Title: Help needed, fantasy boats and catapults.
Post by: Tim Haslam on 09 October 2020, 02:15:43 PM
I’m thinking of putting some small river craft together for Oathmark.
28mm human or dwarf, not yet decided?

I’m looking for ideas, for small bolt throwers and maybe boats?
I already have some old resin models which may do.

In Oathmark a small boat has 3 crew and a single unit (in my case I’m thinking a bolt thrower with 3 crew)
I imagine my boat will have an oarsman and two guys punting, a bit like a Venetian gondola.

I’m posting a picture of one of my boats and a resin catapult from Grendal which is er.. too big!

There is Warlord's Roman onager. Perhaps that would fit?

Or maybe the scorpion or ballista?

Games of War do a jolly boat and a long boat.

Making your own boats of a similar design to the one you showed isn't difficult. Foamcore is easiest to bend to the desired shape, but balsa will work too.

Are you talking about placing light siege engines on the boats? If so, some sort of light ballista is probably your best bet. I would think the strain of firing a catapult would be too much for small boats to survive.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion.
Light ballista for the boats!

I’m thinking this one from gripping beast, with human Oathmark head swop?
Or a Dwarf crew, can’t decide which way to go, human or Dwarf.

I have a handful of the "Games of War' resin boats and they've been excellent.  Only use them on occasion - but nice little products.  Bought mine maybe eight years back.

If you want a more scale fitting catapult, the one that WizKids released in their unpainted line is really well done and, normally, $5 for it.

For a good crew for one, well, I'm still looking for some good crews that work well.

Alternatives Armies have an orc bolt thrower which you can buy without the orc crew for a fiver

If you decide to dwarves the old grenadier dwarf giant crossbow is available from Forlorn Games

I cannot help on the weapons front, but Sarissa have some potentially useful craft.

The search is a bit broad, but there are only 14 items.

The WizKids ones should be, can't remember if they're Nolzur's or Deep Cuts (Which are the same thing, but Nolzur's is specifically using the D&D license while Deep Cuts seems to be a mix of Pathfinder and generics.
