Title: Elbows' 15mm WW2 Thread (Soviets, Germans)
Post by: Elbows on 02 June 2020, 07:33:06 PM
Having played a handful of games of Battlegroup in the past, I've always liked the system.  I collected some stuff to start trying it in 28mm a few years back and abandoned the idea shortly after.

One of my buddies and I were waiting for Battlegroup NORTHAG...but were a bit disappointed with the 10mm "ultracast" stuff, and have decided to steer back into classic WW2 Battlegroup.

So...I spent a chunk o' money and started building a Soviet force.  Here is the result of the first few weeks.  A load of vehicles en route from various places in Europe, but as always, knock out the infantry first!

I applaud your proletarian zeal!
Dont let your desire to protect the Revolution from Hitlerite agressors or Trotskyite backsliders turn into praetorianism though. Ok?
We'll be watching...

At this point, I simply assumed that after one or two minor losses I'd be executed or sent to the gulag...so there's that. :D

While not exciting...if I'm chronicling stuff, I'm chronicling stuff!  Some Flames of War entrenchments for use with Battlegroup as various defenses.  A nice little box of pre-painted stuff....that I then immediately re-painted for a more natural look.  FoW had some weird colour choices in their pre-painted scheme.

Will probably pick up the sandbag and wooden log versions in the future.

Looks good!

I’ve based individually but this looks good.

Yeah, at 15mm and playing Russians I decided almost immediately not to individually base.  I simply use wound tokens until a base is removed.

And I'm plowing on...having finished the bulk of my needed basic infantry (other small infantry teams, units, specialists will be needed...but mainline infantry are more or less complete!).

Pardon the poor pictures, quick phone snaps.

A second rifle platoon (third platoon total), an extra 50mm mortar and a sapper squad.

The "so far" army sitting in a tray;

Excellent work. Battlegroup is an outstanding game that works brilliantly in 15mm and at different game sizes. FotR Russians (Just need infantry I have most of the motor pool needed) will probably be my next force after I finish my British 1944+. I’m basing individually but can see the benefits of multi basing especially in horde like groups of Russians.

Keep up the good work,

Is the cloth/matt a commercially available one?

It is an old, Version 1 "Steppe" mat from Deepcut Studios.  A few months ago they released a new "Steppe" mat in Version 2 (probably nicer art, etc.).  No experience with the latter one, so the one in the picture is not technically available anymore.

The horde is growing...and I've been taking too many mediocre pics, so that's all that's being put up!

Fact #106: BA-64 Scout Cars are adorable. (repaints)

Repainted this IL-2.

Repainted this Yak-1. (yes, the decals are old, some are still setting...but overall, not very successful)

I've received a ton of vehicles lately, so the armour portion will get kicked into high gear.  Here is a trio of T-70 light tanks:

Oh, and forgot about these support teams I painted:

And another platoon of infantry - PSC this time.  They're nicer than I first thought.  Don't match well on the same base as FoW, but they would be fine on the table together.

While not a perfect facsimile...I bashed some BM-8-24 rocket launcher vehicles from some Katyusha and T-70 kits.

Basically obsolete T-60 chassis were outfitted with Katyusha style launchers...a bit shorter, and sometimes on a turntable.  These T-70s are incorrect chassis, but close...and the launchers are something I'd argue would have been feasible.

Well, a lot of stuff has been going on for the Soviets.

Two Su-85 tank hunters (Battlefront minis).

A handful of 4Ground cabins assembled, some painted - and ghetto thatch roofs added
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bQ4EGYDmMJc/X0ByOWuNy4I/AAAAAAAAGDY/rxCIlatdZUoalAkdwNDkEQE0kWOmMuIFQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Cabins%2B%25282%2529.jpg)

Two more Zis-42M halftracks, two M3 White Scout cars, and a third Su-76 (to complete the platoon)

Three more KV-1's (one with a ghetto turret)

Two Zis-42M halftracks and one Zis-5 truck (several more of those on the way!)

Some halftracks with "supply" inserts - I've assembled some other inserts to swap duties between trucks and halftracks (they share the same bed size)

Another insert - this is a kit-bashed crane (no real reference was used...just...bored).  Used for repair/recovery duty.

Lovely work! Although I have to ask what makes just one of the KV-1S turrets 'ghetto'? I understand what you mean with the thatch roofs, but the turrets have me stumped.
Title: Re: Elbowski starts Battlegroup Soviets (again...)
Post by: Elbows on 22 August 2020, 04:25:02 AM
I started building one of the three as a KV-1S...then abandoned it mid-build (why it has the S rear and fuel cans) - I had also assembled the S turret...so the KV turret got the wrong gun (and it doesn't technically match the vehicle's other bits).

Wonderful force with some really cool conversions. :) Who makes the ZiS halftracks?

The Zis are from the Axis and Allies miniatures game.  They did a Zis-5 truck and a Zis-42M halftrack.  They're some of the nicer miniatures from that game.  I picked eBay clean of a bunch of them as they're robust/simple/nicely sculpted.

I grabbed mine for around $4 a pop which is the same as the cheap Zvezda kits - but less work (and Zvezda trucks are reaaaaallly fragile).

I've been churning through stuff lately.

I traded my buddy for his log entrenchments and then repainted them.  Feels more properly Soviet.

Picked up a couple Axis & Allies Su-122s and "prettied" them up slightly so they better match proper 15mm miniatures.

They ended up pretty good - despite the detail being really soft on them.

Testing some new 3mm Sintra roads I made.  My Fat Franks ones from eBay curl a bit more than I like, so I'm messing around with a stiffer solution.  That causes its own problems...but we'll see.  Will play test with my "new" roads for a bit.

Thanks, I picked up a large order of 4Ground for a decent deal (if you order over a certain amount they ship free to the US).  I also did some bunkers but I'm not happy with how they look so they won't be featuring too prominently in this thread :D

I had some of the 4ground bunkers as a birthday present and wasn’t that impressed with them. I usually love their stuff and don’t mind the fact that you can see the where the tabs fit but the bunkers were quite bad and the removable roof created a join line that really irritated me and sent them to straight back to my hobby mountain to think about what they’d done :)

Yeah, I don't mind them, particularly for the price (less than equivalent resin ones).  I'm using earth texture to cover some seems (looks kinda/sorta like concrete), but they're definitely not my favourite items.  It's nice that they fit FoW sized bases.  I'll end up replacing them with resin ones from Ironclad or some such eventually.  Having said that, you can never have too many bunkers - so they won't be ditched.

In retrospect I should have built them onto a larger base with a lot of added build-up, etc.  Still, they do the part for now.

The joins are always an issue with MDF, but I do find it far more noticeable at 15mm.  Hence the ghetto thatch roofage!

Having more or less "completed" my Soviet army in a mad dash last year...I've finally come back around to add some fun and variety to it.  Found another local player and I've been able to play Battlegroup a couple times lately.

So...yesterday I built three Plastic Soldier Company Churchills - choosing MkIIIs.

And then today I planned to prime them...instead I finished them in a single sitting.  I'll snap a better picture at some point!

And my overall Soviet vehicle depot is starting to outstrip my actual storage...

While the army is more than complete enough for almost any game...Battlegroup features so many cool/unique options that I'll just be tinkering - and eventually adding some stuff for early war...and late war, etc.  I was smart enough to knock out the basic infantry first!

I've got some more Churchills to build, a handful more halftracks.  I'll probably be doing an ambulance halftrack, a tented aid station, etc.  I have enough infantry to make a few more special units, etc.

Basically whatever tickles my fancy is what's getting built.  I also want some more less-than-awesome tank options.  More T-60s or T-70's, and some Valentine III's, etc.

I totally agree. Battlegroup gives you such options and such diverse/unusual units (that don’t often get any table time in most other games) and they are actually usable and do something, that you end up adding all kinds of cool stuff and little conversions/vignettes/diorama pieces.

I whipped up the last two Churchills as proper MkIV versions with the cast turret, a spare fuel tank and the mud guards in place.  Made up a simple camouflage scheme as well.

One of the MkIIIs from yesterday is shown for comparison.

I really like those Elbows, and the mkIII and mkIV paint schemes work very nicely together as well.

Thanks.  It's too easy for a Soviet army to become a sea of the same colour green (4B0 I think).  So as you can see from my vehicle bin, I have a handful of units that are painted differently.  With the Churchills I wanted two entirely different unit schemes - and I figured someone would camo-paint their tank...risking a couple years in a gulag.

Been doing a bunch of little weird "finish it up" projects.

Two more Maxim teams and two halftracks - one of which is designated as an ambulance.

This little 1/144 Zvezda Po-2.  A tiny little kit with really poor detail, but it'll do the job.

A little Forward Aid Post (really useful in Battlegroup)  Due to lack of medical figures/casualties, this is simply an officer checking in with the two medics I do have.

The big project yesterday/today was making three defenses - for use as foxholes, trenches, gun or mortar pits, etc.  Basically anything to represent many of the defences in the army lists.

Smaller one is sized to take an FoW scale artillery/AT base.

The other two are each sized to hold three FoW bases - and you can sneak a small additional base in with this guy.

This one also holds three normal bases for infantry or MG teams, etc.

Because the pits are sized for FoW bases they're obviously a bit large and would even be suitable for 20mm figures (which I don't own/use).  Combined with bunkers, I'll soon have a pretty fun defensible area.  Need some barbed wire and some minefield indicators.

A small mortar/machine gun pit, a netted observation post, and a log bunker complex.

The complex has a removable roof for the bunker and spaces for a number of units for Battlegroup.

Starting a small German opfor.  I picked up three of these Panzer IV Ausf. H's from the "Hit the Beach" starter box that my buddy didn't need.  Not...jazzed with my paint results, but they're good enough.  They'll receive decals in the future when I actually get some.

2x Kubelwagens
3x StuG III F/8s
3x Kettenkrad (with drivers based alongside, since mine didn't come with riders)
2x PaK40's with FJ crewmen.

The Fallschirmjaegers have actual Fallschirmjaegers now...the force is growing.  One platoon finished, command and support elements on the way.   Also added a thiccc StuH 42 (which I ended up painting twice because I hated the first paintjob!)

After pushing back the Germans in yesterday's game...we kept the table (and most of the destroyed vehicle hulks!) and the Germans launched a counter-attack.  The Soviet survivors from the first game were dug in, waiting for reinforcements.

The town of Pepyanguska
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yNoHj6DBV18/YJn67NJekYI/AAAAAAAAG58/EJpMhDw2eYQUo6LZhgLAN6xCbQpnXVLZwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/07.JPG)

A Pz. 222 shelling the church from distance with its autocannon.

The Germans perform a pincer attack - hitting the town from both directions.

The destroyed KV-2 from yesterdays game was repaired enough to operate the turret and it helped fend off the German armour.

While the Germans suffered egregious casualties, the arrival of several Stukas helped save the day and the numerically superior Soviet force withdrew under heavy bombing.

Been a while, but some updates.

When I began my 15mm BG project I started my initial Soviets with several Zvezda kits.  They all featured slightly different paint schemes, and some slapdash decals, etc.  I put this lot up for sale on eBay and luckily no one picked it up (for a steal even!) :D  So...out came the ultrasonic cleaner and alcohol.  I stripped many of these down, re-gunned them, swapped out some turrets, added stowage, added some battle damage, and then repainted/re-decal'ed the lot.  I still have a few more on the way.

So, my buddy's car was stolen (and recovered) a few weeks ago.  One of the only things stolen was the box containing his Battlegroup minis (Germans).  I have suitably reprimanded him for leaving them in the car, but now he's lacking motivation to rebuild German infantry units, etc.  I used this as inspiratinon (or excuse...is there much difference?) to add to my small Fallschirmjaeger force.

While not the staggering size of my Soviet force, my FJs are getting some additional units in the next week, starting with this small collection:

I've added a sniper team, a loader team, an additional tripod MG34/42, a 75mm recoiless gun, and a forward aid post.

This brings my FJ fighting strength (infantry-wise) to two well supported platoons.  This tends to be enough for most games with Germans as they're expensive.  My FJ's serve from Kursk to Normandy, and I've got a bundle of tanks/additional AT guns on the way.

Received the Kasserine box from Flames of War.  While I detest that game, I love the deals you can get on 15mm miniatures from their starter boxes!

I painted up two of the 50mm guns (I had painted the crews yesterday in anticipation of receiving the box).  I added an MG loader team, a 120mm heavy mortar team, and a small FJ scout squad armed with several panzerfausts.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOWp0mLcC4jqLyMI6lqiazgrz7-BHDrUvrpQI94Z5NwYCB8cyaeeZOJIi_v_VS1T35FDSzL930-yMPCAPe3UGR_y_6cM94cd0df1SeO3LZcS6GZuME95IyEVdwNmL6726YTVqn8ZNXH9_ZouRsf8M8J_ArywX3_3o2LKLzf-DG1voC-3axwuaWTt7muw/s2048/50mm%20Germans.jpg)

Also played some 20mm Battlegroup this evening:

And so I did the 50mm guns last night, and these six tanks last night and today.

Trying to get the 15mm bug out of my system, but it's been a nice break from 28mm stuff I've been knocking out lately.

Great work on all of the above mate, particularly like the 203mms and the Lees, there's always something refreshing seeing a tank you're accustomed to seeing in 8th Army camo in full Red Army fig.

Yeah, it's why I think the Soviets are arguably the silliest army to play.  You have access to "most" of the entire Allied catalogue, including their less successful options.  The only thing I can't use from the Kasserine box is the M4A1 Shermans as they didn't send those to the Soviets.

I don't particularly like Shermans or some of the later Allied stuff, but I love silly stuff like the tiny Stuart, the big Churchill, the bizarre M3 Lee, etc.  So being able to field them alongside the army I like the most is excellent.

After blitzing through the Kasserine box like a rabid squirrel...I've painted my last tank from the box for a while, a Panzer III quickly converted to a Panzer III N - adapted as a Flammpanzer.  Removed the side visor ports from the turret, made a "tank/pump" out of a spare Churchill unit, added some hosing from a Tiger tank exhaust and added a thicker "faux" barrel to the front.

So, since getting the box on Thursday I've smashed out:
2x 50mm Guns
3x Panzer III L's
3x M3 Grants
3x Stuart M3A1s
2x Panzer III N's
1x Panzer III Flammpanzer.

The rest goes into storage of gets flipped on eBay to recoup some of the cost of the box.

So, since this project is at the "playable" status, I don't often crank out 15mm stuff.  However, it's a nice break from all the 28mm fantasy and sci-fi stuff I've been doing.

I picked up the absurdly well priced 'Kursk' box recently and have been adding some more cats for my German force.  Some buddies expressed interest in more Normandy based games, so I want more options for the later war German stuff.  Weirdly, I also did not have a single Tiger for my FJ support.

Really solid buildings.  Decent prints (for FDM), and they disassemble for using the interiors nicely.

Finding myself with a somewhat uncharacteristic backlog of miniatures (too many projects on the go at once, I s'pose), I decided to find something quick and simple I could get out of the painting queue.

A platoon of 15mm Valentines in Lend Lease use with the Soviets (Flames of War minis from the Kursk box I picked up recently).

It may seem like sacrilege...but as a Soviet player, I'm not a huge fan of the T-34.  I'm a KV guy through and through.  However, almost every FoW starter box comes with T-34's and they're definitely a staple for Soviet forces.  So I threw together my last three (well I have one more on sprue I likely won't bother with) T-34/85s.  I didn't bother building the shorter barrel turrets though I may do that in the future if really bored...

I now have maybe 7-9 of the short barrels, and six of the T-34/85's...so that's enough T-34's to see me through most scenarios.  I am also really tired of the FoW T-34 kit as it's old, poor to assemble, and its mold is showing a lot of use.  The tracks lean in, the front fenders don't line up, there's a lot of sprue flash, and the plastic is mediocre.

Trying to trim down the pile of 15mm plastic I've acquired recently.  I knocked out some of the new Zvezda T-70's.  Not a fan of the kit (way too 'true scale' and thus super tiny pieces...if you're all thumbs this kit will be a nightmare).  However, done and painted, I'm happy enough.  I love T-70's.

Did you see the news about Battlegroup?

Yeah, some of the Zvezda kits lately have been really good, but the old BA-10 was something like 26 pieces...an absolute travesty for a 15mm kit.  It's the gold standard of garbage/frustration for building 15mm.

I saw the BG news, but honestly I don't play this game enough to be excited, etc.  I also won't be playing a "different scale" of WW2 (as they mentioned a NORTHAG-style alternate version).  I enjoy painting up 15mm WW2 and every now and then I get a game in, but my whole BG group disappeared as usual.

The other guys I used to play with are 40K players and they abandond projects regularly.

I haven't painted much recently - almost exclusively terrain and working on actually finishing up some games.  However...15mm is a nice palette cleanser when I don't want to paint anything, but can whip out some simple vehicles in about an hour.

Zvezda SU-152 pair. (One is new, one is my old one that I stripped to repaint)

Thanks Cap, I keep going back to 15mm as the palette cleanser.  I have acquired a rather absurd collection at this point, and it's still growing.  I'd say...65-70% of the models I own and have painted have never seen the table in anger.  Too bad, but at least I'll have them on hand if I ever trick anyone into playing BG.

May have to start running solo-games myself or something.

Let's keep the silliness rolling: a Zvezda Jagdtiger.  Another German monster that will likely never see the table - short of designing a scenario around it.  I love these little $3.50 kits, and it's fun to get to do up all the weird German stuff.

I don't yet have any panzergrenadiers to go with them, but I had a small stack of 251 half-tracks, so I assembled and painted them today.  One of the reasons I like 15mm.  It's dead easy to whip up a platoon of vehicles in an afternoon.

Nice looking half-tracks.  Well done.

Do you have the grunts to go with them?
Title: Re: Elbowski starts Battlegroup Soviets (again...)
Post by: Elbows on 13 September 2023, 03:23:27 AM
Nope.  I only have a large amount of Fallschirmjaeger painted up.  I've been adding lots of German vehicles simply so I can do scenarios.  I may eventually paint up a single platoon of basic panzer grenadiers to go with them.  Right now, I simply proxy my FJ as basic Pz-grens because their squad sizes match.

I've developed some 'random force creation' tables that we use when playing Battlegroup - and stupidly used the whole Kursk book instead of just models I own.  So frequently rolling random units in half-tracks.  They'll be good to have on hand.

I added these PSC Steyr Cars today - and heads up, the kit is absolutely awful (at least in 15mm).  You have to hack and chop all kinds of stuff to make them fit...not sure how they let that slip by the initial production process.  Terrible kits.  Shame since I adore the vehicles.  I'm not happy with my paintjob, but they're serviceable.

To clean the taste of the Steyr Heavy Cars out of my mouth I whipped up these two Nashorns - a newer kit from Battlefront.  Superb as always.  I had five, but it's a dual kit that makes Hummels and I don't fancy using much on-table artillery for games (feels a little silly to me, always has), so I sold off three.  Made the last two into these nice Nashorns/Hornisses.

I just worked through the entire thread and that was time absolutely well spend! Your painting is top notch and your collection at this point very impressive and very inspiring to someone with a huge backlog of 15mm WW2 miniatures.

Keep it up, I am looking forward to seeing even more!

Thanks, it's been a fun project.  I don't play BG often enough to really warrant all this stuff, but I have it on hand..so why not paint it.  It's been a process "learning" how to paint 15mm stuff.  Almost all of my original Soviet stuff has been repainted or sold off and replaced as I'm figuring out the tricks and methods to doing it all!

I recently sold off my original Panzer IV H platoon (featured back several pages) because I was really unhappy with the colour.  I had some more from a later army starter box...so I replaced them today.

The original platoon:

An Ostwind and Wirbelwind for some anti-air cover.

Great stuff Elbows! Almost in the same boat…… I looked at the Battlegroup books, got over excited and started collecting both sides but for most of what was possible instead of being sensible and planning specific forces - which was a mistake! I especially like the fact that not everything is necessarily a tank and smaller even non-combat vehicles have their place on the tabletop.

The Steyr kits is one of the things that may have pushed me over the edge - one thing I can still do is build a small plastic kit, oh accordingly not! They make a lovely end piece but the path to them is simply not worth it  :D (I bought some expensive tiny clamps in a closing down sale and I’m going to try again….)

Thank you for posting,

Andrew

While not terribly exciting... I recently picked up a large set of Crescent Root's 15mm 'Normandy'-esque buildings.  I ordered some brick and stone walls to add to the table.

I find Normandy pretty boring, as growing up in America, we've more or less been taught that WW2 only consisted of Pearl Harbor, Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Stalingrad.  However, I have two buddies with British forces, and two buddies with American forces...so I wanted an alternate table for non-Eastern Front stuff.

I ordered some brick and stone walls from Monday Knight Productions(?) and they're...as bad as I expected.  Very classic late-90's "convention" level terrain.  I spent a lot of time scraping off flash, sanding the bottoms flat, and cutting off extraneous junk.  I think I salvaged them.  These will be used along with the Normandy buildings to make some farms and just add cover to the table.
