Title: All military operations have been suspended!!!
Post by: Harry Faversham on November 19, 2020, 12:17:49 PM
Good job I've got all the tackle for the Crimbo wargame sorted as my lad's slipped Daddio a right crippler! He's bought a kind of repro ancient looking journal/diary thingy, and as a Crimbo prezzie for my Grandson, Daddio will fill it full of Viking Sagas and copious illustrations. Deflection tactics by educating him that Vikings didn't write their crap down, the saga thingys were aural, got me nowhere fast.
Where, in Odin's name, will I glean inspiration for this one... thinking more Noggin the Nog than Ragnar and Lagertha!!!???

???

You can get some bookmagzine things from Smiths, if you can still find one open in Lockdown. Has a mix of historical overview background and lots of pictures and illsutrations. Has one covering the Sagas for more mythic than history and covering general society and 1066. Otherwise the Kwaransky publications prob worth picking up that focuses on the Vikings.

Either way should give lots of Viking eye candy for inspiration.

how about a bit of  an aural/visual primer ?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks1-english-viking-sagas/zkyqd6f

Some reading without loads of extra adverts popups etc , although to stick to theme you might want to get your boy to read it out loud to you so its proper aural..

Specifically

also some rune stuff

Should give ideas regards child's point of view - and how to start with something, but I don't know your grandsons age, still it might help!

Will be interesting to find out what you come up with!

Maybe "Harry's Saga"

For inspiration, there are a few kids versions of Beowulf kicking around.

Tolkien's kids stories are also worth a lookie, Farmer Giles perhaps.....Anything with Giants and Dragons, Runes and Trolls would inspire I'm sure.

Read the actual sagas, surely? There are plenty readily available.
