Title: Re: Vietnam
Post by: Russ justice on January 02, 2021, 04:12:54 PM
Thanks guys its much appreciated,  they are a joy to paint  :)

mjkerner
The base colour is vallejo US dark green washed with army painter dark tone. One dry reinstate the US dark green,  high light with Russian uniform green ww2 from vallejo. Then its just a case of painting in the black stripes and careful  high lighting with dark grey. Then a steady hand and small brush using pastol green from vallejo to add the lighter coloured stripes. Hope that helps

Thanks again for the comments and feedback guys 😊

I received my latest recruits on Friday and I'm pretty pleased to say my SEAL team is finished.

Mail order was quick, efficient and correct, everything you could want from a company, they even managed to dispatch my second order with my first despite at least 24 hours time difference.

I've finished up my Empress Miniatures Australian infantry conversions,  my greenstuff skills are not the best so thankfully these needed the bare minium of sculpting to convert them into US Special Forces for my Vietnam collection.

I'm happy with the end result, they might not be perfect but I'm happy with the end result

Thanks Ash its much appreciated, using the figures with the M16s just seemed to beg to be converted.
Your conversions are pretty spot on my friend , my 2nd squad of recon marines are just waiting for me paint them in ERDL rather then the tiger stripe I went for in the first place when they first came out.

Going to have a go at converting a couple of the NVA figures into Montagnards to finish up my second SOG team.
Just trying to work out how to make extra US water bottles...

Its been a long day already I'm sure i replied to this already! But for the water bottles have a look at the NAM stowage set. I'm not sure how many are in it but it may help. There are also the plastic US WW2 infantry from Warlord Games, they have separate water bottles in the kit. It might be worth seeing if any one as any spare they could let you have. They may be a tad bigger but I reckon they would still work.

thank you, the film is a great watch, and yes the DShK is absolutely animal of a gun.
Those guys look superb, great colour choices.
thanks Ash, I enjoy the variety in uniforms. I've always try not to stick to closely to ranks of uniforms looking the same.
outstanding painting!
tomrommel1 thank you its very much appreciated
Any chance you could share what colours were used, as these look so good they deserve to be emulated?
Hang Tuah thank you, the green for the uniforms is reflective green from Vallejo. Mixed with a yellow green to highlight. Although I do mix different colours in to add that bit more variety, the light brown uniforms are basecoated khaki mixed with a lighter colour but not white. Off whites are the way to go, hope that helps.

Thanks guys for the feedback, hopefully I will get a few more finished soon .

The contrast between the uniform and the helmet is very successful.
What green color do you use for this US uniform?

tomrommel thank you your collection is a true inspiration
The contrast between the uniform and the helmet is very successful.
What green color do you use for this US uniform?
The base colour is vallejo US dark green, I mix in Russian uniform green to highlight. It also works mixing in other colours as long as it isn't enough to alter the base colour, khaki works well if you want the uniform to look a bit more washed out and faded. The helmet base colour I mixed a batch ages ago and I can't quite remember the exact colours used I know vallejo intermediate green was one but I can't quite remember what the other one was, try mixing in uniform green from vallejo. Hope that helps if not just give us a shout and I will try and help best I can.

Thanks guys, I'm enjoying painting these guys. They are stunning little figures, I really can't see my obsession with these guys ending any time soon. I'm looking at the M113's I've got and crewing them up for my ARVN forces. So I'm guessing that's going to be my next additions, but knowing my butterfly mind anything is possible.

I've still a few more to paint but I'm hoping it gives me enough civilians to add abit of character to my collection. As always more info and photos on my blog

Nice work on those civvies.

Apologies if you’ve mentioned it elsewhere, but are they from Empress?

Yes they are Empress Miniatures, I can't say I've seen anyone else who makes both armed and unarmed versions of the same figures.

Very nice.

Thank you, I just need to try and get some better photos of my full collection.

Very nice indeed. :-*

Just as a note, if you are doing more peasant civvies then steer away from white. White is the traditional colour of mourning in Vietnam.  That's not to say it's not worn, it most certainly is, many female school uniforms feature white ao dais and today most things go but 50+ years ago it would be uncommon in traditional peasant pyjamas,  the ao ba ba. Rural folk being more conservative and superstitious as a rule.

Thanks for that, Carlos.  I'll keep that in mind when my Empress civilians make their way to the head of my painting line...

It's took awhile but I've finally managed to add some additions to my collection, I seem to have struggled to back into things but here goes, most of my collection are on single figure bases for my infantry but I decided to add a few bases with a bit more character and multiple figures. I'm hoping it worked, I ha e updated my bag with a bit more info and photos. Please feel free to rake a look.

If all goes well I should be adding some more stuff real soon.

They look great, particularly like the group of three behind the fallen tree.

Thanks guys, I wanted the appearance of taking cover/getting ready for a firefight. The poses of the figures certainly lend themselves to it nicely.
