Title: Question on WW1 US sailors
Post by: traveller on 12 August 2009, 09:35:46 PM
I was searching for US sailors uniform and came across these two images. Only one question remains, is the scarves around the sailors neck black or dark blue? Grateful for any help!

I believe it's black, according to this source, at least...

I found this:

http://www.thesandpebbles.com/yangtze_patrol/china_uniforms.html

This is a few years outside of the scope that you're looking for, but might be useful. in that first picture, the enlisted man's scarf certainly looks black to me.

And here:

http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/uniform_history.htm#en6

While this one doesn't specifically mention the color of the kerchief in WWI, it does mention that the US navy had a tradition of using black kerchiefs which was handed down to them by the pre-revolutionary British navy.

So I think it's probably safe to paint 'em black.  :)
