Title: 13th century painted helms
Post by: bluewillow on 17 November 2020, 08:17:29 AM
I have piped an article up on my blog about painted 13th century helms, predominantly for the second barons war period. As I move back to complete this period next year, I hope you find it helpful.

Superb stuff  Matt  8)

It's always been a bit of a none question as far as I was concerned. My reasoning is this, with heraldry taking a firm root as the 12th C rolled on it was in the interests of a combatant of note to make themselves as visible and as an obvious target for ransom if they were defeated in combat. Thus they might have a hefty bill to pay but they would live.

Also, the Medieval period, for those who could afford it, was very colourful.. Ostentatious shows of wealth were common and garish colour simply made the wealth thing more obvious. Of course, it is unlikely that they would have seen this as garish.

Very useful, thanks. I’m looking forward to doing some of these next year.

This just may prompt me to do some in my next collection of knights. ;)

I like to paint the helmets on the High Middle Age figures.  I could use a historical argument but the real reason I do it. is that it makes them look more like my Timpo swoppet knights.

Without doubt the best reason there could be. :)
