The sculpts that got me hooked on miniature war gaming that I finally getting to paint all these years later. Still full of character and I have plenty more to paint up over the coming months.
More pictures and words over on my blog: https://cruciumgiger.blogspot.com/2020/11/warhammer-40k-black-legion.html

Nice work
-
Thanks
-
Nice.
Are they the fully multi-part multi-pose plastics?
-
No these are metal bodies with plastic arms/weapons/shoulder pads and back packs.
I will be working on the first full plastic kit after the next batch of metals.

Cool, thanks.

It's been a while but I've finished up the next batch of 2nd Ed Chaos Marines.

I've finished up the next squad, which are made from the 1997 plastic kit. As usual more images and word over on my blog:

Ah, these are great, and take me back to the first time Chaos Space Marines really caught my eye - I still have a soft spot for the Night Lords as a result of the original studio paintjobs, especially the champion waving his chainsword in the air.
As somebody with BL army as well though, I have to say these are really well done! :)
Also, in case its useful, the later edition of 3E/4E plastic miniature arms are pretty compatible with the older minis. You might find them helpful for getting a few different or better poses, especially for the CC weapon armed marines, and the shoulder pads are also pretty universal if you find yourself short of the originals.
-
Cheers! These were the last batch of standard chaos marines I had to do and they were eBay rescues and came built (including some over zealous plastic glue joins) so I don't need to go scouting for parts anymore.
-
Some added punch added to the Black Legion with the Heavy Weapon miniatures, more pictures up on my blog:

-
I've had to sneak into the year 2000 for this next mini but it was the first unnamed Chaos Marine Lord released and still fits in nicely with the rest of the army.

Nice job! Fantastic looking force.

Back to the 90's with Fabius Bile's Enhanced Marines from 1998.

Very nicely painted!
I always had a bit of a mixed appreciation for Fab Bill's Übermensch figures. I liked their weirdly-sculpted faces a lot, but found the rest of the models really awkward in terms of pose and details.
I was also wondering if you base all your models the same way, or if you vary them to suit each army? I was thinking that a bit more colour and interest added to the bases would really help the strong black and gold scheme of the models stand out even more. :)
Out of curiosity, which edition(s) of the game do you play with these?
-
Cheers,
They do have some odd proportions but that's what you get when you allow Fabulous Bill to tinker with you :D
I've based all my Chaos Marines in a dead moonscape style (a bit of colour is washed out in the pictures but I think they go well with the Black Legion scheme) and generally base each army differently.
As for games it will be mainly be Grimdark Future and good old 2nd Ed.

Yes, that's quite true I suppose! lol

Ah, cool. I was thinking either some deep rusty orange-red or a fairly bright turquoise blue, thinned and splodged on in random patches on the bases, would help "lift" the desaturated scheme whilst also still looking quite Chaotic/alien. :)

Good old 2nd Ed! It can be a bit of a rules quagmire, and it's often not that quick to play either, but it's a lot of fun and produces memorable games. :P
Are you planning on adding any of the old 2E cult marines to the force? I imagine these would look rather striking if combined with the Black Legion colour scheme.
-
I have some (3rd Ed) Noise Marines up on the paint table next and then some Rogue Trader terminators.
-
Hmm, I don't think I'm familiar with those Noise Marines... Do you have any pictures of them please? ???
I remember the famous late RT-era one with the guitar, the 2nd edition (https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/8/8b/NoiseMarines2nd.jpg) ones, and the 4th edition (https://heresyandheroes.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/noise-marines.jpg) (and still current!) ones. (...And yes, the recent plastic reincarnation of the RT guitar one, and the Forgeworld Kakophoni models too).
-
Dear old Fabulous Bile :D
I nearly brought the new model for him, and I may still yet :o
But like you I plan on using Grimdark Future from OPR, but also using 3rd edition 40K instead of 2nd!
Good going with them old minis, keep up the good work.

Ah 2nd Ed they are then (I thought they were 3rd?)
-
Ah, hehe, I thought there was an edition of models I'd missed, and was looking forward to seeing them! lol
Yeah, the first squad models were released for 2nd Edition, however as the Chaos codex was relatively late (1996?) in the release sequence, and the models weren't made until a while after the codex was out, there are no pictures of them in the book. Nor were they used in any battle reports of the era (that I can remember!), so there are reasonably few pictures of them at that time.
They were however pictured in the 3rd Edition Chaos Space Marine Codex (the first one, anyway), and interestingly that was one of the earliest Codices released for the new edition (probably because the Chaos models at that time were still relatively "new").
Aaaaanyway, apologies for all the waffle!
-
Actually very informative, I'd dropped out of the hobby by that stage so just new they were released around '98
-
It might have taken a while to get these chaps finished but I got there in the end (thanks to Returnal)!
These are the 1998 Chaos Marine Raptors, another eBay rescue so I had to use some more modern parts here and there but they still fit in with the rest of my old school force.

I've finished up the Noise Marines (in good time for a change) and really enjoyed painting them.

I've been saving this unit for last as it's the one I've most been looking forward to painting, the Rogue Trader Chaos Terminators.
I really enjoyed painting these and you can read more from me and see more images over on my blog:

I do think its a damn shame GW never did more with Fabulous Bills new men, so many unusual and weird archetypes you can make. Spider legs, no head, etc etc
-
You really could do anything with them.
-
Time to add some heft to the army!
More from me on my blog, https://cruciumgiger.blogspot.com/2021/08/warhammer-40k-chaos-dreadnought.html

Lovely work on those. I do hope there is still more to come.

Thanks and there is a but more to come, speaking of which...
I've finished up my Chaos Marine Sorcerer, always loved this sculpt as it's oozing with character:
https://cruciumgiger.blogspot.com/2021/08/warhammer-40k-chaos-marine-sorcerer.html
-
Neat work on those - and good choice of colours for the detailing too.
-
Love that dread!! The sorcerer is great also
-
Cracking job on him, never knew what colours to paint him.
Thanks for the inspiration :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks all. Nothing too exciting next, just a couple of modern Rhinos (lads have to get about somehow).
-
Been a while since I stopped by here, and I'm delighted to see your progress on these - lots of old chunky metal miniatures! Lovely! :-*
Will you be doing any more vehicles besides the Dread and upcoming Rhino? A few bikes or a Predator perhaps? :)

I'm actually running out of old school miniatures, the rhinos are modern but I do have Abaddon, Fabius and Kharn to do.
-
Will the Rhino be modified at all to give it a more classic appearance, or will it just be stock?
I don't think it would be too hard to add the front doors, round side hatches, and exposed exhausts... but it does mean more work, obviously!
Other old models to maybe consider tracking down and adding to the project:
- The metal-plastic 2E Chaos Predator tank
- Typhus (Released after 2E, yes, but not by much and still a stone-cold Jes classic!)
- Doom Rider (Very silly... Extremely silly in fact! But also very much in the 2E style of model).
- Chaos bikes (You can still buy these new... for now!
-
They're pretty much stock with some Chaos modification and one has the Forgeworld doors (I also have a Forgeworld Predator for the Black Legion which mimics the old Rogue Trader style - it's badly warped though but will still do the job).
I do have a Predator (and two original Rhinos) in the wings along with Typhus but they're for my Rogue Trader/2nd Ed Death Guard Force ;)
-
A great little project you have going here.
Any chance of a picture of all of the painted figures together?
-
Thanks, I will be doing once I've finished off the last couple of characters.
-
Here are the modern Rhino's, what can you say except they get the job done :D
Next up we're back to 2nd Ed and a rather important character.

The time finally came to paint up the big man himself, really enjoyed painting him as this is my original miniature from 2nd Edition.
More words and pictures over on my blog (including an image of his original paint job).

Time for another character, one which I really enjoyed painting up.
"In purple I'm stunning"

Ah good ol' Bill, looking Fabulous! ;)
-
Nice work!
-
Thanks!
Next up is some additional firepower in the form of a Deimos Predator Executioner. I've added some of the etched brass markings along with some spares from the Chaos vehicle sprue:
https://cruciumgiger.blogspot.com/2021/10/warhammer-40k-chaos-predator.html
-
Huh. I take it the vulture-head gun barrels came off the Chaos vehicle sprue? I had a bunch of them in my bits box from a trade and never knew where they were from. Wound up using them for the prows on a bunch of Chaos cruisers back when Battlefleet Gothic first came out.

That's correct, along with all sorts of handy bits and pieces.
-
Very nice, that 'flat' black you have achieved is very effecctive.

Yup, quite clearly Black Legion. :) Two things stand out to me: Seeing Abbadon painted takes me back. And I really like how you've dealt with the liquids in Fabius Bile's (in the German version the called him Fabius Gallus. Which kinda makes sense, because Bile = Galle in German, but it also makes him either a rooster or a Gaul. :D ) round container things there. You didn't go for "red liquid, blue-ish body of glass" on his injector, which always looks a bit weird at second glance. The two-reds-variant I really like. I also like the cloudy look in the vials on his back.
-
Lovely looking Predator Giger! I'm glad you managed to find a "retro-style" one to fit with your classic models. :)
I must say that I have really enjoyed seeing all your BL models here, and I often find myself looking through your pictures and thinking about my own (unpainted) BL collection... But picking that up again would then distract me from all my other current distrac-er, projects. ;)
