Title: The life of a saint (Update 07.10. Finished diorama Nr. 2!)
Post by: Kurl Veranek on 03 July 2020, 12:26:34 PM: Hi guys and gals! First post on this forum. I'm mostly a Lotr player but recently I've been on a historical trip.

I've always been impressed by the life of Jeanne d'Arc and I've decided to build and paint a series of dioramas depicting key moments of her life.

The first diorama depicts Jeanne and her six companions on the way from Vaucouleurs to Chinon. The scene I wanted to capture is not documented but it's how I invision them seeing they are close to the safety of the walls of Chinon. Jeanne gives the spurs to her horse and gallops ahead taking of the itchy helmet she had to wear to disguise herself. She looks to the heavens maybe giving thanks.

Don't blame him, it is a really nice place. I was there on my holidays last summer. They have a really cool lift from the lower town up the cliffs to the castle. I'm sure Jeanne would have enjoyed riding in it when she got there as much as I did. Ingenious fellows, those medieval sorts. :)

Lovely figures and a great scene. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Nice little touches added such as the hair inside the helmet as she takes it off.

I see some frostgrave Sildiers bits there on the pack horse. Is there anything that Soldiers sprue cant do?!!

And the fine details on the gamebesons are wonderful! That way the paintjob really looks like real fabric.

Where did you get the shields of the two knights? I am always looking and seem never to find really good shield ...

Post by: Kurl Veranek on 07 July 2020, 10:21:54 PM: @Aesthete: they are purely for the diorama. Maybe oneday I'll make a playable army. I have no idea which rules would be best for the subject matter. I've only been a fantasy wargamer for now.

@HappyChappy439: I'm curently experimenting a lot. For the left knight I tried to acomplish a "blued" armour. The effect looks way better in reality. The foto doesn't work that well. I painted the armour silver washed it black and then applied a thin blue wash after that I drybrushed it softly with silver and applied some highlights.

The middle one is standard silver, wash, and various highlights.

The right one is silver, black wash, silver drybrush, some selected silver highlights.

But I will try many other ways since I wan't various armour looks that were common in that period.

A spearman maybe in the service of a minor noble house near Poiters, a mercenary with a twohanded axe, a noble knight wearing a fine jupon over his armour and a crossbowman who will get a pavise later.

Next up is Jéan d'Arc one of Jeannes brothers. He wears the heraldy given to Jeanne and her family. The Maid herself never used this coat of arms but it seem that her brothers bore them into battle.

Next up is Étienne de Vignolles or better known as La Hire as promised!

His coat of arms:

I remodelled parts of his torso and legs to make him a giant among men as you can see on the last picture. Even bent over in his attack he towers over a normal miniature.

And some wip pictures so you can see how I converted her. I shortened her legs made her generally slimmer by shaving away a lot of plastic and sculpting new parts. The head is from a Lotr woodelf ranger but also a bit converted by giving her another expression.
