Title: Wild Geese (movie) - Africa
Post by: pws on 01 February 2021, 09:02:06 AM
A return to the modern theme, I wanted a project suitable for the period of the film (one of my absolute favorites) so I chose miniatures for the end of the 70s.
Same thing for the "Africans", the Simbas are inspired by the film rather then real ones, the others are rather generic too so to be used even for clashes between local factions.

If I start writing the usual list of miniature producers I will bory you all beacause it's too long, mainly MoFos for the "wild geese" together wth some conversions.
My favorite is Pieter Coetzee/Hardy Kruger with the crossbow, modified by an IIGM Artizan para.

Nice! It is a classic, isn't it?

My favourite was always Jesse Blake. They even made an Action Man toy that was a rip-off of the character. I always wanted a 'Tom Stone' but I never had one. :)

Great film. The bit where R.S.M. Sandy Young yells out "Allen!" would bring a tear to a glass eye.

“God be with ye, yer murdering ‘eathans!”

Nearest I could get to Frank Finlay's god-botherer!

The Behind the Bastards podcast put out an episode a few months back on the guys involved in the real scenario the film was based on. Its interesting hearing about what was actually going on with them, as opposed to the Hollywood glamour. ...Ah, for how often the scenario seems to be played at Wargaming shows here. :D

He's there too, in the FAL+SMG picture. He's a must have character  lol

3d and (not) last part of this project. This time: Vehicles!
Some range rovers and some other suitable for a "wild geese" and/or african post-colonial scenario.
Ciao

May I suggest The Mongrel Miniatures Congo mercenaries?  They are available from Badger Games here in the states.

Great project, by the way!

Did the same, only I bought 'em! My regret is, it was years ago, and they're still not painted!

Impressive project - like your blog too - your Medieval minis are for instance very impressive.

If you pm me with swoppsies, I'll certainly have a think about it. If I keep the figures, the airport terminal and control tower any good to you?

Just read the book again.
In that they were all armed with Soviet equipment, each ten man section had two RPD LMGs, an RPG2, and everyone else an AK47.
Wearing Brit DPM and sporting US helmets. Didn't go into detail on the webbing.

Interesting, I'll have to read it again, I'd forgotten what a good book it is. Strangely enough I watched it again last night, I should imagine they went with FALs, SLRs etc because they'd be easiest to get hold of from the South African army.
