Title: Napoleon’s retreat from Wigan. Wanted British at rest
Post by: Scrubber on 11 April 2020, 02:28:35 PM
So in an effect to encourage David. Having already beat him once in napoleonic challenge with my Austrians. Here goes with the British.

Progress will be slow because everything through watery haze. I’m allergic to tree pollen at this time of year. So eyes look like extra from zombie flick.

Period Peninsula War. Army fictional.

I’ve had this first unit painted and stuck on bases for a while. Need some guidance and inspiration on finishing the bases.

Excellent, just how His Grace's Infantry should look, look even better with red and white plumes for the centre company chappies.

Thankyou Mr Faversham.

Base on left original. New one on right. Used brighter red and brought it higher up the plume.

Just need to decide how I can finish the bases. Do like those shown in the Albion book.
From the picture though I do have some dried grass to add to bases.

Sorry Brian, are these the ones you said you would sell ?  Don’t do that, they are great!  Proper storage will protect those bayonets if that’s your concern!

Indeed, if I find the ones I like, I will have firing French.

Nice work (be aware that mounted officers usually wore a bicorne during the "stove pipe era", rather than a stove pipe as per the painting).

Now, do we have to read this thread in an Eddie Waring accent?

Found jar of Vallejo earth texture.

Here is my first attempt. Think maybe needs a dry brush of light mud or sand.

These are the figures thinking of selling on as bayonet sticks out over front of base.

My first British made up brigade with be.
1 battalion 7th Fusiliers.
1 battalion light infantry.
1 battalion to be decided.
They will be accompanied by 1 company Brunswick Oels Jäger.

My question is does anyone make these Jäger in 28mm. Perrys in to late a uniform.
2nd question. My British battalion is 24 figures strong, so would company of Jäger be represented by 4 figures.
3rd question how do you Paint shaded black uniforms.

Small unit in a black powder 12 minis so a company would be tiny, 6 minis.

Front a rank have just released the Brunswickers with more to come....

Can't answer the formation questions but for black try the Foundry Charcoal Grey triad, but for the first highlight combine 50/50 of shade A and B, perhaps with a little Prussian Blue.

Looking in Albion Triumphant my Brunswick unit would be classed as “tiny” with a unit size of 5/6 figures in skirmish order.

As your Brigade is fictional, why not stretch it to two companies Brian? 12 is a nice number...
Interesting that you have the 7th Fusiliers, in my Reserve Brigade (also fictional) I have the 4th and the 6th Regts of foot

More research done.

Battalion Line Prince of Wales volunteers 82nd Regiment. yellow
Battalion Fusiliers. Royal Welsh 23rd regiment. blue. hackles white throughout.
Battalion Light. Monmouthshire 43rd Regiment. white.
Company Brunswick Jäger.

Brigade Commander Lt. Col Jac Jones MB. IoM.

Each battalion will be 24 figures strong, Jäger 6 figures.

I already have these figures for first two regiments so money saved.

Basically I’m a lazy painter, so some advice please.

I paint my British as follows.
Jacket.Crimson Red, dry brush scarlet. Next trousers light grey dry brush white. Apply shade tone to full figures, then lightly pick out scarlet and white.

More questions.
3rd east Kent. What colour should trousers be in Peninsular. White or grey.
Same regiment. What colour should the drummers jacket be, also colour of drum.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Brian, just quick notes:
The East Kent were the Buffs. So unlike other Regiments their overalls were not white but Buff coloured
until 1812 when proper grey trousers became universal. So depends exactly when you want to depict them.
Drummers jacket reversed colours so Buff with red facings on collar and cuffs. Front half of drum also in the Regt. facing colour (buff), rear of drum brass colour. Ropes around the drum white, red horizontal strip top and bottom around drum.
One important difference to other line regiments! The cross belts, haversack and knapsack straps of this regt. should NOT be white! They were Buff coloured to match the facings.
The lace edgings on the shoulders and across the front of the red uniform is as normal though and is the only white.
Hope this helps. A quick google search will bring up lots of uniform plates.
They are a nice interesting unit to have on the table actually, easy to differentiate.

Brian I painted mine a dark blue then highlighted with  GW Hoeth Blue or GW Lothern Blue, can't remember which:

There goes my one per day project. Repaint drummer coat.

Seriously thank you for that information Vodkafan.
Were all British drummer coat the facing colour of the regiments?

I believe so yes. The Light Infantry had buglers instead of drummers, their coat colours were not reversed.
You need to invest in a couple of Ospreys Brian  ;)

This was not period I intended to do. But someone bullied me into it. ;)
Originally figures my son was given, idea was paint them up and sell them on eBay.

The other problem I’ve found whilst painting them. Can’t get O’er the hills and far away. Out of my head.

David this is how I painted my Austrians white.
From left to right.
First army paint uniform grey, then heavy brush Matt white. Big brush army painter strong tone. Lighter dry brush white, finally go over straps again with white.

There may be some confusion here and need someone with better knowledge than me.
Illustration uniform 1809 Canada. White trousers and straps.
Illustration 1812, buff straps grey trousers.

The only picture I could find of buff trousers is on an ensign.

Isn’t google a fun thing.
Title: Re: Napoleon’s retreat from Wigan. Command bases

Quick question. How does everyone do their napoleonic command base.
Office drum and 2 ensigns all on one base. But would be off centre with 6 base unit.
Or split then over 2 bases with soldiers either side.
Would look more aesthetically pleasing that way a colours would be centred.

I put all mine on same base...all my commands are “offset”

For warlord black powder. How should I be arranging my British peninsula war.
Working on 6 stands of 4 figures per stand.
Should this be 1 command, 3 line and 2 of fusiliers. One at each end of the line.

I’m looking for 28mm British Peninsula soldiers to go into camp setting.
So figures not in full uniform and unarmed.
Not bothered about mixing supplies as not everyone is a standard shape and size.

I have already seen the Perry miniature range.
https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product/bh-142-peninsular-war-camp-scene-1-british-infantry-standing-down-plus-sentry/

Also what shape of tents would the British have used.

Thankyou.
