Title: Deep One Hybrid sculpts (updated 7th Sept)
Post by: blackstone on August 19, 2009, 12:47:28 PM
Here are two pictures of some Deep One Hybrids I sculpted recently. I'd be interested to know what people think. I might look into getting them cast at some point, or selling the greens if a company is interested in casting them.

cheers..

I am afraid the subject is of no use to me but I am sure loads of people here would love them.
You really need to get someone to cast them.

Will throw our hat into the interest pool, would be interested in buying the greens or producing these under license as we do with little green man and doppalganger usa.
We have sent a pm a couple of hours ago, but as others have done this via the news item we have done the same  :D
Thanks and great sculpts

Thanks everyone for all the comments. Really pleased with how they've been received.  I do have more planned too.. :)

Here's a scale comparison as requested. I'll be able to take some better pictures tomorrow. I've placed the greens on bases to try and get the feet all on the same level.  They're next to some Cold War zombies and Artizan Thrilling tales figures....

I'll reply to all the PM's shortly..

Hell yeah!!!!

(oh no not another genre to start collecting, oops!).

Whoever gets them , (and I hope it's Jo and Ben etc... at Blackcat) add slotta tags to the minis not nasty solid bases that have to be cut away. Keeps everyone happy then as you want to coin mount? Just cut the tag off, much easier that cutting a integral base.

Simples!  :D

You'll still have to hack em about Bungle, at least with a tab you can remove it cleanly if you want to coin mount as already said.

What can't they fit on?
Title: Re: Deep One Hybrid sculpts

What can't they fit on?

They can, but not flush, you have to hack away at the bases if you don't like a lump in the middle of your slotta (oooo err) or if like me you use a lot of resin scenic bases.

Less hassle with a tab and if the plastic base phobics don't like it then it's much easier for them to remove and base on a coin, washer or beermat as they see fit.

At the end of the day I really don't give a flying F :-X K as long as they are cast!

;)

Personal preferences.

I like gaming with my figures, and a join over the largest area possible between the figure and base gives the strongest join. Which allows for the roughest accidental handling.

soles of feet to a penny just doesn't hold well enough, which is why I hate tabs, you end up having to use plastic podiums for the figures to stand on or faff around trimming and filing and gluing to only get a poor hold to the base.

Resin display bases are not as strong for gaming either as a base or the hold to the figure.

But they can look very pretty... so its a choice between practicality for gaming, and  ease of conversion for the resin base user.... one of many different types of base... resin/displaybase, slotta, washer or penny, square of plasticard to name a few. The only type that it is harder to use on is the resin/display type...

don't you always flock your slottas?... a good thin base isn't noticable under flock

I pefare flat bases as I solder my figures to ether a penny or two pence peace, but if they sloted just need cut slot of and still solder there tiny feet to a penny or even to a brass washer give them hieght then to a penny, all that said only if they are made out of pewter

I encourage you to express your opinion.  What I was objecting to was your seeming suggestion that everyone shares it.  In fact, slotta bases do not "keep everyone happy".  They make me, for one, very sad.   :(

Sorry for my apparent rudeness though.  :)

No I was just expressing my opinion, but....awwww that's ok I love you too!

 :D

To keep everyone happy the frother's figure sculpting comp packs that have slottas also come with little mini metal bases that give the appearance of a solid base.

Maybe the source of those could be located?

True mate very true, I use jed's urban bases and Ian's bases and toppers for gaming no issue so far.

With regards to gravelling or flock bases I just don't like the 'hump' it gives and it gives me the hump! :D

I have recently tended to cut the solids off if it looks like its able to be done without damaging the mini, and on other stuff (TAG and Copplestone) I've actually countersunk the solid base into the slotta, that looks great too.

Anyway all we all want is them cast up so we're all agreed on one thing.

Cheers mate

The Commander

I'd like a set of these too :)

As far as bases go, I agree with Bungle, small integral bases are best for me so feel free to keep the greens as they are. Oh, and could you sell them to Black Cat as they're nearer and will keep my postage rates down.
Oh, and er, make more, lots more :D

NICE!!!! A lickle cuddle Cthulhu on a plith.

;)

MORE I say MORE!!!

Things I'd like to see:

Hybrid 'doctor' thick rimmed round specs making the eyes look even more bulbous.
More hunchback styled hybrids under heavy coats.
maybe a pure breed hidden beneath ragged clothes?
A few zombie ones would be a giggle too, (re-animated).
Maybe one with a fedora, leather jacket and whip, about to swop the little statue for a bag of sand :D

Some elder signs carved on a wooden signpost: (kinda like the wonky signs you see in hick'sville)

If you order from me, about $12 to ship a small parcel to the UK (I can get about 6-8 packs in the parcel if you want to go in with others). We are also stocked in Germany at:

Battlefield Berlin
MiniaturicuM

Unfortunately, our books are distributed by Northstar in the UK, but not miniatures. The miniatures used to be stocked by Tabletop Games, but I have not heard from them in over a year and repeated attempts to get through are met with no response. If you know a distributor who would be interested in stocking them, or even a store, have them get in touch with me.

Leisure Games were getting their stock from Tabletop I believe. I have never dealt directly with them.

But, as the consumers, you should always feel free to "ask" the retailer to get in a product for you. I would be happy to deal with Leisure Games directly.

You should. They seem friendly and easy to deal with and I believe their mail order business is quite large. I've also dealt with TableTop Games, oh how disappointing.

Oh, yes please! My pulp sailors need Deep Ones to fight, and my heroes (and villains!) need to know how to go insane under the 45A system!

Didn't we hear rumours of one of the later Thrilling Expedition Quarterlies being tentacle-flavoured?

Shipping promo currently ongoing is $15 flat rate international shipping.

Of course ordering one pack is less but I wouldn't advise that though as the percentage for shipping is then very high.

Yes this is something I thought about when sculpting these. For the RPG my instint would be that they are generally unarmed, as they would be if they were just hanging around in a town. This would be more in keeping with the story too.  But I know for wargaming / skirmishing people prefer the figures to have weapons, a least that's what I think. It would be interesting to know what other people felt about this.

It would be interesting to know what other people felt about this.

cheers

All of the above!  And stop typing your wasting valuable sculpting time!

Congrats to Brigade Games - I'll second the comment that Lon is 'good people', I've had some excellent experiences dealing with Brigade.

I look forward to getting a set of these figures!

I'm trying to orchestrate a Strange Aeons Innsmouth-ish event around Halloween and it sounds like the timing on these figs just might work! Very excited.

Here's a photo of a couple of the new figures I've been working on. Guy on the left is smoking a cigar, will probably end up with a shotgun or rifle. One on the right is a priest/sorceror from the Order of Dagon. He's very far gone in his transformation... close to a full Deep One :)

comments welcomed   ;D

I hope these will also be available through Brigade Games. Very nice work. I to would like to see more figures nearer to the Human side of transformation.
A few suggestions:
The Innsmouth bus driver
Hotel keeper
Tramp
Fishermen

just fantastic,

i like 'em both, up til now the only hybrids available were the old metal magic ones ( now EM-4) and these are way better,

although it has inspired me to paint up my old ones in preparation
for meeting their new friends when these are out :D

Fantastic! You must be Dagon's long lost child if you have these talents. I really, really like your style and the faces are superb. Yes, I will buy all of these for Cosmic Horror. Terrific stuff!

The new ones are great - a very cool little Cthulhu statue that fishy freak is waving around!

Any chance of that statue on it's own, or on a plinth?

Seeing the picture withou reading the text my first thought was: "How excellently disturbing with a fishman gimp *). Clever, that sculptor..."

*) Sorry, I am not quite sure how an offensive term that is.

Heck, I'd like to be able to get that little mini 'thulhu statue all by itself - that's a great little piece for terrain or an objective marker, or just as a decoration for something else.

I think the furor surrounding these minis proves there is a very viable market for some update Lovecraftian minis....

Magnificent!! Ooooo.... I'd buy them up in a heartbeat!

I was blow away at this pic...

There was a spot on my monitor that made it look like the deep one on the left had a drop of something coming out of his stump.
Cleaned screen... problem resolved.
Still looked pretty cool though.
