Well,in again. Good fun,and good luck everyone :)
-
I can already envisage this and it's cool 8)
-
Looking forward to this 8)
-
Look forward to seeing your build - is it for an existing project, or the start of a whole new one?
:)
-
New one, though it should fit with all my other stuff, such as BSC2019 wood :). I have had a vaguely clever idea to incorporate elements of the last two build something competitions I’ve been in,ie water and vegetation,in a suitably ruined way, possibly a bridge; the thinking is half the battle ...
-
Something I did years ago for a Runequest campaign, it will be much titavated...

-
Or I could go all Gothic, image by Blake Rottinger;

-
This seems a topic well suited to your patented dark moody photography. I am looking forward to seeing how this developes (bad pun intentional :D)
-
lol Lon,and thanks for the confidence :)
In my search for inspiration and information, basically I’ll have to recreate a tower, using foam instead of ashlar on a smaller scale, fascinating really.
-
I think I prefer the first one with the atmosphere of the second :)
-
I think I prefer the first one with the atmosphere of the second :)
That’s what my wife said :)
-
Go you good thing.
-
I've just realised, that it will probably end up a bit like Glastonbury Tor circa 850... ;D
-
Ooooh... This will be a top contender. Your super detailing make your entries pop
-
Haha, too much confidence mate,we've got a big BSC,it will be jolly interesting :D
-
I will be happy if your build and your place remains unscorched. Stay safe!
-
Thanks Lon, I appreciate it.
-
I’ve realised how bloody hard it is using foam bricks to build a tower, kudos to Jim,Pedr, and others :) I’m just not neat enough, may have to go for a sculpted tower, which is disappointing.
Any tips fellow builders?
-
Try plaster bricks. A lot fussier to do the basic assembly but easier to carve and sand after.
-
Thanks Steve :)
-
Plaster masonry breaks up very realistically.
-
Plaster masonry breaks up very realistically.
As I’m doing a round tower, how do you get the curvature without gaps? I’m assuming the stone was dressed or selected with a curvature.
-
You build it with plaster oblong blocks then sand off the sharp edges. I made an Afghan round tower like that. :)
-
foam bricks are the way to go
easy to work with
-
Thanks fellas :)
Had somewhat of an epiphany; realistically I'm not neat*enough to do a stone tower justice, even if it is a ruin,so I'm going down the High Fantasy route.
Watch this space ;D
* I tend to do everything by eye...
-
Looking pretty ordinary, another level, and a tree ;)

Guy,
You have plenty of time. Don't stress, have a beer lol

Guy,

Lon
lol yep, transposing the all the ideas from my sketches, and brain, trying to make it all work. That's the trouble ;D
Basically the idea is a tower on a hill, partially ruined by a tree, ivy et cetera. The tower will overlook a pond with some sort of bridge or jetty, I'm aiming for knight meets strange lady, very Mallory though more 16th century, phew!
-
nice start
-
Cheers Tom,we shall see...
-
Here's a root ball(from some sort of Acer:
Eventually going to be the tree,in addition it has lots of lovely bits for terrain.
-
Sketch at work; probably the final design.
The fun thing is once completing the tower, deconstructing it with a tree growing out the side.
-
Nice and moody
-
First fill,test piece really...
-
And the door is just temporary lol
-
Is the tower going to be destroyed buy the tree growing or is it a destroyed tower with a tree growing in it?
Not sure if it matters but the aesthetic would probably be different between the two i.e tree growing by pushing the whole stone to one side or the tree growing through the centre of a damaged stone?
I am not sure if I am making sense?
-
;D Haha, the tree will next to the tower, branches and roots will be doing the destroying, creating the ruin,I intend at least one branch to have knocked down a wall. Ivy and so forth will add to the ruinous/abandoned feel decay.
Hope that helps?

Sounds perfect to me :)
-
the test piece looks very good!
-
Liking this very much so far. ;D
-
I like the idea of destructive ivy 8)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Well the tower is complete, bar fiddling, and it looks ery Grimm's fairytales. I'll put some pics up tonight.
Now for an massive tree, terrain tile, bridge and a troll, did I say troll...?
-
Bit of work to go...
-
:-* Wow ! Looking great
-
I’m liking that mate 8)
-
That’s going to be a bit special when everything is painted
8)

Oh I hope so lol I always make too much work for myself.
Been looking at Ian McQue drawings,a major inspiration for this build.
Thanks chaps :)
-
Always on the lookout for interesting roots...
-
Aces! :-*
-
Great rootball. Nature always makes it better than we can sculpt!
-
Amazing progress Blackwolf. What did you use for the daub on the walls?
-
Excellent progress so far. Looking forward to see what you do with that root and how you will combine it with the tower. 8)
-
Sorry for the late reply, been a little out of action...
Paul I’all post up the half finished tree tomorrow, hopefully what I have in my head will work...
Thanks Codsticker,it’s a combination of plastic wood and Vallejo plastic putty, carefully Dremelled...
And Damas,yep can’t beat nature :)
Thanks fellas :)
-
A little update,Frankenstein's tree...
-
And a very poor WIP,it's huge! Branches et cetera will be poking through...
Now for a hill,pond,and bridge.
-
This is turning into something particularly good!
-
Just a little update; the terrain tile, stream cut et cetera, v. rough ;D
(https://myalbum.com/photo/MAYK9zkYdgmR/540.jpg)
-
Ah, the joys of hacking away at a block of styrofoam, then trying to find just the right little bits to glue back on to create the undulations you’re after... I know it well lol
Looking good Guy. I can already see the end result in my mind’s eye, in one of your moody, magnificent photographs...
-
Looking very nice. Scary too :)
-
(https://myalbum.com/photo/AG3R2TECHZ7h/540.jpg)
-
And the tile is coming along, making sure there's no holes...and getting ready for the fish.
-
Looks great - am enjoying this immensely

Me too! And now very intrigued by the fish ... ??
-
This is promising to be one cracking build! Can't wait to see the end result, which should be suitably gloomy as mentioned. The idea of having branches growing through the building is pretty cool and will undoubtedly add to the abandoned and ruined atmosphere.

Oh yes, I am in the middle of it right now; I'm doing an entire table with integrated hills and cliffs. I accidentally bought a new pack of boards 5cm thick instead of the 3cm I was working with. All kinds of necessary puzzling with the cut-offs I still have of the old batch going on now, to prevent having to shave 2cm off the new foam... ::)
Me too! And now very intrigued by the fish ... ??
That! :D
-
Fantatastic looking base. This kind of progress makers me feel like am falling behind...
-
It will have been such a nice tower and beautiful site. What could be the story behind it's demise? Looking forward to the final moody cinematic pictures.
-
Thanks all :) Hope I can manage to get what's in my head, into miniature, so to speak. ;D
-
Tree is almost done bar the leaves;
-
Excellent progress - this is going to be stunning when it’s completed
8)
-
Thanks mate :)
First resin pour is in,this is crucial to do before finishing the tile, otherwise one gets a highly out of scale meniscus.
-
I'm still waiting for the fish ;D
Also "out of scale meniscus" ???
-

lol There is a Northen Pike already in there.
With the various water mediums, such as resin, you get a meniscus that curves up at the edges, way out of scale for true water. I hide this edge with plants,et cetera :)

I was not aware of that definition of meniscus!
the convex or concave upper surface of a column of liquid, the curvature of which is caused by surface tension.
-
Yep,I guess different liquids have different effects on surface tension :)
-
Second pour;
-
Beautiful...
-
:o
I think you've got the meniscus under control, that last picture has brought me to down on my meniscuses!
-
I fancy a stroll alongside that river...nice!
-
Coming along really nicely 8)
-
Superb, that last picture looks real! :o
-
That is some serious level of realism, even at this stage!
I'm in awe...
-
What an update :-*
-
Thanks fellas ,humbled :)
I wish I could show you all the tower to get some comments and criticism ,however it’s painted; so I’ll continue with updates of the tile itself.
This year I’m trying to titivate a bit more, last year I think I let myself down, also going up against Pedr’s beautiful work :)
-
I think your being too harsh on yourself regarding last years entry. The leaves floating on that river/bog were a fantastic touch. For this build the water reflecting the natural view outside your window is really cool and the banks are extremely life like.
-
That's cheating you are not supposed too take a picture of the real world lol lol lol
Lovely :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Looking brilliant so far Guy. Can't wait to see the completed build. 8)
-
Thanks fellas, I appreciate it :)
Small update;
-
And one in the process;
-
Those look fantastic- really realistic profile and textures.
-
Thanks man :) I’ll have to start using my camera, instead of my woefully inadequate ‘phone :)
-
Very realistic trees - looking forward to the finished piece
:)
-
Great trees 8)
-
Thanks man :) I’ll have to start using my camera, instead of my woefully inadequate ‘phone :)
No worries, the phone is getting the message across just fine ;)
-
Arrgh! I've built a bridge...
-
Once again... beautiful.
-
Thanks mate :)
The bridge was in the original design,I didn’t think it would work, then I thought bugger it lol I was reading an excellent little book, the Scenery Manual from Woodland Scenics, where they explain that dioramas are a compressed scene, using elements of a larger landscape.I thought that an excellent description of what we do,hence the bridge lol
-
It looks great from this angle. At one time it was no doubt a often used bridge before something happened to the Tower's owner. Probably even fished off of it...

Cute as a wee button. :D
-
Very cute. Butterfly of DOOM! or regular butterfly?
-
Lovely. :-* How big? :D
-
Lovely. :-* How big? :D
lol
Thanks chaps,I must be mad :D
-
Thais is looking outstanding already :-*
-
Again I am not worthy to compete with your terrain building skills. You sure have an eye for nature!
-
Can see the scale with your finger print in the putty :o
That really is tiny!
-
Thais is looking outstanding already :-*
Thanks Nick :)
Again I am not worthy to compete with your terrain building skills. You sure have an eye for nature!
Haha, phooey. I've seen your terrain mate :)
Can see the scale with your finger print in the putty :o
That really is tiny!
I have little hands lol
-
So the challenge will be to find the butterfly in the finished diorama?

You are even nuttier than I am!
-
Haha I’m in good company :)
-
Fantastic stuff Guy. You really are a master at building believeable natural environments and capturing it in a photo. Looking forward to see the finished article. 8)
-
Thanks Paul :)
-
Possibly my last update; who can spot the butterfly? :)
-
Wow. Perfect framing on that shot. Microscopic though it may be that blue butterfly leaps out at you. Fantastic detail all in scale. :-*
-
Beautiful tease of a photo- I can't wait to see the while thing. :D
-
That is insane...a different backdrop and you could be forgiven for thinking it was a real landscape.
-

This.

:o
-
I want to be able to build scenery like you! :'(
Love it! :-*
-
That looks so real :-* :-* :-*
When are you going to show us the pictures of your real built model ;) :D
-
Thanks fellas :)
All done,photos tomorrow,then off to Peder :)
-
Wow!! :o :o I can't wait to see the whole build!!
-
Definitely will need a lot of pictures to capture all the detail!
