So, I've ordered a few Daleks from Black Tree Design and I found myself wondering which 'era' to choose for my fledgling empire. Should I go for the grey of the 'Genesis...' Daleks or maybe the white and gold Imperials from 'Rememberance...' (though I should point out I'm NOT a fan of Davros!)? Or maybe even go totally retro and scratchbuild some little satillite dishes ala '... Invasion of Earth'?
Whilst browsing the interweb for porn... er, sorry, inspiration I stumbled across this...
... a collection of one page comics from the sixties solely featuring the Daleks! What could be better? And not a hint of the screaming, hysterical Davros anywhere! My mind was made up... I would have an army of colourful Daleks whizzing about through time and space in fantastically retro flying saucers. Perfect! That was until I stumbled across this guys work...
http://www.mechmaster.co.uk/cg-lair/index.html
My mind was blown! This guys artwork is amazing! And the story arc is enjoyable too (once you get used to the Daleks talking in a more 'human' manner). He manages to cram in a huge variety of Dalek types and colour schemes.
So now I am just waiting for my Black Tree Daleks to arrive and to hopefully pick up some Micro Universe ones too and I can start work on my new Dalek empire! To tide me over until they arrive I'm going to attempt to scratchbuild this fella...
... one of the original production sketches for the Daleks first appearance, and one that appears a couple of times in Mechmasters work. I am also currently trawling ebay for a suitable base for at least one Dalek Saucer (so far with no luck). I hope to have some pictures to post soon!

a collection of one page comics from the sixties
Are you sure they're from the sixties? 3.99 an issue seems mighty expensive for the sixties when wages were around a tenner a week.
-
The original comic strips appeared in the sixties as part of a magazine in the UK called TV-21 I believe. Marvel comics re-issued them in one volume fairly recently.
-
have you come across the sketches for the transforming dalek?
http://dailypop.wordpress.com/2007/08/17/doctor-who-the-missing-scripts/ (towards the bottom)
-
They're definitely old, Sterling. I remember reading them in the 80s when they re-ran them as a one-page strip in Doctor Who Monthly. As already mentioned they were originally in a magazine called TV21, at the height of the original Dalekmania in the mid-Sixties.

Ah yes, I used to love reading that. Mind you, I was in the army at the time but you could get away with eccentricities in those days :D
As for the Dalek colour, I love the "Genesis" gunmetal and black scheme. Sinister, austere and efficient!
-
that collection is worth getting along with the the TV21 compalations i have all 3 the compalations are stunning..

There was also a Dalek annual printed in the mid 1960s, that's a really useful one (if you can find a copy) as it has designs for special Dalek variants (for use on different terrain etc) plus some quite good scenario ideas.

lol the marsh dalek!

-
That's the one : the marsh Dalek was one of the variants.
-
I assume that it would suddenly pop up and the enemy would fall then about laughing, thus making it easier for the more conventional Daleks to exterminate them ;)
-
TV 21! I read that comic from issue 1 and can still remember the joy on reaching the back page and finding the Dalek strip. As to colour schemes,my over-large collection of Black Tree Daleks is split between the classic silver and blue of the first two Doctors and the gunmetal and black of the Pertwee era onwards--this latter is quite versatile and certainly not limited to "Genesis".
-
Yeah the gunmetal black is certainly a definate on my list as it also appears in the online comic I'm using as an influence. In it the rebelling Black Dalek paints his troops this colour in order to launch a night time raid on Skaro!
On a slightly different note, does anyone know where I can get a load of (cheap) robotic claws and arms from? I'm looking for the sort of thing the new Micro Universe Assault Daleks have. I'm having trouble sourcing the Micro Universe Daleks, the Assualt type are particulary 'over-priced' on flEaBay it would seem!
-
I can't decide about that online comic, there are a lot of liberties with the designs (anal I know) and the characterisations are so unDalek like... but the guy has produced some nice stuff...
I went with the Genesis and Imperial colour schemes... although I prefer to call mine Panzer Grey :D
-
As I'm typing this I'm watching a re-run of the 'Dalek' episode from the Ecclestone series and I see alot of simliararities between that Dalek and the ones in the online comic. I suppose its a question of taste (I WONT be using any pink and purple Daleks!), I think that giving the Daleks a little 'humanity' makes them more monsterous!
-
Worth a mention that the globe-headed Gold Emperor seen in TV21 and the Dalek Annual was the inspiration for the white version in "Remembrace of the Daleks" in 1988.I also suspect this was the starting point for the angular "Dalek font" which seems still to be the accepted way of showing Dalek speech. Some things just seem to stick. There is some influence I think on the Russell T Davies Grand Space Opera approach to Dalek stories--the TV21 stuff was way ahead of what a BBC budget could aspire to in the 60's.
I have seen complex and ingenious Dalek histories which seek to incorporate the comic strips and make them canonical--but that way lies madness...

Skaro Grey? ;)
-
Dalek Chronicles - a great find.
Skaro Grey? ;)
lol

I've been thinking about that Marsh Dalek and started looking around for images of the Spider Daleks... and came across this!
Not sure if it's too big, if I were to attempt one I think I'd want it to fit on a 40mm base. But I do like the way it still looks like a Dalek rather than any old sci-fi spider droid! Oooh, talking of driods I think I might take a look on flEaBay for some Star Wars miniatures... they must have knocked out some 'spider droids' at some point! o_o
-
it looks big, but really, it's all leg... there isn't anywhere for the power unit... just looks cobbled together to me...
the commercially available sculpt is nicked quite blatantly from the recognised fan design...

there used to be loads of reference stuff to that blokes designs online, can't find any of it now, just other people lifting it for different stuff...
-
Oooh... where are those miniatures from? I've not seen them before.
-

under sci-fi robots.... Xulu Security robot... lovely model, bit pricey... I only got two, I know some people bought a fair few...
-
Thanks for the link AEG, think I'll wait till the Black Tree Daleks arrive then order a couple.
I think I'm becoming obsessed with all things from Skaro... was helping the kids clear up the garden this afternoon, packing away the toys and their ball pit when I suddenly found myself holding one of the hollow plastic balls and thinking to myself "this would make a great Void Ship!".
Is this wrong? o_o

Yes, ball pool balls are usually too big, and more crucially, won't hold paint :~}

plastic DIY christmas baubles... my local art shop stocks them...

old pic, these guys are mid rebasing at the moment...
-
Thinking about it, the last time I was in Hobbycraft with the missus they had polystyrene balls of various sizes... I'm so far looking on having about fourteen daleks so I may go for a larger size anyway. Hmmm...
o_o
-
Forgot to say I love your Sontarans AEG. I always find your models so inspiring.
Ok, love-in over!

size is irrelevant... :D Daleks have dimensional engineering... the DARDISes were bigger on the inside just like a TARDIS...
-
From that AEG can I assume that the Daleks had more than one Void Ship (I like DARDIS anme though! :D)? I thought that 'dimensional engineering' may be the case... the ship that carried the Cult of Skaro looked a little 'bijou' inside! lol
o_o
-
I dare not ask... but what is a dalek? It's from Doctor Who? Right?
I have never seen the programme and I don't think it's been on the television here in Denmark in the past 20 years.

can't remember if they built the Void Ship or not... I have an inkling that there may be a throw away line that it isn't Dalek technology... but they did build the DARDIS (think that name only appears in the novelisation or the script... never used on screen) and use it in the Chase and the Daleks Masterplan, it's a largish cabinet on the outside, but much larger inside... doesn't have a chameleon circuit though...

they are... they crop up on here quite often as well... great space nazi aliens...

Yes it has late at night on DR1, if we ever get to meet I'll lend you the first of the newer series on DVD (I've the others as well, but errr måske ikke helt lovligt). Been a while though I think it was 2 years ago they showed the first series, not seen the later ones.
-
Am I right in thinking that they stole it from the Timelords? Also if that is the case could they have 'reverse engineered' further Void Ships? They are obviously capable of copying a TARDIS...
Btw AEG how's that Dalek Attack Saucer coming along? :D
Also a slight update on my own Dalek Invasion Force... I now have six Micro Universe Daleks 'winging' their way to me via flEaBay! Along with the Black Tree ones (I'll let you know when they arrive) I have fourteen Daleks! My Invasion force hopefully will look something like this when completed:-
Black Dalek (Invasion Force Commander) - hopefully going for the gunmetal 'Dalek X/Dalek Sec' look!
Red Dalek (Second in command, pilot/engineer for the Void Ship) - very dark red with black bumps!
2x Engineer/Scientist Daleks (Reporting to Red Dalek, pilots) - boltgun metal with red heads
6x Warrior Daleks (Reporting to Black Dalek) - grey
2x Body Guards for Black Dalek - not sure wether to go for 'dirtied' Imperial colour scheme or to go for the 'Time War' dalek look?
2x Hoverbout Daleks (Reporting to Red Dalek, riding scratchbuilt hoverbouts!) - grey with red bumps and detailing (possibly red heads but will look to similiar to the engineer/scientist daleks
And eventually:
2x Spider Daleks (Black Daleks 'elite' weapons!) - grey
Hopefully going to base them all on old GW bases, a couple of them (the body guards especially!) will be flying or hovering. I'm also going to take another trip to Hobbycraft on my days off to look for a suitable polystyrene 'ball' for my Void Ship.
I may even have some pictures to show soon as well!

the Daleks stole what they called the Genesis Ark from the Timelords... but as they have had dimensional engineering in the past (the DARDIS) they probably could have made their own with less dramatic punch... lol
Btw AEG how's that Dalek Attack Saucer coming along? :D
http://frothersunite.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21490&start=20
:D
although it's not so much an attack anything now really...
-
Just took a look... :D
Looks ok to me. Have you got a pic of it next to a Dalek for a sense of scale?
Always seemed strange to me that Daleks never 'hardwired' themselves into their technology. Could save so much 'space' rather than all those travelling machines bumping around inside the saucers! More room for warrior Daleks too.
o_o
-
I did a scenario for the old FASA rpg where the PC TARDIS materialised on a Dalek Saucer... I had the pilot hardwired into a massive structure in the middle... dunno if that was ever in something though, doubt it was my idea...

quite happy with the consoles like that, may extend them around at head height... the problem is, it's not very Daleky... nor is at human height... I could get a chair in and everything would be at the right level I guess, but I quite liked the idea of the Emperor slotting in there...
except he's a bit big for it really... even ignoring the base... hmmm... quite suits the Meep though... a nice red velvet command chair for him lol
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/roweller/drwho/IMG_1094.JPG)
like you said, a true dalek fighter would be a hardwired dalek... hmmm...
-
The consoles look ok... maybe a scout ship with all that information processing equipment. Could you not do a sort of cryogenic tank with a Khaled mutanty type thing inside, robotic arms coming out to tap away at the controls? Eye stalks. That sort of thing. Rambling now. Will stop. Promise. Ok stopped now.

I now have six Micro Universe Daleks 'winging' their way to me via flEaBay!
Curse you! I bet you've bid on the one finishing this afternoon as well! :(
-
No I have more than enough to be going on with!
Just about to make a start on the hoverbouts though!

-
Micro Universe Daleks arrived this morning! More than pleased with them... actually feel quite weighty for small plastic thingybobs! Will still base them on GW bases and weight them with washers to balance them out (hopefully!) with the BTD ones. Now I just have to crack on with removing their 'integral' bases!

Slight update! Micro 'Verse Daleks converted, rebased... camera battery gone dead! >:(
Slight change of plan too... ::) Now have the four members of The Cult of Skaro waiting to be painted! Four Micro Micro 'verse Daleks rebased, two of which are in mid flight! (Daleks Jast and Thay for those who, like me, are anal enough to know the names!) Dalek Caan has had his dome slightly re-postioned. Dalek Caan (the traitor! :D) remains 'un-enhanced (do you see the irony..? Do you..? Oh, ok). Just need to pop to hobby craft for a polystyrene ball, sorry Void Ship and at the same time fork out another tenner for a bloody camera battery! :(
-
fork out another tenner for a bloody camera battery! :(
it doesn't use AA rechargables? :?
-
No it uses some freaky dilithium crystal powered battery that costs a tenner if you buy the Duracell one and a tenner if you buy Boots 'own brand'!?! ;D
Sending the wife and kids into town this morning to get one while I get some sleep!
