Title: New Project: Hungarians (New stuff: sorozatvetö)
Post by: Olofeus on December 27, 2019, 10:00:16 AM
It's almost new year, so it's time for a new project. This time it will be Hungarians to mach my sons's Soviets.
These are the first things I made. They were nice sculpts and fun to paint. They are for Bolt Action so the bit cartoony looks are just fine. :D

Excellent Job! I've just started collecting 28mm wwII on the fact that warlord games have discounted their Hungarian Infantry units to half price!!!!! I'll be excited to see this project continue.

lol It's always interesting to see who buys new figures during such events. (Me included!  lol)

Are you going to convert any of them?

Love 'em! We need more of the smaller nations instead of the umpteenth SS outfit.

I'm not sure about converting them. I have thought about it.

Really nice! I have a bunch of Hungarian figures too. They are mainly Pulp Figures "not-WWI" Germans and figures converted from sets of plastic Russian in greatcoats and Japanese with German heads, weapons and equipment added. Plastic German in greatcoats and metal Hungarian figures weren't available at the time... >:(

I'd considered those Hungarians myself, but Warlord's range seems a bit limited. And Great Escape Games only do them in Summer dress. Of course the range could be just supplemented by German figures, but I'd like more models wearing those quilted outfits - without repeating poses.

Whilst the range is cheap right now, till Great Escape Games (potentially) do a winter line I'm avoiding them. ...Even with how often Warlord discount them. If I covered figures in Summer dress those two ranges, plus German figures, would be ideal though. As is putting together a Hungarian armoured force pretty simple these days (from Mad Bob, Paint and Glue Miniatures, or substituting foreign stuff).

I, actually, chose to purchase the summer stuff and not the winter figures, I found the winter figures on the website reminded me too much of winter war Russians anyway, but if I had seen the figures on this thread I would have picked them up. I also thought, by doing more of a summer scene it would be nice to see Russians in summer uniform as I do think, including myself, winter campaigns are bit overdone on the eastern front and it's nice to change stuff up once and a while.  Saying that I do believe that Great Escape games last Kickstarter was Hungarian Cavalry for ww2 and I do believe they are in winter dress, which is why I haven't ordered them yet. I don't know if that helps you as you could always use dismounted calvary men to give your infantry units a bit more variation.

My plan is to mix the summer and winter uniforms together. Not all troops were lucky to get proper clothes. ::)
Here is ten more.

I've got the assault paratroopers coming my way. Meanwhile I've still got 13 more models to paint from the first set.
I'm also waiting for the support group to come from the mail.

Does Warlord have enough figures to provide all the support options, or are you going to mix in German models, or any Great Escape Games pieces? How far are you going to go with this force - or is it something on the side, purely excused by how cheap Warlord were selling these for? :D

Sorry I'm discussing the manufacturers without commenting on the actual figures in the thread. Those are some neat paintjobs. Its not often you see folks giving their soldiers a bit of stubble - which fits perfectly with the setting. Those look like a bit of a sorry lot - or ah, let's say "hardened troops". ;)

I don't know how far this project will go.  :D
Warlord doesn't make all the support optionsand I'm not completely sold with Great Escape's models.
Only time will tell.
I do love painting faces. The restof the miniature is more painfull. lol

I have Great Escape Summer and Winter Romanians, intending to convert the former to the latter and also have some for warmer biomes. The figures look rather nice, but the lack of vehicles is a bit meh. However you can always substitute with Warlord games models and Company B models.

I combined Great Escape Games Hungarians with the Warlord ones and converted the Warlord Hungarians with bits from their german kits to mix a few figures up and change their appearance at least vaguely by addition of scarves and such. Or changing a head from a flat cap one to a helmeted one.

If someone is interested I can take a picture to illustrate.  :)

What I find is, Great Escape Games Romanians are fairly chunky models that do mix well with Warlord Games ones as well as Empress ones at a glance.

The Great Escape Hungarians however look a bit thinner and some heads are miscast, perhaps due to old casts and so look a bit odd at times, nothing that can't be fixed by replacing a head though.

Seeing as the Hungarian army shared equipment with the German Heer you can at times use Warlord Games Germans and have them pass off as Hungarians by using a different colour or adding on details as for instance the cockade on some caps or feathers on for instance mountain troops.

WWPD used to have a series of articles focusing on conversion of regular German figures into Hungarian ones, sadly that one closed but you can find the odd piccy in the 'paintalltheminis' site they have now https://www.paintalltheminis.com/paint-all-the-minis-news/2019/5/12/wwii-hungarian-tanks-and-vehicles?fbclid=IwAR2GTUKJDRqi2-LaeWfUoTicEe_u1aIdn__Zgex9PN9Z38_VbmMIe2j2-O0.

The first picture for instance has a German winter forward observer used as Hungarian radioman, further down in the showcase you see the use of Winter Soviets and german tank commanders as stand in for Hungarian troops.

(Edit: My phone messed up the pictures, so I took new ones with my camera. They're a tad darker but still show what I mean.)

So anyway, if you want diversity you can work with them, seeing as they got nice summer uniforms. I'm curious how winter Hungarians from them will look. The cavalry kickstarter looks nice thus far.

The Greast Escape Games Romanias I recommend without hesitation.

The Hungarians fitting fairly well, do seem smaller at times but usually work out okay in a mix of figures.

I also added a few German Heer miniatures that can be substituted for Hungarian tank hunters. The Fortress Budapest book of Warlord has some nice pictures in it that shows a few of the miniatures from wwpd.

Nice looking force, Olofeus. I've always liked the Hungarian quilted winter suits and camouflage.

The Greast Escape Games Romanias I recommend without hesitation.

I'm currently working on a platoon of Romanian infantry using the Great Escape Games summer dress Romanians as the starting point. I may have got a bad batch but mine required quite a bit of work to get them to an acceptable condition for painting.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

My base uniform color is Vallejo English uniform mixed with Vallejo yellow green 50/50.

I used yellow green as it is for  padded winter jackets.

Thanks, I thought Vallejo English uniform was in there somehow. I'm definitely trying your colors out when I start painting my Hungarians. Although I'm just using Germans in great coats or others I can get away with looking close enough. Yours look great but both GEG and Warlords poses just dont do it for me and I have other issues with Warlord.
Thanks

Oh saw your thread on it. Well the guns on mine were fine, but the faces also had some mould lines. I did however use scarves on most, so it isn't too noticeable. Despite that, they're nice models though.

We've got some Hungarians in greatcoat out next month. I think we'll have over 100 figures in the Hungarian range now.

On casting issues with the summer Romanians, we agree. That's why we replaced our master moulding facilities a couple of years ago.

It's loads of fun doing the minor nations. We have more hardly ever or never done ranges coming out this year.
