty much dead in the water now - it's nowhere near complete and I doubt it will be added to in the future. Then there was the stillborn Musketeer range Bill Thornhill briefly worked on some seven or eight years ago during his pre-Footsore days : a few greens were previewed but nothing came out of it and the figures were never released commercially. The 25 + year old Foundry still holds up rather well (I'm still very fond of it and I think the sculpts remain largely on par with most of what's on the market today despite their being 26 mil  rather than 28) and I have no intention of starting again and parting with the very large number of Foundry miniatures I already own, but I'll be following the Iron Duke rang's progress very closely and may well invest in a few units.

Which reminds me I'd better put the Studio Miniatures Mk.1 figures I bought during their Kickstarter on sale in the Bazaar of Obscurities as I'm unlikely to do anything with them now.

Post by: Rogerc on 15 January 2020, 11:46:19 PM
I am with you there Arthur, I had high hopes for Studio too, the Kickstarter stuff was really quite nice but the majority of subsequent relases were poor and were then withdrawn. I have 3 battalions of Sikh regulard which are nice fgures I will probably keep, I also have a British battalion which is nice, the Sikh gunners hold up well, the British gunners are just odd, with two absolutely lovely figures on that is poor and one that is awful, still I painted abttery and I am unlikely to part with it.

The Plastics from Perry's added to the Foundry I have and the Iron Duke releases should make for a really nice mix (I hope)

16th Bengal Native Infantry. Came out OK! Mix of Iron Duke and Foundry pictures on the blog

https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2020/02/16th-bengal-native-infantry-for-sikh.html

Akula was keen to see how Foundry and Iron Duke Mix, the British Officer and Indian officer are both Warhgames Foundry Sikh Wars figures. The Figures behind and the the left of the Indian officer are Iron Duke, the one diagnonally behind the Indian officer and next to the British officer are old Foundry Mutiny range and both standard bearers are Iron Duke. Hope that helps a bit, I feel they all mix really well.

The current yellow looks nice. Your previous yellows are brighter and stand out more (tactical advantage, concentrate on those infantry and not on the cavalry that is about to charge).
The unrelenting sun has no mercy for the dyes these warriors wear.

Arthur one of the Guns is by Indus miniatures with the Tiger barrel mouth, the other squater one I cant remember but I will check. I do have another Tiger mouthed one which is nice by Victoirous miniatures from their Taiping/Boxer range, although my chum Chris who bought it has ruined it for me by pointing out the Tiger looks more like Tintins dog snowie!

Hmmmm.
Not loving these at first sight, but thanks for the review, Roger - it’s informative.
A couple of the bodies look a little bit off to me, and some of the arms don’t seem to sit quite right.
Also, only five different figures in the set for £30? 8 identical sprues? It’s the cheap and cheerful Gripping Beast plastics approach. (Except they aren’t cheap).

If I wasn’t expecting the Perry Afghans, I guess these might be worth a dabble, but as it is...

The Perry Afghans will likely have around 12-14 different figures (if their previous colonial sets are anything to go by), many more arms / weapons / head options, will be infinitely better models, and will only cost £20 per box for the same number of figures...

On the whole, I think I’ll wait ;)

The price for the Wargames Atlantic miniatures is £25 (more discounts if you buy more and free shipping) so a bit more expensive than the Perry sets.

Buy 3 Boxes for $95/£70
Buy 5 Boxes for $145/£105
Buy 10 Boxes for $265/£190

But you're right about the number of limited poses but think these will also prove interesting for a whole range of other settings with some converting.

The Perry's always set the bar very high but yes also very excited to see their new set. :)

Post by: Rogerc on 06 June 2020, 12:37:08 AM
All fair points gentlemen. I have to be fair to Wargames Atlantic, part of why these look not so great is my modellign and choice of arms and weapon mixes for the bodies, they are however very short of the Perry standard. I have built another sprue I will share when they are finished soem are quite a bit better others less so. I have added a Sikh turbaned head to one which looks nice.

If I had seen them up close I might have just waited for the Perry ones (which I will still get) then again maybe I would have got them anyway. I will stick with them and they will be mixed in with Perry metal and plastic on the bases, taken as a whole on multi based units I think they will look OK.

In terms of cost you can get them for £25 in the UK (I just paid too much at £30) so thats £0.62 a figure, Perrys will be a box of 34 I thinkwhich is £0.59 great value for a nicer figure with, as Captain Blood points out, more than twice the choice of bodies. I completely get people will wait for Perry's, meanwhile I will continue to try get the best out of what I have bought.

Thanks for the review, and your build photos, but it just reinforces what I saw in the earlier info on this release. As I say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if you like these then go for them. However, they definitely aren't for me...and that would be the case even if Michael Perry hadn't done a box of plastics.
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: Rogerc on 26 June 2020, 10:53:51 PM
I saw that th Perry Afghans are comign in August so I will definately get a box of those too. I will probably paint all these Wargames Atlantic figures and then pick through which I want to keep and which I will part with.
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: Rogerc on 27 June 2020, 02:55:56 PM
So with the news that Foundry are releasing their Afghans in August and a bunch of metal Afghans coming in the post I have pretty much decided my plan of action.

I will of course buy at least one box of Perrys, build and paint them.

I will finish off the Wargames Atlantic ones.

My metaisl include a bunch of Studio miniatures afghans, quite nice but not as nice as Perrys, so plan is:

Build and paint the whole lot and only when they are all finished decide what I will keep and base, which fit together and which dont, so which can be mixed in units and then anythign I dont like can be sold on ebay as painted figures that will give me anywhere up to 200 afghans (Muslim Tribal irregulars as they wont actually be Afghans) thats 10 units , if I end up partign with 20 orven more it wont be a hardship. The heads, arms etc for the two lots of plastics may or may not be interchangable, I have a bunch of Sikh plastic heads but may get more so I can have at least 2 more battalions of Sikh irregulars.

Plenty to keep me busy.

Meanwhile I am working through the next battalion of Sepoys and the next one of Sikh regulars.

Love seeing all your progress on this project.

One point, your Sikh Regular flag is totally inaccurate, as the regs only carried one primary standard (aside from the French Legion which carried another type). The British/HEIC captured quite a few of these during the war, along with loads of artillery, and brought them back to England as war trophies. Sadly today there are only a few left in good condition, and they are all in private hands. I have attached a couple of photos of the standard 'Raj's Colors' used by the Khalsa Raj regulars that were displayed by Christies' auctions. If you live near Lichfield Cathedral, they use to have two (2) of the 'Raj's Colors' on displayed, along with a black Akali flag. However, last I heard they were down for restoration, as they were falling apart.

FYI I have done extensive research on Sikh flags as part of my book project...so I do know all about this. :) Hopefully one day I will time enough to get the darn book all written up and out for publication. Perhaps during the next global pandemic!  lol

Hope this info helps.

Keep up the great work on this project Roger!

Hi Arkoudaki, thank you very much for that, its news to me to be honest. I have typically been using commercially available flags, my initial plan had been to use the virtual arm chair general sheets which have flgs broken down by brigade and are very nice.

So just to be clear you are sayign that for the regulars they all had a single flag exacly the same, much like British units if they only had the Kings colour?

If so its disapointing to find manufacturers not producign this. Studio Miniatures do a range of Sikh flags which include a couple looking liek this but are in a sheets of two where the second one would have to be discarded.

I know some Rajas had their own regular unifromed infantry regiments I assume these would have different flags?

This may need some thinkign about I feel. My next post is to be a review of the collection so far so apologies in advance the incorrect flags will need to be ignored for now.
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: ARKOUDAKI on 19 July 2020, 04:05:38 PM
Yes, all the regular Khalsa Raj units used the 'Raj/King's color' shown above. The exception was the French Legion, which used their own flag alongside the King's standard. The Akali used a black flag. The irregulars used a variety of things.

As for Studio Minis, I did try to work with them to get their flags correct but sadly they just weren't interested in accuracy, and didn't bother to do proper research and didn't pay attention to the info I provided to them.

As for Armchair General's flags, they are also completely made-up, and lacking any historical accuracy. In fact, many of them are more akin to Afghan standards than Sikh ones.

As for getting some proper flags done, I have been after Grahame at GMB for a long time to do this but he just doesn't have the time. GMB still makes the best flags on the market.

FYI, I will eventually commission a range from someone competent enough to do the artwork and pay attention to the research...but not sure when I will get around to this. Also working on making accurate 3D renders of the Sikh artillery.

If you have any further questions, feel free to IM me. :)

Like I said, enjoying your work so keep going! And don't worry too much about the flags, as if you like them then go for it.

Thinking a couple of this sheet might be my nearest option without wasting any flags.

Well I hate to burst your bubble but these flags are the wrong size and shape and the pattern is incorrect. The top one is close to the actual pattern but has a number of problems. The one on the bottom is just made-up colors that never were used by the Sikhs. Best to just wait for some proper flags or make your own.

The figure in the second flag, is that Kali?

Extremely unlikely if the image is that of a Sikh banner. The One God as characterized bu Guru Nanak being the monotheistic Sikh deity .
Title: Re: Sikh Workbench
Post by: OB on 20 July 2020, 10:55:50 AM
Yes, I know.  Yet Kali did appear on some Sikh flags.  Or at least so we are told. Hence my question.

OK so whilst I want as much accuracy as possible putting flags off in definately untl correct ones are available isnt really an option i am happy with. If the top flag is near enough I can amend the bottom one with some yellow paint on the lines and detail.

Probably a good decision mate as they might be colourless for a ling time and if push comes to shove you can always remove the flag and replace it with a ore accurate one if they are ever avalable.

Facing the same dilemma in 15mm I've decided to wait until the correct flags become available.  Until then my Khalsa battalions will carry the flags they have.  If the correct flags appear I'll replace them.

IS that a long answer to a short question?

Nope. A very satisfactory one  8)

So, a mix of daylight and the lighting has done the trick.  8)

I'm just wondering if a couple of low cost daylight rigs might be an alternative? Not that there's anything wrong with your pics, far from it.

Yeah, six and two threes basically.

I do need to buy a light box. I always curse myself for not buying one every time it comes to take some pics but never seemingly never to get the point of actually buying/making  o_o

Excellent figures and wonderful painting.  I do love the mix of figures in the unit as it widens the poses to make a much more irregular look.  Well done.  :-* :-*

Thank you very much for the feedbakc guys I really appreciate it. Hu Rhu, most of the command bases are a single mounted figure but not all. I have a Senior command base with 4 officers and a couple of bases to do that have orderlies. One of the next ones I plan is a Lancer Officer for the British with a bugler riding at his side.

Post by: Rogerc on 26 July 2021, 10:16:42 PM
Cheers Hu Rhu, I think about 10 battalions of British/Indian and 7 regiments of horse so thats around 270 plus the gunners and generals so maybe 300 the Sikhs I reckon 8 battalions of regulars 10 of irregulars and at least 10 of horse, so over 400. Another 100 in the painted box and 50 or more waiting to be based so maybe as many as 800 painted and maybe 300 plus still to paint?

Lots is a quicker answer.
