Herewith Battle Masters Miniatures
Review including files that contain the rules, additional rules and cards as well as the ability to play as a board game available here: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/700/battle-masters.
At any rate the game is a great one to introduce children to wargaming.
Many may well have fond memories of this game from their childhood or those that have been playing the likes of GW systems for years. I have been inspired to post these thanks to Neldoreth's recent Battle Master miniatures post.

What I have painted thus far. This includes good knights, goblin infantry, orc infantry, goblin cavalry (riding Wargs), evil knights and lastly (for now) Ogres (the original game came with one but I have three).

Good knights, shield heraldry is hand painted with flags being printed paper, which I designed from various images found online using of all things word. Transparent images are great for these when you can find them. I Mod Podge the paper flags after to help waterproof and protect them which I find works better than varnish.

Goblins, again hand painted shields.
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZC2Y0OP-ELE/Xph21XYAP6I/AAAAAAAANX4/dmJ5L5UWM0Ae8LyPwhxdapaBdJRqoI5kQCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/BMC%2BBattle%2BMasters%2BMiniatures%2B%252824%2529.jpg)
Orcs, the shields here having been embossed with old GW shield details. Must admit got a bit lazy here. As I was going to hand paint some shield designs.

Goblin Warg riders, I really like these cavalry. In the game they prove to be largely useless and I think their stats need to be enhanced. I enjoyed doing the various shades of wolf fur.

Great work. The miniatures aren't very good by hobby standards, but it's a game targeted towards boys, and quite good compared to boardgame plastic.
Anyway, I was frustrated when painting the crossbowmen. The lack of detail was so bad that entire *eyes* were missing. Had to paint them for Gloomhaven. Definitely looking forward to seeing your painting!
-
Great brushwork! I particularly like the wolves and their riders.
-
Thank you Rick. The wolves are cute but then I have always had a soft spot for Wargs ever since reading Lord of the Rings in my youth. So lots of fond memories.
Thank you Ced, certainly the standards are by comparison now lacking though these were among the first generation of plastic fantasy miniatures. I would like to see your crossbowmen. I will hopefully attempt mine soon. Though I am always dabbling into half a dozen projects at the same time. I certainly enjoyed painting these and it made a difference from 20mm 1/72nd historical I had been doing for some time.
Herewith a few more... Evil knights, again hand painted shields. I will be adding flags for them but have not been able to complete the design and print them yet. The pictures do not do the miniatures justice as the metal is slightly tinted to match the heraldry so greens, reds etc.

Some great freehand on those shields mate!
-
Cheers Rick.
"What do Ogres eat? Ogres eat what be tasty and sweet". Some may recall this line (Ogre song) I think it was from 2nd edition Warhammer.

The middle one, pictured here on his own, I see as the leader. I painted him in the "classic" appearance for memories sake. Very nostalgic.
-
Love this!
Just thinking, is there a digital version of this game?
Would be great for lockdown...
-
I wish there was Tim. Maybe... There are board game versions - if you have access to a printer - available here: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/700/battle-masters.
-
Thanks for that.
It just occurred to me that because of the way it plays it should translate to a quite a cool simple game, even for an android phone perhaps?
-
These are all fantastic! Great work getting through many of them, looking forward to seeing the Empire foot :)
I especially like the Chaos Champions aka knights. The shields are fantastic.
Also, funny how the ogres wear Greek Hoplite shields on their bellies, and even with Greek Hoplite designs! Well executed and inspiring.
Thanks
n.

Thank you Neldoreth
Herewith, Beastmen standard bearer. As I have 30 of these I am likely to divide them into 2 units of 15 each. Which means I will need to do another one of these. Plus two conversions into leaders. Currently it is taking a while just to prep the minis as they have rather nasty join lines. Also removing the original sticker shield designs. These are rather extreme close ups given the original size of the miniature.

Paper flag. printed black and white and then painted. Mod Podge coated for strength, durability and to make it waterproof.

Ram skull from the old GW plastic skeletons sprue.

Flag pole made from metal rods. with original axe removed and a hole drilled through the hand. This is an easy and quick way to do great conversions.

great stuff.
flags etc have come out really well.
love those ogres - got a couple of ebay a yr or two back myself.
-
Continuing great work mate!
-
Ha, really cool to see those minis getting a nice paintjob (and single bases too!). Kudos for the extra effort on freehand shield designs.
-
Great work! How did you get your goblins bums seated so nicely on their wargs? I've got a rider and warg primed up but they don't seem to fit together very well which has stopped me from working on them.
-
Thank you chaps.
Bloggard, I do enjoy doing banners and yes there is something delightful about these ogres despite them being not the greatest of ogre minis available. Must be the happy memories of years of wargaming they illicit.
Rick I still have much to do... Half a dozen different projects at the moment can never focus on just one for very long - but I will get them done.
Sigur afraid the appearance of the single bases will change on these. When it comes to the shields I find the dilemma is something that looks good whilst being something a Goblin himself would be able to paint.
Dark Choda the fit is not great. when joining the two halves of the Warg I used the type of model glue (by Tamiya) that melts the plastic and then clamped them together as the join was poor to begin with and this together with a bit of sanding of the sandle means they fit perfectly. You can also sand a bit off the inner side of the Goblin. You may need to sand and prime again... In the end the Goblin was also super glued into place. I also made the hole for their pin enlarged so as to facilitate the fit further. Annoying work but worth it.
-
Thanks. Good idea with the glue by the way but I bought second hand so I will have to see if they come apart to be glued again. In any case I will have to sand and prime again. I didnt imagine so much trouble for an old game piece lol
-
Pleasure Dark Choda - look forward to seeing yours.
Herewith some shields for the Beastmen. Miniatures have just basic colours at the moment detailing etc still to be added.

Herewith, an idea for alternative rules to substitute the original Battle Master rules. Use Hobby Products Empires game as a more complex version of Battlemasters that is still easy and quick.

Great work on the shields!
-
Thank you Belgian.
Herewith, Bastle Master evil knights, finally got round to adding flag/banners. These will certainly make apt opponents for the good knights. Flags are printed paper then coated in Mod Podge which protects them well. Glued using glue stick the regular sort for paper and shaped before the glue dries. Edges of the paper appear white and need to be painted as done below.

Great looking banners 8)
-
I love how much diverse personality you have given them despite the monopose. Great work!
-
Cheers Rick and Akula.
Herewith, completed Beastmen, 2 units of 15 miniatures, which is more than comes with the game. I included a standard bearer and leader conversion for each unit. These took me longer than I would have liked, kept getting sidetracked with other projects. At least the evil army is nearing completion just 2 more units to go.

Those shields look great en masse
:-*
-
I had a load of those old Beastmen, and I never succeeded in making them look good, but yours look great!
-
This thread is coming along really well, and it inspires me to get working on my Battle Masters figs. I agree with other commenters in that the beasts are intimidatingly tough to make look good. Yours are looking great with the cohesiveness and the banners.
Excellent stuff!
n
-
Touché Neldoreth as likewise have yours inspired me. Indeed, I have looked fondly at your miniatures for many years, so your kind comments are very heartfelt - thank you.
I will likely be looking at painting the human evil archers next starting with adding quivers to them - still deliberating on whether to remove their mohawk hair styles and whether to paint them as humans or as possibly half orcs. Can't wait to see more from you, I loved your recent ogre.
Thank you Theo I must admit that whilst I enjoyed the shields I did find painting the rest of the bodies, all thirty of them, somewhat tiresome and monotonous. Despite normally enjoying painting units and armies worth of uniformed figures.
Thank you Akula the shields have been the redeeming feature I think the black on white shields came out a bit better than the white on black. Just easier to paint I suppose...
-
This is brilliant work!
I love seeing old monopose miniatures painted well, this is very inspiring.
-
Thank you Mirjeki.
Herewith, most recent Battle Masters progress. Finally made a start on the Evil Barbarian Human Chaos Archers. One certainly does not see many of these miniatures they seem to be less popular than other miniatures in the box. I must say I was not originally that keen on them but I am growing more fond of them as I make progress on them.
I cut and sanded away the rather numerous and very pronounced join lines and added quivers - the quivers are from Mantic's Naiad miniatures which I had spare. I have decided to keep the mohawks afterall. I picture these bowmen not necessarily having the greatest range but given the power of their muscles, large bows and big arrow heads having good penetration and stopping power.
Hope mine come out as well as this chaps see: http://paintingagency.blogspot.com/2005/04/chaos-archer.html
The Naiad's themselves I am in the process of adding fish tails, turning them into merfolk to be even more aquatic in appearance. Will be working on making an under sea skirmish game of some sort maybe converting rules from Deep Wars, see: https://antimatter-games.com/deepwars/ and https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/121626/deepwars but that is another topic entirely.

More pictures available here: https://frictionbmcminiatures.blogspot.com/search/label/Battle%20Masters
As I only have 9 of these they should prove quick to do. It is a real pity as the original set had 10, worse is that for most units I have more than came in the original box. See: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/700/battle-masters
-
I love this post! These old school GW models bring back so many great memories of simpler times. I echo the other comments on this thread about the cool paint job. The colors and paint style really scream old fashion fantasy in the best possible way. Also, the time you spent on freehand shields and printed banners is commendable, and the work really paid off as these features truly elevate the minis. Can't wait to see what you do with the Chaos archers.
-
Thank you Operon for your kind words.
Herewith, initial paint job - some detailing still to be added - but main colours done. Will get them all to this stage and then basing will also need to happen.

Herewith, the start of the BattleMaster human Men-at-arms and artillery. I have since taking these pictures completed them together with the crossbowmen and will be updating soon. I am also using these to bulk out my War of the Roses Perry armies.

It's lovely to see this old game getting such a comprehensive colouring-in! I think that not only did many youngsters get into wargaming via BM, but that the models from it were in fact used by many as the starter core of a WHFB army later.
I particularly like the heraldry you've done, the halberdiers especially. Really good job. 8)
-
Thank you Major Gilbear. Agreed this set has a certain charm, especially for younger audiences it's just overflowing with toy loveliness and must have been the gateway for many to get into the world of GW gaming and then hopefully other wargaming as well...
-
Herewith, an update on my BattleMasters project which is now nearing completion.
Thought it would be nice to get all the miniatures out and assess what still needs to be done. I have recently added more human "good" knights, "evil" infantry knights and based the human "good" men-at-arms. I have also added an additional orc/goblin unit to bulk out the "evil" army a bit more but these are not original BattleMasters but are typical GW of the period.

Thought, given the number of pictures, I would just break it down a tad.
The king here is not BattleMasters either, indeed he is a Schliech smaller version of their big toys.

Awesome stuff that takes me back. I started out with HQ and then BM, but it is the latter that bridged the gap with WFB. :-*

Great seeing this stuff painted up. It was such a great "starter" box for so many reasons.
