My plan over the next couple of months is to revisit some of my earlier tutorials/articles and update them with additional commentary. the first is The Chapel of Rofenburg which was originally featured in Miniature Wargames 355 and 356 from 2012.

I have coated the walls with both ready mixed filler and DAS modelling clay.

The chapel has been based onto a piece of 3mm this plastic card with the groundwork built up with DAS modelling clay.

The distinctive roof was built up in sections using mounting card and card from the back of a sketch pad. It took some time before I was happy with the shape. For more details see the Blog.

The roof was tiled with individual card tiles which were glued in place with PVA Glue.

Are the tiles meant to be shingles or slate? I often see house for war games with red tiled roofs- I assume they are meant to be clay but they are flat tiles so I am never sure.

Neither, they will be clay tiles.
Grey slate tends to be more smooth (texture) and shingles would have a very distinct wood or grain texture. The roof on The Chapel of Rofenburg will be modelled to resemble oven backed clay tiles (Roman tiles).

Ah I see. I often saw red tiled roofs on war games buildings but always thought clay tiles were over lapping semi rounds; I didn't realize flat clay tiles were a thing.

I think round or fish tail tiles are more common in Europe. Square tiles are more usual in the UK.

The groundwork has been painted with a Snakebite Leather base and then highlighted with a Snakebite/white mix.
Small stones have been picked out in grey, highlighted with some white.

The model is now finished and details of how it was varnished and based can be found on my Blog.
As stated earlier, the model was originally featured in Miniature Wargames, but these regular updates have included more images and extended text to show how I build, paint and finish my scratch-built terrain.
