Title: GW's 'How To Build Wargame Terrain' books
Post by: Mr. White on 28 October 2020, 04:03:57 PM
I recall these books back in the day. i think there were maybe two?

Anyway, are they any good? i've not done too much scratch building, but am considering it and tbh reference a book is much more preferable to me than watching a youtube video.

So, anyone have thoughts on the value of these books? What's the difference between the blue and the red book? They seem fairly cheap on the 'Bay.

I have had the loan of several of them.
I think they are very good value if you are starting into building your own scenery.
May I suggest you buy one, that covers what you intend to do first, as a tester.
If you like it you can buy others.

They're both solid books, but admittedly all of that stuff is on YouTube now from a number of excellent terrain makers, etc.  It's superb for new gamers though as it has a lot of stuff that older gamers take for granted.

I have the original red one - didn't realise they'd done one after that.

The terrain book by Mel the terrain guy is at the printers, so should be in stores at some point. I backed the KS so it will be nice to finally see it - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1560579763/terrain-essentials/posts/2993796

It could be worth checking out, even in pdf format

I would buy a hard copy if available.

I have the red one.  It's ok, but there's nothing really groundbreaking in it.
Everything in there you can find on the net, or even on this site, very easily.

If their cheap, then it can't hurt anything.  But I wouldn't go out of my way for them.

Well I have the red one also, from when I originally brought it, I still prefer reading from a book than a screen and when I got it, the internet was still a bit in the future, at least for me  lol lol lol

Book better than screen go for it, if you want

i just ordered a copy of the blue book fairly cheap. looking forward to flipping through some old school techniques. never really built too much terrain on my own, so it's gonna be new to me. ;)

Been waiting on this one for a while. I'm glad his health finally took a turn for the better. I was really worried about Mel for a bit there.

If you don't know, his TheTerrainTutor channel on Youtube is great.

My red one is dated 1996.

When a GW book was £8...

My blue one is 2003.

Thank you for reminding me of them.

They have not dated as badly as some books (no spray painting pine cones green).

Pulled out the blue book. Still bemused by the full citadel paint range in the back cover of 48 paints 10 inks and 8 metalics.

Oh yes, and with sane names.
