I thought I already had a thread going for this.
Early medieval Britain, roughly between 400 and 600AD has been one of my longest running wargames passions. I started a Saxon army about 25 years ago and every now and again I will add to it. Since my painting ability has improved so much over that time, some of the older paintjobs are embarrassingly rough. :-I
So, I have recently jump started the project again and decided to focus on the end of the 6thC and the beginning of the 7thC using the shenanigans of Penda of Mercia and Cadwallon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd as the inspiration. I figure building up a Welsh contingent as well, they can be either allies of or enemies to my Saxons.
So, here are some recent additions.

Very nice. Gripping Beast figures? Have you hand-painted the shields or used decals?
Regards.

Oops, forgot to say; yes, Gripping Beast.
And thanks. All shields are hand painted.

Looking good! Who are they going to fight?

Very nice work Ragnar 8)
I painted up a load of them for Gripping Beast and the Age of Arthur Warhammer Ancient Battles supplement and those Soapy sculpts do paint up really well!
-
Excellent paintjobs Rags! Be proud of them and lead them from victory to victory soon!
-
Cheers guys.
@Atheling, the Age of Arthur supplement is my absolute favourite . Thinking of revisiting WAB for these troops.

Very nice painting, I like them! :-*

Thankyou Patrice.

Ragnar,
do you have The WAB age of Arthur supplement?
If you don't have a copy then I would seriously think about picking one up. They're still available if you look around the net every now and again.
The eye candy is astounding ( ;) ) and the info and history has a nice balanced vie of Sub Roman Britain without getting into comp0licated arguments. Not that some of the arguments aren't valid, the book just avoids any unnecessary fog.

I do have a copy Atheling, hence it has been my favourite ever since. Agreed about the eye candy but also, the potted history is very informative without, as you say, getting into complicated arguments.
Edited for missing word 'say'

It is by far my favourite WAB book. The lists are as balanced as they possibly could be. I've been lucky enough (going back a few years now!) to attend a couple of campaign days/weekends which were always a real pleasure as well as being a very good laugh. 8)
I'm tempted to try and put on AoA WAB campaign weekend somewhere in the midlands (UK) when all the craziness is over. I'm not sure how many would attend but it might well be worth looking into :)

I used to read about these with great envy...
If you ever do host another one, I demand to see the rules and campaign layout etc.

If it happens, there will be plenty of photo's posted. It might be a bit of an undertaking though, as many of those WAB armies will have been rebased for other rule sets at this point. We shall see :)

Missed this question. As in the original post, these Welsh will fight with or against Early Saxons.
And thanks!

Added some Saxons to the army. Gripping Beast and Musketeer/Footsore.

Ragnar, lovely work. I have a big early Saxon army composed of Gripping Beast and Footsore figures. It doesn't get on the table much but I am planning my little gaming group's "traditional" New Year's Eve game to be a Romano-British vs Saxon game. Either face-to-face or via Zoom depending on the COVID situation.

Good work on the figures. If this is your historical period of choice, I would suggest to look into "Dux Britanniarum" by Too Fat Lardies. Great game!
-
Beautifully done! Great brushwork!

Lovely work Ragnar 8)

Dunno how I’ve missed these up to now - fine work! Especially enjoying the hand painted shield designs and the rawhide shield edging - lovely details. I agree that the 7th century is absolutely fascinating and it looks like I’m coming back to it too. :)

Thanks peeps. :)
@SJWi; hopefully, you'll take some photos to show us
@James Morris; excellent! I'll be looking forward to seeing your photos.
