This game has been played long before the big confinement.
I phone to my friend Greg Friday night who was willing to play with me a Honours of War WAS game.
Greg has an Austrian army and I have French. 15mm. Greg asked how many Austrians to bring with me?
I replied: -Bring ALL your army! But I had not any scenario in mind...
Even on the way to the club, I was improvising.
The initial setup
-
Orders of the day:
From the Supreme French commander to the Wing Commander Lieutenant-General Dinois d'Antoin, Compte de Millefeuille
"March forward with your avantgarde troops (3 light Infantry, 1 Chasseurs a cheval and 2 Hussar regiments) to control the sooner possible the village and the bridge.
Our Grenadier Brigade will cover your left flank anchoring at the farm.
Sending you one more brigade as reinforcements.
Our cavalry is coming from the east side of the bridge.
You must control the bridge from both sides!
Your task is to control either the village or the bridge until afternoon, (10 rounds), when we estimate our main forces will be there".
Orders to the Austrian Wing Commander, Feldmarshal Gregoire de Meracone
"We have information that the enemy will attempt to take control of the village and the bridge.
Send your Croats to the woods between the farm and the village.
We have superior infantry and cavalry in numbers and quality.
Engage the enemy immediately!"
And here is my avantgarde, moving full speed to control the village and the bridge...
-
My Grenadier Brigade is following suit
-
While our cavalry is marching at the east side of the river, a sizeable Austrian cavalry force appears!
They both deploy into line...
-
Two Croat battalions infiltrate with the well known Croatian swiftness in the woods.
They are followed by masses of Austrian infantry in march columns!
-
French and Austrian cavalry gallop to crash the one on the other!
-
The Grenadier brigade is deployed at the area of the farm.
One of their two artillery batteries comes in to action
-
The Fusiliers de la Morliere had to face the menace of some Austrian cavalry, so they prudently fall back behind the grenadiers.
At the background, right, the Arquebusiers de Grassin strive to contain the Croat storm.
The Chasseurs de Fischer have barricaded themselves at the cemetery behind the village
-
The Austrian Cavalry Wing, being more numerous, had the luxury to detach one Dragoon Regiment to watch the far side of the bridge
-
The French reserve brigade finally enter the table
Comte de Millefeuille faces a dilemma: Where they are needed most?
To reinforce the forces trying to take the bridge?
But his left wing is hanging on the air!
-
Believe it or not, Comte de Millefeuille, a man of iron will and nerves of steel, lives in his own world...
-
While the main cavalry forces clash, the Austrians control the other side of the bridge.
The French cannot pass.
de Millefeuille sends two hussar regiments to cross the river either side of the bridge, but they need a 5-6 to find a crossing!
Which they did not find for long :?
-
The cavalry fight didn't go well for the French
The Austrians had more heavy cavalry and two French regiments are done for.
Only the Cuirassiers du Roi manage to push back some Austrian dragoons...
-
The French light cavalry, still thinking how they can save their colleagues at the other side of the river...
Meanwhile, dismounted Dragons de la Reine try to hold the village from the Austrian infantry and Grenzers swarming around!
-
Comte de Millefeuille takes the decision to order the Reserve Brigade head for the bridge
-
The battle for the village intensifies! The Austrians come rom all sides! The Dragoons defend doggedly!
-
The French Hussars still thinking how to cross the river...
These 5s or 6s do never come lol
-
Meanwhile, at the French left, almost before the second light battery belonging to the Grenadier Brigade to unlimber, Trencks Pandours, with a double move, sweep around and attack!
The Grenadiers de France defend against superior numbers!
-
The Dragoons still hold the village!
-
...but the light battery is overrun and the French left is emptier than empty!
-
The French Dragoons try to cross the bridge in column, the Austrian Dragoons calmly waiting. What else to do?
-
Wrong timing for the French!
The village is taken!
-
Also the French left flank is seriously threatened to be encircled!
But the grenadiers fight bravely and repulse every attack!
-
Some more phases of the battles at the French left and the center.
The village has been taken, but the Chasseurs de Fisher still hold the cemetery
-
The French Hussars form a line perpendicular to the river to face the oncoming Austrians
-
While the first battalion of the reserve approaches the village, there is still a hard fight around the cemetery!
-
One Regiment of the French Hussars bring 6 at last and are crossing the river!
The French Dragoons determinedly cross the bridge and attack!
-
The Grenadiers de France, solid as a rock!
-
The French center crumbling...
-
The Grenadiers perform miracles!!!
They manage to eliminate or repulse every enemy unit in the vicinity!
-
A huge hole in the French center…
The Chasseurs de Fischer are still holding their position, but they have reached their limits
-
The green-clad Dragoons were victorious. The bridge is in Austrian hands!
Comte de Millefeuille split the Reserve Brigade:
One battalion went to help the Grenadiers
One battalion and the gun tried to shoot at the Austrian Cavalry
The third battalion tried to help the situation at the bridge
None of them was successful :-[
-
The Grenadier Brigade, isolated, heroically repulse anyone coming near!
-
The picture at the end of Turn 10.
Neither village, nor bridge.
De Millefeuille's plan failed tragically!
Gregoir de Meracone, the old Austrian fox, was victorious!
-
I'd say it was a pity, because it was a carefully laid plan... lol lol lol
-
That looks like great fun.
