Title: Gritty fantasy - THE HORDE page 4
Post by: midismirnoff on 12 September 2020, 09:41:08 AM
Hi there, during the past lockdown I tried to figure out how many unused sprue parts I had. They were nearly a hundred frames, from which I had picked up and nibbled here and there some pieces. That was when I firmly stated I would not buy another plastic kit before I had used everything I could from those sprues.

And so I started my project, where I build two enemy forces for Dragon Rampant using the left behind sprue parts. I hope the painting style will keep the unruly bunch together.

First wave of Koolist archers (the cult of Koolo, well established in the Squaranth Valley is growing stronger every day).

Those are some interesting kit bashes, they certainly change the look of the base figures.

Great stuff. Frostgrave + Perry is a gold mine of potential. Really nice, consistent and very atmospheric paint scheme too.

Here's Captain Perforta Shtormo who joins the fray. His men may not be very fond of equipment mantainance, but they are eager to kick the Koolist scum out of the Valley.

Stunning work. Those men-at-arms are sublime. Your stuff would be great for Vanguard, if you're into skirmish games.

Bonega Haveno is a large and multiethnic city port at the end of the Squaranth Valley. Its militia is grim yet colourful, fights for the highest bidder and plays dirty.

That's a great looking motley bunch of MAA. The gritty paint job shows them up in all their (not so) finest glory. Great work!

Where are the shields from with the flayed head?

Hi, thank you for your kind words. The shield are GW beastmen's, it was a plastic kit of the time before AoS, the one with minor and major beastmen in it. The beastman's head in the militia is also from that sprue.

Cheers!

Ah thanks...probably explains why I didn’t recognise it.

Might have to go hunting for some

All good so far but I am really liking the mixed race ragged militia the best. How far are you into using up all the sprues?

Thank you Fred!

Thank you vodkafan, it seems to me that the mixed race has two good potentials: 1) it fits the uneavennes of the build, and gives a motive to the irregular look of the whole. 2) it also allows the painter to be very consistent and regular in the painting scheme of cloth, weapon and such, because the skin tones will keep everything varied and diverse.

At the beginning of the project I had 60+ unused sprue frames, now they are more or less 45. I will count as "spent" a sprue that has no more "bodies" on it.

Some biggish Reaper Bones Knights join the fray. The fine effect on the cloth was achieved with a generous dose of Vallejo Slow Dry, which let me treat and blend the hues as if it were an oil color.

Some cavalry at last! Here's the Malpeza Strikanto, an unruly bunch of raiders, occasionally tied to the Koolist cause. Some GoT's Bloody Mummers inspiration can be rightly guessed.

They are certainly different. Is the cracked effect on the last shield a purposeful look?

Hi Odo, thank you. They are indeed "different", and that is more or less what I am trying (groping) to do. I'm no sculptor, nor good painter, but I have a shedload of lying there bits, and want to put them on the field as a fantasy army with a distinguished feeling to it.

They look mad as hell, Midismirnoff  :)

Thank you Batty, madness is a big part of it.

Love those shields.

Did you use crackle paste to crackle the shields, or a Games Workshop crackle paint?

I'm thinking of painting some horses with crackle paste to get a cracked, reptilian skin look. The horses are sci-fi and supposed to be mutating.

Hi there, I forgot to answer about the crackling. It is the very genuine GW Agrellan Earth. I think it would be great on horses, I'll be stealing the idea!

I wonder how the Agrellen Earth will work on horses, Midismirnoff?

I'm excited to see. I was going to add horns to the heads of the horses and with the cracked effect they were to be muties  :o

Let's see how this goes  :D

There's very little gunpowder fantasy out there, cool to see some magic muskets being fielded.

These guys look properly grim!

Thank you Wirelizard, they are indeed ghost muskets! I don't really know why is it so, and what fluff lies behind this stuff, but it seems to be something unusual.

Such a massively random concoction of so many different plastic parts, yet strangely, it all hangs together really well. Great work. Ultimate kitbashing - just throw it all in and make sense of it with the painting and fluff.  8)

Very cool aesthetic. Definitely feel the decay. Your colour choices and weathering draw them all together. Very nice variety of conversions, too.

Thank you Captn' I think you had it right. The main point here was to make an army (well, two actually) out of single leftover parts. Except for the caped horses, that were altogether unused, the rest of the models come from sprues that didn't contain more than six or seven whole models, so couldn't fit in any "stand alone" project. The rather extreme gritty speed painting is the cement I needed to make them somehow stay together and not fall apart.

Very cool aesthetic. Definitely feel the decay. Your colour choices and weathering draw them all together. Very nice variety of conversions, too.

Thank you Peithetairos (is there a pun in your name?)! I'm glad you liked them!

LOL! That would be a cool idea, but opposite to my needs! In fact I'm trying to get rid of my leftover bits with this project!  :D

The Green Cavalry, despite its name, is made up of seasoned cavalrymen, who raid the weakest parts of the Koolist deployment. The Sheriffs are mainly an infantry force, and can boast no Knights, and so the Green Cavalry is sometimes given the duty to punch through enemy lines. In such occasions, it lingers behind the Phantom Phusilier Phalanx until enemy lines are disordered, to unleash its brutal charge.
