Title: BSC2020 LordOdo - Abandoned and broken down carousel
Post by: LordOdo on 10 January 2020, 03:11:41 PM
I was very certain I had like 50 unused horses laying around somewhere, I intended to build something including some of these. But after some hours of searching, I could not find them anywhere.

But it seems a fellow LAFer is kind enough to send me some of his spare horses, so in the end the project may well go through! :)

Some inspirational pictures:

I want it to be grimdark/ creepy, as you may have guessed from the pictures.

I have been doubting whether I make the carousel able to turn (and the horses go up and down) or I make it more durable and sturdy.. still not sure  :?

A fully motorised version, with lights and music would be great

 :D ;)

It has to be a broken down/ruined carousel,  :D I think the lights stopped working ages ago

Make it still go round, but with a creepy music box mechanism in the center.  :o

I watched the movie Goosebumps a few days ago and it had a broken down fairground set.  May be worth checking to see if there are any screenshots available

Good man.

At least if it doesn’t work, you can always say that it’s broken

The horses came into the mail today, so I made a quick start.

The LAF gallery is not very helpfull today in turning images, sadly..

They still go round merrily though... :)

There is a gap between the horses on the right, as I plan an empty pole there. The horse which used to be attached to that pole is long gone... :)

Build up the structure. Next steps will include planking the floor, and making it motorised. Then I will drill through the horses to attach them to their poles.

When that all has happened I will add details before the painting will start.

(Unpainted) Empire handgunner for scale.

Did the planking, and cut the horses from their attached bases and drilled through them, so they can be attached to their poles. Still a lot to do (might not motorise the carousel before the deadline, but then it will done later). I think I may finish in time though!  :)

(hopefully the images will be right this time, as I have no clue why turn around everytime I upload them to this forum)

 :?

I really don't get why they are turned, and can not be turned in the right angle afterwards, while I do so by clicking the 'edit' button..

I'm no help for what the problem is with the pictures but the base of the carousel is looking good!

If they are uploaded to the BSC2020 Gallery there is a rotate button; have you tried that?

This is a really interesting build... I tried to build a ferris wheel once for a gameboard Irish traveler carnival, but it turned out to be too complicated.

It is complicated, but I think it will work.. hopefully

Yes, I did.. but ah well, we'll see. I guess my final picture will be standing up right

This might be one of the last pictures, as I need to paint some bits before glueing parts in place, which need to be done to continue.

I used wooden skewers for this mock up, but I will glue the horses to copper rod, which is of course way more durable and the skewers don't fit in the holes I drilled trough the horses.

In the picture the motor is next to the carousel, but I'm afraid I won't be able to make it motorised in time.

Yayy first image which isn't rotated in a weird way

Any further pictures may be concerning the build of the fundament (in which I will build the system which will make the horses go up and down) and the roof of the carousel.

EDIT: as the picture clearly shows, the wooden planking of the floor has warped, but as it is an abandoned and broken down carousel, it actually doesn't concern me at all.
