Title: Fantasy race variants at affordable prices?
Post by: Robosmith on June 10, 2020, 10:29:42 AM
I've been wandering different web stores to find an interesting hobby project. Something like Pirate Orcs, Forest Goblins or mutant dwarves. Something you don't see every day but still more than 1 off minis. Some of them come in close to £5 to even £10 a human sized model and that's a bit rich for my blood. So I wanted to throw it out there and ask what sort of unusual armies (in plastic or metal) have people run across?

These spring to mind from EM4 - https://em4miniatures.com/collections/plastic-fantasy-miniatures (https://em4miniatures.com/collections/plastic-fantasy-miniatures)

Very affordable at 25p a figure. Might be too mainstream though!

Why not try some of the Oathmark & Frostgrave plastics & do some kit bashing?

You could always try using an unusual paint scheme to unite disparate cheap models (whether new or second hand) as a single force.

I've done a bit of this with 'red goblins' and D&D-style blue-nosed hobgoblins - using miniatures from a whole range of manufacturers:

There are all kinds of possibilities: blue men, ice elves, metal-skinned dwarves or zebra-striped beastmen, for example.

I’m currently building and converting a forest Goblin force, but not going down the GW spider route!
Mine is more a mid American Mayan theme, at the same time keeping away from Lizard men dinosaurs too.
I’m using the Shieldmaiden miniatures for the Goblins.

So I’ve got terror birds, gecko style creatures, and a swarm of giant wasp like dudes.
Thinking of adding some jungle style tree men?

Pictures somewhere on this forum.
But more to come....

CP Models do some nice themed Dwarves (or Dwarfs, whatever) - Arabian (labelled as 'Dwarven Empire') and Celtic. They also do some Goblin ninjas, for reasons best known to themselves.

Some pirate orcs and forest goblins here, seem reasonably priced:

Well worth dipping into the catalogues of people such as Ral Partha Europe, Scotia Grendel and Black Tree Design.

That's exactly what inspired me to look into this sort of thing. I remember fondly seeing armies made of mishmash units like Savage Orcs, Black Orcs, Forest Goblins, Night Goblins and regular Orcs/Goblins. It's really cool visually and I wanted to see what could be done today now we're seeing cheaper plastic boxes like Wargames Atlantic releasing spider riders and the recent forest goblins box.

Beware of Bridge... it looks as if they have gone out of business but their page is still active. Many folks tried to contact/place orders but nothing. Sadly so, as they have some great figs.

I've kept this one open rather than reference back to the sticky thread as it seemed to be about variants of Fantasy ranges, rather than just about cheap Fantasy figures (i.e. pirate orcs, etc.).

Most of those links are now broken and that isn't what I'm looking for. There's a specific type of model I'm wanting not just generic cheap models.

There's a bunch of idea through my blog if any interest.

Kroot fantasy birdmen, gnomish warriors, snake people, hobgoblins from LOTR Orcs, and other such items.
