Title: Artificial Moss Mat as Gaming Mat?
Post by: metalface13 on 26 January 2021, 06:13:01 PM
Has anyone tried using an artifical moss mat such as this one as a gaming mat?

Yes, there was an extensive discussion on their pros and cons on here a while ago, you can find it here:

Yes, i have purchased a square for a Rohan board. I think it looks quite good but it sheds a bit. I’ve seen treatments how to prevent this an also how to add nuance.

I bought a piece that measured 1m by 1m to cut up for swamp pieces. It does shed but suits the purpose.

A can of hairspray does the trick for sealing most of the flock on the mats.

They're good quality, but in smaller scales with smaller bases (say 15mm bases), the flock is bumpy enough to make it difficult to keep all your figures upright. I'm considering cutting mine up for use as scatter terrain as a result.

The edges also tend to fray.

Any ideas on ways to help prevent that?

You can tape the underside, as a reinforcement.  Or possibly glue the edges. The matt is some kind of loose synthetic felt.
