Title: Return to The Punic Wars
Post by: sgzleada71 on 12 December 2020, 11:16:18 AM
On returning to miniature painting ~ 5 yrs ago, after many years layoff since childhood,  I did a 2nd Punic war, Battle of Lake Trasimene Diorama.  Since then my knowledge of the period has grown as have my miniature skills so I feel it's time to revisit this most epic period of ancient history.   I thought it  might be nice to share some of the works in progress here and get any tips/ suggestions and other feedback.

This was my effort   a few years ago.   You may note some historical inaccuracies  ie  Lorica Segmentata.  ( Hollywood  error !)   In fact  most of the Romans look post Marian reforms  now I look at them.    Anyhow that's the starting point.   I'm now working on a series of smaller  modular Punic war "brigades" .    Will show progress shots soon.

That is quite the diorama, last time I saw anything like that was at Hamburg’s Tactica show.

Wow, that is really cool! I've thought about trying my hand at dioramas here and there. I always talk myself out of it, due to lack of skill ( :D ) and the fact that, in my head at least, once the minis are part of a diorama, that's where they are, and you can't use them for anything else. But I gotta say, your presentation here is really inspiring!

and from reverse..

I used a new method for me to base.   Glued the figures to the board then made a perimeter border of masking tape.    As it was going to be difficult to get between the legs and soothe out the stands with modeling putty, as I do for single figures, I  tried just pouring in a thin layer of  epoxy resin mixed with dark paint.   Once semi dry I sprinkled in some grit.   Then just gave a wash of Citadel Nuln Oil  and a  bit of grass.    I'm  pretty happy with the result and made things a lot easier.

Yeah thanks  FB.    That's the benefit of being a compulsive miniature kit buyer :).    I have literally hundreds of guys and thousands of left over bits kicking around.   I hardly ever make a unit straight up as intended by a single manufacturer.

I see V&V miniatures have some nice looking Carthaginian Officers out.  Pity the cost of figures and postage is way above industry standard or I'd jump to add them to my army.

made from body of Victrix unarmoured greek,  libyan head  from Victrix Warriors of Carthage set,  horse is Aventine.  As the legs of the Victrix guy would be too splayed for the slim Aventine horse I put the body in boiling water and molded the legs in a bit.   The spear quiver if custom made.   I custom made the sheep skin wrap too from greenstuff.

Roman Alae  -- Victrix.   I went for the battle weary look w some sword slashes in shields, dust on lower parts and a smattering of dried blood.

I'll do a block of 4  more with the more dynamic  Agema plastic figures next.

Thanks PM.  The bronze if  quite easy. I base c  Vallejo Tinny Tin,  light dry brush over w  Vallejo Gold and then some Army painter  Quickwash -  purple, dark or even the flesh wash all work well.

Thanks for the information about how you do bronze, using a purple wash never would have occurred to me (but in retrospect it makes sense that purple would make suitable shadows when applied over an essentially yellow metallic paint).

I thought Hannibal rode an Elephant?

I do love that Wargames Atlantic Chariot kit.  I used some for my Persians.  Technically, I have heard that Carthaginian Chariots were 4 horse, and some sources seem to think that the Carthaginians adopted the chariot from their Afro-Libyan clients.  I wish the Wargame Atlantic chariots could easily be upgraded to 4-horse versions.

Great looking set of miniatures you got here!
