La República de Banano is a small island nation situated somewhere within Central America. Since its independence from Spain in 1927, it has been repeatedly invaded by South, North and Central American countries, and as a result has see-sawed from Communist to Capitalist dictatorships. It is in a constant state of turmoil, with various ruling families, not to mention Communist rebels, drug lords and the military, all vying for power. In 1971 the island was invaded by the USA, who installed the current ‘democratic’ regime as a puppet government.
The island's nearest neighbour is the equally tiny República de Naranjas, which was invaded and taken over by Cuba in 1969, resulting in a communist dictatorship. Due to a diplomatic incident in 1972 in which the two nations simultaneously invaded one another over a mixed box of Bananas/Oranges, relations with the República de Naranjas were recently described by one Bananian minister as “really, really, really bad”.
So there's the background, I'm ready to have some crazy adventures in 1970's South America!
Only one picture at the moment, the glorious troops of the República de Banano, armed with weapons and equipment from the USA;
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc183/answeris42/Models/South%20America/DSCF8327.jpg)
Baker Company ARVN (they look rather Asian, but lets not allow that to distract us, eh?) and M113's.
I'm going to try to keep this project under 40 models strong, but please, don't quote me on that...
Hopfully more pictures tomorrow.
Comments etc welcome.
-
Damn good to see you starting anouther progect that will engulf your life!

Great background lol
may i suggest mongrel's syrians as opponents..
come to think of it, i may have done that already ???

Thanks!
Do you have any pictures of Mongrel's Syrians? The images on their site don't seem to be working...
-
haven't got any pics myself

a few there, (pack 1 &2 i think) might have to join up..
-
There was a song by Les Luthiers about the República de Banania. "Do not think of me as a dictator - that's an order!" :)
-
so, what's happening the with the "Macedonia de frutas" next?
I guess the Naraneros will have soviet equipment?
and there will be some notorious C-team envolved?

Yes, and hopefully yes. I'm thinking of Eureka's 'Musorian' infantry for the República de Naranjas. It all depends on money, time etc, though...
Painted the first 8-man squad today, and even managed to take some half decent photos (!):

The colours are a little dull, but they are just grunts, after all. I usually use vast amounts of ink on my figures, but I've tried to get by with only inking the skin and a few bits of equipment on these, the results of which I'm fairly pleased with.
I doubt I'll have anything more painted tommorow, but should have an M113 done by Tuesday/Wednesday.
Thanks for looking!

nice
aren't they a little bit fair for the geography?

You mean the skin tones? I imagine the island as a sort of 'melting pot' of various cultures and peoples. I've painted two with white skin, three black (although perhaps I should've done more of these), and three are an attempt at Hispanic skin tones, but perhaps did them too light (although they don't show too well in the photo).
I used the following photo of Cuban military personal as a guide for the skin tones;
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc183/answeris42/Random%20stuff/Cuban_soldiers_news_02122006_0021.jpg)
-
doesn't matter
but too fair indeed - remeber that even "white" soldiers would acquire a tan
remeber that melting pot means interbreeding
in 100 years the "white" skin tone will be extinct and you will recognise white racists as the only ones being white
interesting thing I stumbled upon in Sudan:
the "arab" ethnicities claim to be not "black" and look down on the southern sudanese as being "black" and inferior - although to us all would look african anyway
I guess it is the same with the latin americans who claim spanish ancestry, though they are much darker then spanish
so it sems "black" and "white" is more of an attitude for discrimination
-
An extra go with fleshwash on the hispanics wouldn't be amiss, but i like what i'm seeing =)

Los Militares de Banano was formed in 1936, three months after the tenth armed invasion of the island (the nation has been invaded 34 times since its independence). Despite the fact that the Republic spends on average 48% of its annual income on the military, only three invasion attempts on the island have ever been successfully repulsed, and two of those victories were due to vast amounts of ineptitude on the part of the invaders (Panama and Scotland respectively).
Up until the American invasion of 1971, the Bananian military had been armed with outdated World War 2 era weapons and equipment, supplemented by a few eighth-hand Soviet T-55s. However, during the disastrous defence operations practically everything of military value was lost, when the troops deployed in the Northern defence zone mistook the troops in the South for US airborne infantry, despite the fact that America had not yet declared war.
Following the US takeover, the military was reorganised and reequipped with American weapons, and can now boast (on paper at least) three full divisions of mechanised infantry, although this number drops to roughly half a division every Thursday afternoon, for what have been described as ‘tax reasons’.
Finished these today, two M113 APCs (sorry about the awful photos, I'll try to do some better ones at a later date);

I’m quite happy with them, considering I’ve never tried vehicles with camouflage before.
-
Nice concept, I'm sure you'll have many happy hours spent gaming it! Certainly makes a change from Vietnam. :)
On the subject of southern American demographics it doesn't do to generalise. Cuba has a very large percentage of Whites (i.e. Spanish) in comparison with the rest of the region and perhaps the lowest percentage of Blacks. Mixed race is the second most predominate racial mix, almost double the number of Blacks, but less than half the number of Whites. The Dominican Republic is predominantly mixed race, with roughly equal numbers of Blacks and Whites, who form 27% of the population between them. Haiti on the other hand is 95% Black. It gets more complicated when you look at mainland countries, Venezuela for example has 60% of its population as Mestizo- mixed race drawn from Amerindian and European stock, the remainder being White.
Fair enough, these are relative terms as there is a great difference in skin tones between Northern Europeans and Southern Europeans, like the Spanish and Portuguese who colonised the area. Nevertheless there are still observable differences between individuals despite nearly 500 years of co-habitation in a 'melting pot'. As for Whites tanning... all races go darker when exposed to sunlight over a period of time.
-
48% only ??
no wonder they are being overrun

Nice tracks :D
reading the background is so funny, i nearly spat coffee on my screen now lol lol lol
Please make a wikipediastyle article for this later :)

Heh, thanks. It's not that I paint quickly, rather that I have very little else to do as it's the school holidays, and is raining.

Next to the painting table are a few communist guerrillas, and then, well, I've yet to buy anything else, so we'll have to wait and see. Exciting, eh?

Good Work. You must play me. Soon!

Alberto Fernandez is this week’s leader of the revolution. He obtained the position last Wednesday, after the previous leader tragically tripped and fell on his knife sixteen times, before plunging down a well. Although he calls himself a Communist, he is not really sure what this means, and actually voted Conservative in the last (rigged) election. He is not likely to hold the position for very long, as leaders of the revolution do not generally survive for more than a month at most, due to infighting.
The Revolution itself has now been underway for twenty three years, although it has been going downhill somewhat for the last ten or so. The República de Naranjas occasionally sends weapons and equipment, although these shipments have dried up recently, as the communist government has realised the true extent of the Revolution’s ineptitude. As a result of this, the Revolution was recently registered as a charity, and enjoys a modest intake of funds from kind benefactors, as well as a small government grant. Because of the massive amount of infighting within its ranks, the Revolution only conducts partisan warfare a few times a year, and is no longer perceived as a real threat by the authorities. The last successful operation by the Revolution resulted in thirty three of its members dead and fifty six wounded, but was rewarded with the capture of 376 bananas and a small dog, named Rover.

Terrible pictures, I'm afraid.

No.42, your background continues to entertain.
Mr.Marx
-
Really liking your background, it sounds like it would fit in really well with the Golgo Island stuff. Maybe the Naranjanas are planning to launch an invasion of Golgo once they get their own military in order?
Although obviously not on a Thursday afternoon. lol
Oh, and the rebels being given a government grant for registering as a charity is an inspired idea, I love it - and find it disturbingly believable at the same time...

Thanks for the replies chaps!
One more today, a bodyguard for Alberto Fernandez;
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc183/answeris42/Models/South%20America/DSCF8498.jpg)
Also MoFo. These figures are noticeably larger than Baker Company's, but I guess that's just something we'll all have to live with...
Oops, just noticed I forgot to paint the rifle's grip (or is it called a handle? the bit he's holding, anyway).
-
He looks ideally suited for the role of bodyguard (and future leader of the revolution), in that he appears ready to push his boss down that well....
lol
Nice work A42
-
I think grip is appropriate

Finished the last bodyguard;

The MoFo & Baker Co. figures should be about the right size - it could be that the Baker ARVN are a bit smaller as they are supposed to be Asians?

Yes, this is what I thought. It shouldn't matter too much, though.
On the same note, anyone know how The Assault Group's figures scale next to Baker/MoFo?
Many thanks for the comments thus far. You're all either very kind, or very polite...
-
Once again nice work on these figures. I can see your painting improving with each new post you made… not that it were bad to start with ;)
-
Sorry for the poor pictures, bt here are some scale comparions between Baker Co, MoFo & TAG:

Figures either side of right hand 'Nam Era Marine Baker Co MArine. Other Africans from MoFo
No idea if its clearer or not in this one:

Again, the Guy with the FNMAG & the guy with the Garand are TAG
IMO they mix fine once based and on the table top...
Good work on the project so far :D - Really looking forward to seeing how it progresses!
-
@Calimero; Thanks, although I feel it’s more that my camera skills have improved than my painting...
@v_lazy_dragon; Those are great, thankee very much.
Four commie rebels;

The population of La República de Banano can be divided roughly into two categories; the rich, who own 98.7% of the countries land and wealth, and everyone else. However, such is the segregation on the island that these two groups almost never meet. The rich enjoy one of the highest standards of living anywhere, whereas the poor live in abject poverty.
The average family in La República de Banano earns just over 1740000 Bananian Pesos a month, which equates to roughly 16 United States Dollars. This fantastically low income results in some of the poorest levels of housing on the planet, with only one in every thirty buildings across the whole country having access to electricity.
Very little has ever been done to try to change the status quo as far as living conditions are concerned, with the latest government housing scheme merely resulting in the demolition of two hundred shacks, to be replaced with eight tennis courts, three swimming pools, a golf course and one very large barbed-wire fence.
To quote the government tourist board;
“Come to the beautiful República de Banano, where the weather is perfect, the locals are friendly and the word ‘poverty’ is unknown*!
*At least, to anyone worth speaking of."
Two prime examples of quality Bananian workmanship;

of course not
it would be "pobresa" they know

Pablo Raúl Bernardo became president a year after the US invasion. He was elected with a stunning 96% of the vote, but oddly enough no one has yet to question the result. An amiable and friendly fellow, he uses his smiles and charm to hide the fact that he is completely corrupt and totally inept, with his only real aim being to loot the country for every penny its worth. He is a great believer in the ability to rule using only one’s hat, and has a vicious hatred of anyone suggesting that he really wields no power, and is merely a pawn of the Americans. Since the election he has reorganised the voting system, slashing the number of voters from over 20,000 to one; a Mr. P.R. Bernardo.
El Presidente;
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc183/answeris42/Models/South%20America/DSCF8534.jpg)(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc183/answeris42/Models/South%20America/DSCF8537.jpg)
The figure is from BTD (and arrived within 6 months of me ordering it!), and is about a head taller than any of my other figures, but seeing as he's a character it shouldn't make much difference.

A lovely take on the general.
It is also worth checking out the Mongrel miniatures Syrians and Afghan regulars for Gov`t/rebel troops, possibly some other their Lebanese too
http://www.mongrelminis.co.uk/
for some reasons not all pictures seem to be showing up :( they also have congo mercenaries whihc might be a nice mix.

Thank you. I intend to use some of Mongrel's African mercs, and may consider using the Syrians if I knew what they looked like! As of yet I can find no pictures of them.
On a different note, I just dug up this old (ish) thread, that first gave me the Banana republic idea;

Some fantastic stuff there.

Yep have to say that with the change to Pontoonier that the release schedule and lack of contorl over their ranges has gone "tits up" since being handed over form Frank and Crouchie. :-[

Figures are from Foundry, and are okish. Face (the chap in the suit) has a rather comically enlarged jacket, which makes him look like he's got really thick body armour on. The models are also much larger than anything I've painted thus far, but they are, after all, the A-Team, so this can be overlooked.
What are they doing in La República de Banano? Running from a crime they didn't commit...
EDIT; A friend, who knows about such things, has just pointed out that I have painted Murdock's shoes incorrectly. The white circles should be on the inside. This has been repainted. I apologise for any distress this may have coursed.

maybe
but I thing there were some with white curcles on both sides
can't remember though
of course the A-Team has to be there

An assortment of rebels just arrived from Eureka (via Fighting15s). They are rather small, but I've such a mess of different sizes now that it'll hardly make any difference
Five more badly photographed rebels;
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc183/answeris42/Models/South%20America/DSCF8548.jpg)
(Yes, the chap on the end does have ginger hair. Those Scots get everywhere, eh?)
Currently at 33 figures in total, with five more on the painting table. I've a feeling that the 40 figures mark may be a little too low. Lets push it up to 50, ten more can't hurt, right..?
Oh, and I've an armoured car on the way to make things a little more interesting. Watch this space, etc, etc...

A Panhard AML 90 Armoured car, one of many bought third-hand by the Bananian military from a shady chap in Mexico;

Nice work! I really like the armoured car and APCs.

I'm pretty sure we can get a smallish body in tweed jacket and an oversized bearded head to convert

Hi, are you play any game with this?
-
Hi, are you play any game with this?
Hey, Yes, I've played a couple of test games, but am waiting for a few more figures to arrive before I take any pictures. I'm planning on buying a copy of DHC7B's modern supplement at some point, too. At the moment I'm just using a set of (rather bad) home written rules (based on 40k).
-
DHC7B's modern supplement is a very good rule-set, I have this and vietnam suplement. I was thinking to do something similar. If you want I can help you with the list.

This is a really cool project with a great background story. The A-Team really cracked me up...

Hahaha! Love the humour. My favourite scene in "Bananas" is when Wody Alan is told to become a master of camouflage. His camouflage is so good that an enemy soldier pees on him in the jungle!

Haha! wow, I'd almost forgotten about this. It was overtaken by some other projects and got left behind. I only just noticed people have been posting on it since last month...
I've painted a few Soviet infantrymen for use with the rebels as communist paratroopers, amongst other things; I'll post a picture of them next time I'm home.
Thanks for the continued praise, I feel like I've a reputation to maintain now.
How were the Baker Co APCs to put together? I need to get some M113s for my UN troops and I'm undecided between these and TAG
To be honest, I'm not sure I can fully recommend the Baker M113s. Whilst nice figures, they have quite large mould line issues. If you look closely at my photos, you can make out an irregular line running the length of the hull, and it took hours to file it down to just that.
-
I went with the TAG one, expensive but perfectly cast :)

Right! Seeing as I've only 4 other projects on the go at the moment, I think it's about time I did a bit more with this. Well, anyway, I was at a loose end this afternoon, so I figured I'd write some more background...
La República de Naranjas (officially The Glorious Central American People’s Democratic Socialist Soviet Republican Union of Marxist Orange Collectives) was established in 1969 as a puppet of Castro’s Cuba. During its colonial period, the island was at various times ruled by almost every imperial power in the region, finally gaining independence from Andorra in 1897. Like its neighbour, the country has suffered many invasions from local regional powers, including a protracted and bloody conflict with Ecuador between 1947-1958, sparked by the infamous ‘orange squash’ incident, details of which are still much disputed. For the past few years, however, the primary foreign policy aim of the nation’s ruling elite has been the full overthrow of the despotic capitalist regime of the República de Banano. In addition to Cuba, the People’s Republic maintains close ties with the USSR, whose ‘advisors’ constitute a strong faction within the countries’ complex internal power struggles. In practical terms, however, La República de Naranjas and La República de Banano are virtually identical.
And a flag!

I’ll try to post a couple of photos tomorrow, and intend to get some more stuff at Salute; as of yet, I don’t really have enough for a proper game. Exciting, isn't it?

Looking good mate.
lots of projects means you will never go stale....of course, it also probably means you won't finish any of them
lol
-
Clearly La República de Naranjas has a considerable naval presence if it had a protracted and bloody conflict with Ecuador ;)
-
Clearly, Andorra's vast overseas holdings have shrunk much in the last 150 years. ;D lol lol lol
Love what you've done with the background. Looking forward to more.

This is a great project you have going on, love the background story! I'm so glad this was bumped back up again or so many great idea might have been missed.

The events of the Cuban invasion of 1969 differ depending upon whom you ask. The official history, as published by the Naranjan government, tells of a great and glorious rising of the proletariat, sweeping away the corrupt capitalist politicians. The story as told by everyone else, however, follows that the island was seized by the Cubans in the mistaken belief that it contained valuable natural resources, and that the people remained totally apathetic toward the invaders.
Nevertheless, the ruling Communist Party has done its utmost to inspire a sense of socialistic fervour in the populace, with initiatives such as free red flags for the over 60s, and special ’Karl Marx days’, when people are encouraged to dress up as the founding father of Communism. Arguably the most successful method of maintaining the revolution, however, has been the stationing of 2,000 Soviet ‘advisors’ in the country, whose idealism, courage and automatic rifles have proven to be a great inspiration to the nation.
Some badly photographed Russians. Mongrel minis I think; I picked them up on a whim at a Salute a few years ago. Can't say the winter gear suits the Caribbean climate, though:

Oddly the Soviet Troops that went to Cuba in '62 were issued winter gear, so not so far fetched. Apparently they did adapt their fur-lined boots into a kind of UGG sandal and mostly wore civilian clothing for the time they were there.

Believe it or not in tropical Salvador, you can go into a department store like C&A, Renner or Riachuelo and find puffy jackets, sweaters and knee high boots being sold in the women's clothing section. Odd, given that most of the year the temperature range is between 28C and 32C. On rare days in winter it may drop as low as 18C. Who buys these things I'm not sure. Perhaps there is a larger market for the ski slopes of Bariloche than I imagined. Oh well, just say that your Russians are slaves to fashion.

not surprising to see fur hats in the countryside in Asia in summer - think of Afghanistan

This is just too much for me! My belly aches from laughing! Now here's a story I will follow. Wonderful idea!
